Been bartending for 15 years so 50% is the norm. 100% if I know you, you frequent my place of business and take care of me. Bad service, I still tip 20%. Believe me people, we all have bad days so there is no sense in screwing your server over just because things aren't perfect. I always give people the benefit of the doubt.
By the way, bottom line is women who are not in the service industry are the worst tippers!! I try not to stereotype in the service industry, but its almost impossible.

Not to sound too racist, but I can tell you've never waited tables in a restaurant in the South. As an example, the Chief of Police in Chapel Hill, NC used to come in to my restaurant 3 or 4 days a week for lunch. His usual maneuver was to leave the change on the table. And when I say change, I mean it in the strictest sense, metal only. I will agree that old ladies can be bad tippers though, but they are not the worst.

Spent a few years in the industry. I really enjoyed the job, but it had pretty tough times.
I have found myself tipping less over the years, for some reason. Table service, my standard rate is 20% on the closest $5 increment up. $23 bill = $5 tip.
But I feel like there is a shift going on with my tipping. I feel like 15% is in my future, for some reason, unless I know the person or I'm a regular.
I do reward exemplary service generously above the norms, but there has to be some extra in it for me to happen. Strong drinks, etc.
Nothing irritates me much more than a server that stays at your table too long.

I take a lot of things into consideration. In general, GF and I tip 20-25%. But, we tend to hit the same couple spots on a very regular basis, and know the staff quite well. They treat us very well for the most part, but a couple of the girls are just plain, fucking stupid.
Alaways screw something up on the order. (Got wedges instead of fries. Asked for BBQ sauce, got ranch.) Things that are simply caused by not paying attention. And as I said: There is one gal at each of our favorite haunts that CONSTANTLY do these things. To the point of us hoping we don't get them!
Well, if we get stuck with either of these stumble bums, we just tip 15%.
Also, if it's a busy night, we are not the people who grumble, "where the hell is she", because the waitress isn't making around as often as we might like for a wter refill. We get that. But, when you can't economize a little bit during the rest of the time, and maybe grab that empty soda glass for a refill on you way to check on table 5......there is a problem.
The biggest problem with a lot of wait staff today, IMO, is that they EXPECT +20% no matter what! They don't think they have to work for it. And when I see posts in here that pretty much show that's how it is.........you get what you get sometimes.

If they are exceptional I might tip as much as 50% or more, depends how much I drank. lol
If they suck, probably nothing. depends on why they suck though. if it's the kitchens fault, i still tip the average, if it's because they just don't give a shit, then it's nothing and I will make them aware of it.

Honestly, I don't follow a specific percentage in giving out tips. I would depend on the excellence of the service they provided us. Sometimes, I don't give out tips especially if they did not perform well in his job. But if one deserves a tip, I don't hesitate in giving them the amount they deserve. If you're satisfied with their service, give them the amount you think they should get. I would advise you, though, to give it to them personally and through cash. It used to be that everyone paid with cash, or possibly a check, for everything, everywhere. However, we now live in the credit and debit card era and are heading for mobile payments, but one should constantly try to tip waiters with cash wherever possible. I tip fairly well, bartenders get more of a percentage, but if I get a $10 breakfast I always tip a $5, I'm not going to ask to break a $5. That waitress is doing just as much work with my breakfast as someone would do with my dinner. A good tip can make someone's day. My standard is 20% and is adjusted up or down for either exceptional service or shitty service.
I'm a regular at BWW on Sundays during FB season and it's usually around 50% because they really take good care of me making sure I have the same TV for Ravens games and deliver great service. My beer is at my seat before I sit down and I get a refill without asking and never have to wait.

I am in this exact realm when it comes to tipping. Having a regular spot that you frequent is important. Tip well.....get treated well. The drinks are quick, the service is perfect, and you never leave feeling you got crap service. To me....that's worth a few extra bucks.
Being English, I know we have a terrible reputation for tipping here in the US.
My wife was a waitress in NYC during her college days and she says the English were always the worst tippers. She tells a funny story of this big group of English tourists leaving a really small tip so she "amended" their credit card slip to add an extra few bucks!!!
I can't really defend the English for this. Their is no tradition of tipping in England, but this is really no excuse. I'm pathetically soft. I always tip at least 20-25%, even if service is shitty. This is because, as someone said in this thread earlier, I don't know if they are having a bad day for some reason, problems at home, depressed, unwell, who knows? I'm so soft my wife has actually complained to me that I'm leaving too much! Unless we are in a very expensive restaurant I always leave cash for a tip.
I think the other reason I always try to be generous is that I have spent so much gambling/playing poker in my life I just feel plain mean if I'm cheap.
Someone mentioned earlier that they tip more to hot waitresses. I never do this. I'm much more likely to tip bigger to an older lady who looks like she is struggling a bit to hold it all together.
As I mentioned, I'm pathetically soft. Ask my six-year old twin girls.
