20% good or bad. If it's that bad, I just don't return to the restaurant, and let my friends know. Usually it's not the server's fault that the food sucked. And if it's the server's fault, oh well, they beat me for the tip.

Really good service, maybe 25%, but that all depends I suppose...

You know who are the worst tippers in the whole wide world? Old, white women.

Elderly lady: $52.50? That's a little high, I'll just tip a dollar.

My daughter tells me that all the time, and also women in general tip less than men:0008

20 percent. If the service is bad maybe less but in reality it has to be pretty bad. Like the waitress who brought me cold food after waiting and waiting and told me the kitchen was backed up. But other than something like that 20 percent.

My son is a waiter in a restaurant in Manhattan ( does very well ) but he says Europeans tip a lot less . He waited on Willie Nelson the tab was about $ 150 & he left him a $50 tip , no wonder Willie is in financial trouble. Also I asked if he payed in cash or credit card, he said cash

I've been a waiter and my wife's father owned two restaurants in Lubbock while she was growing, she also worked in them. We base our tip on quality of service(the things the waiter can't control don't come into play ie bad food) but also a big thing I base my tip on is the amount of time they wait on us. If we go in with the kids, sit down and order drinks and food right away, then eat and are out pretty quickly without asking for much help then usually I'm around 17-18%. If we order multiple drinks, need extra stuff and just sit around talking then I tip more. Personally as a waiter I would rather the 17% and someone be in and out very quickly than someone who takes a lot of work and tips 20%.

Depends if my waitress is hot, if so maybe 25% or more. Almost always 20%, if bad service slightly less and just dont go back.

you get 15% and like it..

I ain't your daddy and I didn't take ya to raise..

$1,000.00 in tickets.

15% ya make $150.00

ya work the supper shift..

5 till 1 am including cleanup and cashout..

8 hrs ..ya make 18.70 a hour..

ya give Uncle Sam some and ya still making more per hour than 90% of the ball busting sweat pouring out workers in this country.

HAVE A NICE DAY..

and thanks for the tea refill on your way by the table..

Not that I'm taking up for Europeans, but everywhere I went out to eat in Europe had the tip already included in the bill. Ignorance is no excuse I know.

I hate it when it's like that too, because then the wait staff has to claim that on their taxes...

Also, that's why if I pay the bill with a credit card, I always leave the tip in cash. Uncle Sugar can keep his dirty dick beaters out of the little guys pocket that way.

I tip bartenders better than waiters. Waiters banter usually feels condescending and unnecessary. ANd they just deliver the food. Bartenders actually craft the drink and are people you can confide your deepest darkest secrets to. :0008

My one question is, when did acceptable tipping go from 15% to 20%? I am not old, and I was always taught 15% base and extra for good service. Is 20% the vocal minority, or am I just way off?

I will admit that I probably am one of those people who thinks he is tipping really well, but upon reflection I am at best an average tipper.

This thread is giving me a complex. :scared :scared

I'll be honest, it's just easier to figure 20% on the fly and give an approximate amount from there.

That's my excuse anyway. I still think the expected norm is 12%-15%.
