On the course!
I bought a tv this morning with 1080/120 specs.

When I have it on, it shows it is only in 720/60

I'm not seeing much on the web to help me.

Think you're only gonna get 1080 from BluRay. HD programming is 720. Someone should confirm though... I may be pulling this outta my arse. Congrats on the new tube!

You can't really tell the difference anyway.

I had the same problem as well when I first got HD but those channels are way up in the high numbers. That's how it is here anyway. ESPN regular is channel 24 and then there's ESPN channel 4598 in HD. For example.

Thanks for the input, fellas. I'm finding that programs are only put out in 720. 1080 is pretty much for movies and games, I guess.

Live and learn.

Now, if I can just sync the remote......

if you don`t mind saying, what brand and size flat panel did you spring for,z?........

anything under a 40"(i`m told) is irrelevant as far as 720/1080......i can`t tell the difference,myself....some can...

i have a cheap($169) 24" lg 720 p that doubles as a comp. monitor that has the best picture in the house...

50" Insignia LCD from Bestbuy.

It's my first flat screen. I'm not a techie, and wouldn't have this yet, if it wasn't for the fact that the old tube TV was going bad.

I really love the picture when the station is a 5.1 feed. I just assumed EVERYTHING would look great! Not the case.

At least most sports is 5.1

last question....you using cable,direct tv/dish or antenna?....

getting an hdmi cable could be crucial to the kind of picture you get...you can get one at walmart/target/best buy/radio shack....pretty much any place(and the prices are all over the place, don`t break the bank for a cable)....i`m sure you have more than one hdmi jack on a 50" tv,so if you`re using a dvd player/blu ray or home theater with it,you`ll want one for each...

if you sprung for a 50" tv,you have to get the hdmi cables(particularly with a cable or satellite/dish hook-up....makes all the difference)...

Cable company tossed in the HDMI cable when I picked up the box (I thought it was pretty nice of them, until I remembered what I pay a month!)

Like I said. Very pleased with most channels now. Just some clunkers in there, and if I watch "regular" channels, it's a crap shoot with picture size, and quality.

LOL yeah but they do not put out the cables

the flatscreens have some nice gold parts inside and very high grade mother boards steel chasis weighs 50 - 85 lbs so it's decent money at 12 cents a lb

your non-hi-def stations should give you a 4:3 aspect ratio(a smaller box within the full scope of the picture screen)...it`s smaller, but,it`s a "true" image of what`s being broadcast(just not with the clarity of hi def)...some t.v.`s try and pull or artificially extend a non-hi def picture but it ends up looking distorted...you`re better off setting the tv to a "set by program"(could be phrased another way depending on the manufacturer`s terminology) setting which automatically adjusts the picture based on the content you`re viewing....it`ll show high def in a true 16:9 ratio(full screen without distortion)......

and make sure you have the "input" set to the correct hdmi input you`re using...sometimes it comes defaulted as the "t.v." input which will give you a less precise picture.....

i`m sure you are aware of most of this stuff...just mentioning it in case you aren`t(i made some stupid f`ing mistakes when i got my first hi def t.v. so i`ve been there)....you might as well get the biggest bang for your buck....

g.l....

It -should- be letting you watch in 1080.

If you got a new hd box from the cable company - make sure you are on the HD version of the channel.
There should be a way to go into your channel guide on the cable box and hide the Standard def channels and only show the HD channels.

You might need to play with the input settings on the tv itself as well and adjust how the screen is displayed.

best route -
chuck the cable box and sign up with directv.

Eric: I had the same issue. Check the settings for your cable box. I fucked around with my TV forever before finding the solution was in my cable settings, not the TV.
