Indy had 3 diff $5,000 ded plans--I ran their most expensive one and had to rate you on modified factor 0.917 (way down list) to get near that premium.
Your health warrents much better rating--so assume they are calculating yours on claim experience (drug cost).

Prepared on: 5/1/2008 Effective Date: 5/1/2008
Indiana Individual Quote
Monthly Payment Option
Bartholomew County
Medical Product Blue Traditional--Plan 1
Medical Deductible $5,000
Maternity No
Medical Rate $743.81
Calculated Risk Factor 0.917
(Calculated Risk Factor may vary by deductible options)

Jack:

Look at different carriers - not just the Blues. There are many fine individual carriers out there - and the competitiveness changes a lot from state to state, even zip code to zip code.

You should also look at a $5K deductible HSA plan - it will likely be your best value.

Jack:

Go to www.ehealth.com

It is a leading individual health website. I found a lot of plans under $500 a month for a 53 year old male smoker and a 48 female nonsmoker.

You must be careful though - some of the plans have inside limits and exclusions - I could help you with any questions you may have.

This will give you the chance to see about 100 different plans - differing benefits and pricepoints.

mags, i've done all that and have shown the plans to my agent but when gets finished with the same exact plan the price is a lot higher than quoted from that site. she says something about underwriters and blah, blah, blah and i get a higher quote. she says that's what it is. i don't think she's ripping me off, i think she's going by what the computer tells her and she's probably using more info about me than that site is asking me to provide them with.

Jack:

She is being straight with you. The rates quoted are standard rates. Due to your health history (I would assume), insurers are placing a rateup (usually a % - like 25%) on the standard premium.

Not all insurers underwrite the same way - what could be a 25% rateup at one carrier may not be a rate up at all carriers.

Typically though - the higher deductible you apply for, the lower the rating you may receive. This is because for some conditions, they may not concern the carrier as much if you have a $5,000 deductible versus a $500 deductible.

Good Luck!

Why does state to state matter so much for health insurance?

All industries based on secrets are going down in flames!

Used cars
Life insurance
Real estate agents

The really good ones will continue to provide value to clients and the rest will be forced to find other people to steal from.

The consumer is just too powerful with available info from the internet.

Well, let's see....

Why do rates vary by state?

Companies many times will based rates based on the experience of the state - if they are doing well, states will be cheaper, if poorly, then prices are higher

Different states have different benefits that are mandated in each policy, which results in added costs.

PPO Discounts (the amounts hospitals and doctors discount their services) vary widely from state to state - even city to city. When comparies get better discounts, they can offer better prices to customers.

Hospital and Doctor costs also vary from region to region (before discounts are even applied).

There are more reasons, but I'm guessing most folks are bored already.

It's funny - everyone calls the insurance industry "crooks" - but I think this is due to a lack of understanding by the consumer. In reality, most individual insurance companies have profit margins that range from 4% to 10% at most.

Compare that to furniture (over 100% markup), clothes (well over 100% markup), and insurance is a deal.

It's just that it is so expensive, so people automatically think it is unjust. Due to state regulation, most insurance carriers are limited in what they can charge. Effectively, they take the total claims, expenses to administer the claims/policies, commissions paid to agents and then add a 4-10% profit margin.

That doesn't seem like an unfair return on investment to me...
