Bill Frist medical school experiments controversy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
While he was a medical school student, Bill Frist (now a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee and Senate Majority Leader) performed medical experiments on shelter cats while researching the use of drugs on the mitral valve. By his own account, Frist improperly obtained these cats from Boston animal shelters, falsely telling shelter staff he was adopting the cats as pets. In his 1989 book Transplant, Frist admitted that he killed these cats during medical experiments at Harvard Medical School, as part of what he claimed were his studies.[1]

In his book, Frist explained that he succumbed to the pressure to succeed in a highly competitive medical school. Frist stated that he "treat[ed] them as pets for a few days" before he "cart[ed] them off to the lab to die." He went on to say, "And I was totally schizoid about the entire matter. By day, I was little Billy Frist, the boy who lived on Bowling Avenue in Nashville and had decided to become a doctor because of his gentle father and a dog named Scratchy. By night, I was Dr. William Harrison Frist, future cardiothoracic surgeon, who was not going to let a few sentiments about cute, furry little creatures stand in the way of his career. In short, I was going a little crazy." He went on to describe why he conducted animal experiments: "It can even be beautiful and thrilling work, as I discovered that day in the lab when I first saw the wonderful workings of a dog's heart . . . I spent days and nights on end in the lab, taking the hearts out of cats, dissecting each heart, suspending a strip of tiny muscle that attaches the mitral valve to the inner wall of the cat heart and recording the effects of various medicines I added to the bath surrounding the muscle." "I lost my supply of cats. I only had six weeks to complete my project before I resumed my clinical rotations. Desperate, obsessed with my work, I visited the various animal shelters in the Boston suburbs, collecting cats . . . it was a heinous and dishonest thing to do."

Senator Bill FristAlthough Frist's book had been published more than a decade before, the matter created public controversy after mention in a Boston Globe profile, published after his election as Senate majority leader. PETA, which opposes scientific experimentation on animals that results in death or cruel treatment demanded that Frist atone by sponsoring legislation to protect animals from unnecessary suffering. In response, Frist's office reaffirmed that he denounced the action, but made no promises about any animal protection legislation.

Some claim that Frist's actions violated a criminal statute prohibiting cruelty to animals.[2] Frist was never charged under this statute and his defenders have pointed out that until 1983 Massachusetts law permitted shelters to release animals for laboratory experiments, and some states continue to permit such activity today. Because the Boston area animal shelters in Frist's case did not release the animals to Frist knowing they would be used for experimentation because of his deception, these laws may not have applied to the facts presently in the public record about Frist's actions.

Jack i can't remember what it was but this prick had something put into the Patriot act so he couldn't be liable for something that was involved in his corrupt business pratices. People hear the word Patriot act and get all mad when you don't support it but its about word games with our gov't and not good bills for the country. Im also glad to see you use the word prick and asshole. I thought i might get banned for using those terms.

I watched the interview last night with the boddog owner last night on abc nightline. The tool doing the interview kept asking if he paid personal taxes in u.s. and he kept saying I only discuss corporate matters not personal. So he then says so u deny paying personal taxes? WTF? This shits a joke. Our gov is a ****n joke anymore. Iraq's a mess, people still homeless in new orleans, mississippi and alabama from katrina. your dollar goes less today than 10 years ago far less and they worry about internet gambling.

They want to control it just like the control lotteries so they can take funds and fleece themselves. Hell where did all the tobacco settlement money go? Did any of the actual tobacco users get any of this $$$. I am beginning to wonder if the American way of life is the best.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
what some guys do for pussy!

Trent Lott's book "Herding Cats- A Life In Politics" (perhaps chose that title to remind folks of Frist's past), Lott sez Frist went behind his back without giving him even a courtesy call to manipulate the vote to kick Lott out of majority leader post. Lott considers it a "personal betrayal."

Jack I think the catch 22 on this issue these idiots are clueless to the fact of how many of their voters are against it.Have yet to see any petitions are large groups publicly opposing and more than likely out of fear state and fed scrutiny into their affairs.
Where are all these people rights orgs--Surely to ok state lottery and ax sport betting is an obvious contradiction.
Maybe we get out of this with compromise of just disallowing credits card transfers.

Gentlemen:

Strange bedfellows indeed. As I have been spouting for years, Frist and many of his cohorts on the right are slowly, subtly, diminishing the personal freedoms of Americans. They have been doing this for years and have conveniently used 9-11 and terrorism as the rational. These men use the words "terrorism", and concepts such as "money laundering" to strike fear into the generally dumb publics imagination that we better get rid of internet gambling since its funding terrorism although it has nothing to do with it. In addition they play on Bible belt anti-gambling sentiments to get their way.

As many of you know, I do not gamble. So I do not have any type of ulterior motive or vested interest in this debate in this as Wayne would have you believe. Since this is hitting close to home for many of you who do gamble, Frists actions may finnally drive home the points I've been spouting out of my "liberal" mouth around here for years.

UNDER THE GUISE OF GOD, COUNTRY, AMERICA, FREEDOM, ANTI-TERRORISM and FEAR, FEAR, FEAR, the republicans have taking control of this country from the average Joe and giving to the government and big business. You have to have insurance to drive a car. You have to pay a private company to drive a car. Is that fair???

Govenment can listen to your calls. Check your bank accounts. Slow, subtle. When where does it stop. No check. No balance.

We are losing the country our forefathers took from the government of England and gave to the people to a government currently owned by corporations.

Think about that last sentence. Campaign finance reform is the only answer.

The gambling bill is one of many inroads. Some of you now feel my pain. Only I've been feeling it in many different areas over a broader spectrum for many years.

Thousands of lives lost in Iraq and who many money. Think about it.

Sorry for the hijack, Jack. But the imposition of laws based upon there moral judments as to appropriate behaviour by these pricks governing your private choices is as appalling to me as it is to you. Expand it beyond gambling and you will see what I deal with on a daily basis.

I loathe them and there holier than thou attitudes especially in contrast to the moral depravity of the murderous conduct in Iraq.

Controversy over medical school experiments

Main article: Bill Frist medical school experiments controversy

While in medical school, Frist obtained cats from animal shelters, under pretense of adoption as pets, for school research experiments in which he killed the animals. In a 1989 autobiography, Frist described how he "spent days and nights on end in the lab, taking the hearts out of cats, dissecting each heart." After some time, Frist said " lost my supply of cats," so he chose to deceive animal shelters, an act which he described as "heinous and dishonest." He attributed his behavior to the pressures of school. The incident sparked controversy after a 2002 Boston Globe story repeated the account. If Frist runs for and is eventually elected President of the United States he will become the first known cat killer to hold that office.

French now taking same road----

Bwin Co-Heads Held in France on Gaming-Law Charges (Update1)

By Matthias Wabl

Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG, an Austrian online gaming company, said co-Chief Executive Officers Manfred Bodner and Norbert Teufelberger were detained by French authorities and accused of violating local betting laws.

The company's shares were suspended in Vienna, and shares of competitors including PartyGaming Plc slid across Europe. Separately, Bavaria banned Bwin from taking wagers on sports, the third German state to do so.

``The two biggest European markets, Germany and France, have moved from a passive attitude on online gaming to a hostile, active attitude,'' said Michael Schatzschneider, a Frankfurt- based analyst at Commerzbank AG.

Bwin is the third Web gambling company to have an executive detained while traveling outside their home country in the past three months. Peter Dicks, the former chairman of London-based Sportingbet Plc, was arrested in New York last week on charges of illegal computer gambling. David Carruthers, former head of Betonsports Plc, was arrested in Texas in July and his company was barred from doing business in the U.S.

Bodner and Teufelberger will be questioned tomorrow, and a hearing has been scheduled in Nice, France, said Karin Klein, a spokeswoman for Bwin. The two were detained while unveiling an agreement with AS Monaco, a team in France's soccer league. Klein said the company expects the chief executives to be released tomorrow at the latest.

Bavaria Ban

PartyGaming, the world's largest publicly traded online gaming company, fell 8.25 pence, or 7.5 percent, to 102 pence at 3 p.m. in London. 888 Holdings Plc, the world's largest online casino, dropped 10.25 pence, or 6.8 percent, to 143.75 pence.

Bavaria, whose biggest city is Munich, joins Saxony and Hesse states in barring Bwin from doing business in Germany.

``Sports bets are illegal in Bavaria if they're not organized by the Bavarian State Lottery Administration,'' said the government of the Bavarian region of Central Franconia in a faxed statement today.

WTF? Is it not a factual statement that Frist would become the first cat killer President? I'm sure PETA will not be endorsing his run.
