Going to hoover dam while in vegas and was wondering if anyone has been on the tour. Cost of ticket is a none issue, but I have read it is like a two hour :scared thing. Is it a guided drawn out thing or is it a move at your own pace type of thing. Someone that has been on it give me the low-down.

rented a car, drove down there, got out of the car in 116 degree heat, got back in and left.

Drove from Vegas to the Dam.Didn`t see that much to see. Little gift shop at top of Dam and

Go to the dam and drive back right away. Then go take the tour at Seamless, Olympic Gardens or Sapphires instead.

UGA: I really like going to the dam, but never have taken the tour. Just drive up and check it out. I can see how some people might think it is lame, but I think it is a pretty cool experience.
I've never done this tour. Somewhat considered it the few times when I went out to LV with an intrepid girlfriend(4-gf trips/35 not so much) or another that kinda wanted to. What's amazing is how they built this thing back in, what, the 40's? This was FDR's thing, right?
And how many people got killed and hurt building it? A lot, I think I remember from TV stuff.
Whatever the case, a 2 hour 'tour' would test my patience, but going up there for a bit would be pretty interesting.
I want to say the tour itself at the site was like 1.5hrs with some time spent in the Souvenier store. We rode a bus from the hotel. I enjoyed it.

take you down a elevator into the cool pit of the damn. Its a guided tour and you have to stay with the group of about 20 people. If you hang in the back you can hardly hear the old guy. If its the same guy you will probably need to hold his hand while you walk to hear him. He had been doing the tour for 44 years so he wasnt very enthusiastic.
Kinda boring but alot of good facts about how the dam was built and how many people died and how much concrete.

They had helicoptor rides around the damn .
It was definately worth it. The pilot came over this mountain like and then dropped like over a cliff. that will get the stomach churning. I remember leaning over and saying to him if he did that again I was going to throw him out.

Not to sure on the time but it wasn't 2 hrs they took us down to the bottom of the damn & we got to see the turbines.
If you are into engineering I say go for it.

My dad and step-mom went last year and wouldn't shut up about it.
I think it would be amazing to see.

UGA if you take the dam tour please take a lot of dam pictures and if you have a lot of dam questions make sure you get the dam questions answered by the dam tour guide.
I didn't take the tour but back in 1997 my girlfriend and I drove from Tuscon to Vegas over the course of 2 days and stopped at the dam on the way to Vegas. I thought it was awesome. I'd be curious to see how Lake Mead looks as that region is in terrible drought. I say at least go and see it.

I took it several years back. It was fucking Africa hot out there! I have no idea how men worked in that heat, and then lived out there. All that for a dollar a day?
It was my last Vegas trip in July....I can tell you that much. Vegas is about 105, and the dam area is a good 15 degrees "warmer"!
But, inside the dam, it is nice and cool! I enjoyed it very much.

my wife-son and i did the raft trip that starts at the dam itself and loved it--didnt actually do the tour tho
