My wife makes a lot of cakes for people she knows, gets referrals, etc. Just a hobby kind of thing.

We have a huge disagreement about how much she should charge for these things.

Most recently she made this cake for a baby shower. How much should she have charged?

I have to show the unfinished pic so you can see what it is. The finished cake has a blanket on it's ass. The whole thing is edible.

Saw a lady on Shark Tank who makes cakes and charges $44.50...maybe use that as a point of reference?

I know nothing about cakes expect at my small business when it is an employees birthday they get a cake of their choice made by a local bakery. I see the bills come through and they are usually in the $40 range, but they are just normal cakes. These baby cakes ur wife is making are WAY more elaberate and time consuming to make. So I would so closer to the $200 range:shrug:

After seeing william13 post, I was assuming you could eat the baby part:mj07: If it is just a decrotive piece then $100 range.

Very impressive. That looks like $50 plus to me, especially in my area. How about putting together some kind of formula. Cost of materials, plus how much time it takes, then at least triple it?

I would be having the disagreement with you 2 guys too. I don't know what the materials cost but she probably has 8 hours in that thing.

That's the range I am thinking.

Jack need to chime in here...Seen many fondant cakes in my area know 2 different bakers. That cake should be $100-$125 from what I have seen.

I have researched too and those people are selling at a very reasonable price, most places charge a lot more.

Yeah, you can eat the whole thing.

The last cake like this she charged $50 and I convinced her to up the price and she sold this one for $100 but I'm thinking upper 100's.

She make a lot of cheesecakes for people and only charges $20 but that's what the ingredients cost her.

Since my wife also bakes cakes, I showed her the picture of the cake & she was very impressed....She even said "WOW"!!....LOL

Suzanne told me that because there was a lot of detail that went into making the cake she thought that $60 was the minimum that should be charged....I think she should charge at least $100 for it....& I think people would pay it....

She's obviously professionally trained, right? Work on a formula, time, materials and profit. But if she spent 8 hours on the baby cake it should be well over $100, probably closer to $200.

ps......it has the WOW factor, people pay for that.

For the cheesecakes, Id say at a minimum the cost of ingredients x2. $20 to make it, charge $40.

For the talented decorative cakes like the baby one above $150 and up, depending on size and time to create.

There is a happy medium between working on what you love for free (cost) and making a modest amount (not to live on)

My parents were in the bakery business their whole lives. They owned their own 5-6 at the most (just one at the end) for over 30 years...

Around here that is a $100+ easily. I'm sure in larger cities its easily $200.

that`s some serious stuff she made their,bud.....you guys should try and figure a way to advertise her business(any local free papers around...or make up some cards and post them at local business bulletin boards)...wo...she can pick and choose what she wants to do....i`m betting she could garner some business clientele if she chose to expand a little....

I asked my wife what she would expect to pay for the baby shower cakes.....she said $250.

That is a specialty cake and I would think $150 minimum.
