After last week's Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon v FEC striking down total limits on campaign donations, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that even more deregulation is necessary to "overnight, equalize the middle class and the rich."
Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Gingrich cited the 1976 decision Buckley v. Valeo, which first equated with money with speech and said that to limit certain contributions was tantamount to limiting freedom of expression. Gingrich said that "you've gone from that original decision to Citizens United, which said, in effect, that corporations could give and created super PACs. Now you've said they're unlimited."
The 2010 Citizens United ruling allowed corporations, unions and individuals to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections through super PACs. Last week's McCutcheon decision lets individuals give an unlimited total amount directly to parties and candidates, so long as they stay within limits for individual campaigns.
Gingrich added, "The next step is the one Justice Clarence Thomas cited -- candidates should be allowed to take unlimited amounts of money from anybody. And you would, overnight, equalize the middle class and the rich."
The former speaker wan't the only panel member offering a counterintuitive take on Wednesday's decision. Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, argued that not every wealthy donor will embrace the outcome of the McCutcheon case, because they may now be obliged to give more.
"All the donors I know hate this decision, of course," he said. "This used to be a very good excuse to say to a candidate, ooh, I'm maxing out, I just can't help your campaign."

Do words mean anything to Newt? Under what possible twisting of the dictionary does allowing the rich to give as much as they want 'equalize' them with the middle class? Is it that under no limits the rich can give as much as they want and the middle class can give as much as they want?
The reality of American politics is that there are three elections. There is the general election, and before that there is a primary election to see who is on the general election ballot, and before that there is the 'money primary'. Moreover one can argue that the money primary is the most important because unless you do well there you will not be able to make a credible appearance on the others.
Since we can't really get rid of the 'money primary' how do we make sure that people besides the very wealthy actually have a vote in it?
My idea is that any group doing political advocacy in any form (lobbying, issue ads, political ads, community organizing, political consulting, whatever) no matter what structure (527, 501c3, 501c4, whatever) rather than being tax exempt pay an income tax of 50 percent on all donation income. But the money does not go to the federal government. Instead it is used to fund a book of vouchers given to every voter in the election. The vouchers can then be given to any organization participating in the special tax.
The bottom line is that the public gets a voice in the money primary. Unlike Newt's twisted rhetoric the public really does get equalized with they big money donors. The public cannot be shouted down by the mega-donors no matter how much they give because the voice of the public automatically scales up with the voice of the donors. In addition it is better than various public financing proposals because those proposals have no voice; the candidate gets the money but only has to pay attention to the donors. Under the voucher plan the candidate or cause actually has to care about resonating with the people to get the money.

The number of people not in the labor force which in March soared by a massive 663,000 to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer even looking for work. This was the biggest monthly increase in people dropping out of the labor force since January 2012, when the BLS did its census recast of the labor numbers. And even worse, the labor force participation rate plunged from an already abysmal 63.5% to 63.3% - the lowest since 1979! But at least it helped with the now painfully grotesque propaganda that the US unemployment rate is "improving."
Oh, yeah - the economy is improving. As you say, Duff- more people are employed...really? by who's count? and if so, do minimum wage, part time jobs replace the good paying skilled jobs that were lost? Hmmmmmm......here are some more of those crazy damn facts for you:

Instead Darden is planning to spin Red Lobster off into another company and sell some of its stores.

Safeway closed 72 Dominick?s grocery stores in the Chicago area last year.
