i don`t get it either,joker...and i`m the last person anyone would accuse of being an eco-nazi......

i` wouldn`t mind taking up target shooting with a compound bow.....but i couldn`t kill a deer(i have a safeway right down the street...i can get plenty of food there)...

maybe if civilization failed or we had a zombie appocalypse...

but, without an absolute necessity,i just couldn`t do it...it would bother me...

but, that`s me...not condemning those that do...

Really? You're the hunter and you don't know? Shouldn't a hunter be able to track a deer instead of placing a camera and checking it every so often to see if their are any around?

The camera is not to "see if there are any around". There are deer most anywhere, so no I have never heard of people putting out cameras to see if they are there. I and others do use cameras to check populations and determine maturity and ratio of herd though.
It is easy to shoot and kill a deer WITH a rifle. That's my point. I know it's not walk out in the woods and there's a bunch of deer.

Couldnt agree more, if a deer walks out within 100 yards, most people could take them. Getting the deer to be within 100 yards of you is the hard part. The more mature the deer, the more dificult that becomes. BTW I fully understand that there are rifles that can take deer from 500 yards, but that does not happen around here. You dont have many shots over 100 yards around this area.

Your quote
"to me and everyone else I hunt with, it is not about the kill, but about the camaraderie and work it takes to take a truly mature deer." I get it. I understand this. To take a mature deer using "technology" using cameras and feeders is fine. Just don't think you are a true outdoorsman and hunter. You using a scoped rifle is not not hunting either. That part is too easy. It's simple to aim and pull a trigger. Like I said a five year old can do it.

So when does it become hunting? Why are bows that are more accurate than guns used in the Civil War okay and scopes are not? Why are bows okay when people used spears before that? Are people that catch fish using lures real fishermen? I dont think natives used a depth finder or sonar did they? Should FDC be using a cane pole if he wanted to be a true fisherman? There are obviously many other examples, but the point is you have your feeling toward the sport(or lack there of) and that is not going to change. If your argument is that the use of technology means people are not Hunters, then that also carries over into every other aspect of life where technology has made things easier.

Bottom line is this - I do know that it is difficult to hunt a deer without feeders, cameras and scoped rifles. So that is my point - bows seem to be the only way to truly hunt (even then technology has made that easier).

Feeders I do not use and do not agree with, but again the camera thing is silly as there is no atvantage from a camera to taking a deer. We obviously have much different experiences and feelings about the subject , but if you are ever in the area, it wouldnt stop me from inviting you along.

I am speaking mostly of the co-worker who brought in his brag book. and he is a douche because he uses feeders, cameras and high-powered scoped rifles.

I have no respect for "hunters" unless they are trying to kill something that can actually kill them. And yes I root for the animal.

Where it is real F ing COLD
Well I am a bit wishy washy on the subject. Hunting season with a rifle is 2 weeks here and sometimes there are 3 day seasons before and a muzzle loader season in December pending the estimated deer heard. Rifle season start the week before Turkey day and lasts 2 weeks. Bow season starts the second or third weekend of Sept, is off during rifle hunt and ends Jan 1..

Now I am all for the killing of deer, there are many lying dead on the side of the road anyways. The populations can get out of control. My parents do not hunt and they feed deer in the winter. I counted 26 deer in their driveway and most years the number hovers around 20. I love venison and venison burger is awesome especially in chile. :0074 My buddy hunts I property and generally shoots 2 deer per year and we split most of it. I just want burger. I would not call what he does hunting though. We have a tree stand about 200 yards from my place with a nice clearing that sets him up for about a 30 - 40 yard shot. Yes we do bait em in for a bout 3 weeks before hand. Would it matter if he had a scope not so much for the kill but I like the fact that he has a scope.. The scope is very accurate and since I want the kill to be quick and painless. He shoots his deer right in the head, with a scope from that distance it is easy to do. Makes me feel better not that I should,, Is this hunting or does it take skill.. Nah..

Now if he were bow hunting from that same stand, then it would be hunting cause he has to get the deer to come in a little bit closer and Bucks of size just do not come in that close very often and you got to be damn lucky or very skillful cause once a Big Buck knows you are there or even gets a scent of you, he is gone... You can get little bucks who are on doe scent to come in but most bow hunters I know will not take a small buck with a bow. Bow hunting is for trophy bucks, rifle hunting is for table fare.

Bear hunting also needs to be done and they are my favorite wild animal. We only have black bears around here and I have had the same momma for about 10 years. She has a back leg limp so I know it is her and yes I feed her every year.. I know I am not suppose to but she has not done anything to my property or has been aggressive toward me or my pets. Bear Hunting is totally OFF LIMITSy on my property and luckily most of the property around me as relatives and friends own it. I know bears need to be thinned as the DNR grossly underestimated their population but they can be thinned somewhere else.

Bear hunting with dogs to me is disgusting, granted I do not know much about it but I can't stand it. Had people from Illinois with dogs on my property, I love dogs but I wanted to pop em with my rifle, asked the hunters to leave and they did. never been back but I was pist.. I just do not see it as being humane. Many hunters blame bears for dog kills.. I have read that it is mostly wolves that kill the dogs..

Now as for camera use, I am alright with that. To me cameras really do not give the hunter too much of an edge. I don't need a camera to know that animals are there and time. The camera would just let me know what it looks like.. How big is it but you can tell that from tracks, cameras are more of a wow factor type thing but I do not see much of a hunting advantage..
