So, I have had an issue with my furnace not being able to keep the house cool enough during the summer here in Indiana, no suprise it has been hot.

I talked to a couple people who thought maybe my freon was low in the unit outside.

Well I had the service guy over today, and he did some cleaning of the coil inside which he said was pretty dirty, and then he asked how often I change my filter. I said about 90 days, whcih is probably more like 120 days. Kind of like 3,000 miles for an oil change is how I treated it. He told me I should change it monthly.

My othe rproblem is my unit (Bryant) has a wierd size of filter that I can't find in stroe, so I have had to order off the net before. Just wanted some opinions on Air Filters if there is certain ones that do a better job.

My Filter size is:13 X 21 1/2 X1

iI also have an electronic Honeywell thermostat, my house is only 8 years old and is about 1700 sq ft, I would like to keep this place a little cooler, suggestions anyone?

you change the filters adequately.

in really hot weather (liike we are experiencing) many HVAC installations are not set up for worst case scenarios.

One ''ton" of air conditioning is designed to service between 600-900 square feet of house, (depending on local variables)

Do the math to see if your system is undersized or not

Often contractors max out units to barely cover the square footage of house.. :nono:

I have a friend who works on my AC units on the side. He's had to come out 3 times this summer. Fortunately, I have 2 different units, and 1 can cool the whole house if the other is down. I think changing the filters every month is bologna too.

My son had this problem with his house so he went with a less restrictive filter and it seemed to help some and allow more air flow, see below:

Many filters carry a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating, which indicates their effectiveness. The higher the MERV rating, the more effective. Most spun filters have a MERV rating of 4. Standard pleated filters average MERV 6. Electrostatic pleated versions start at MERV 8, with the highest quality ones hitting MERV 12.

Maybe try a 6.........12 will decrease air-flow.

Boys, thanks for the suggestion on the lower MERV value. I found the same type info on another board (www.hvac-talk.com - not real exciting over there).

I am currently ussing an 11, but will probably drop down to an 8 or 6 since I am going to be replacing them much more frequently. The house has stayed cool all day long now after the coil has been cleaned and filter changed.

BTW, if you have odd size filters, check out http://www.filters-now.com that is where I have to buy my size at.
