Buddy - when I was 11 and listening to this stuff at church it was credit cards, cashless society, and the number of the *Beast* indicating the looming apocolypse that they scared us with.
These fundamentalist churches need to keep their followers scared that the world is ending in a few years. They use every modern event as a way to prove it's happening. See, if the 2nd coming and judgement day were 50 years off, then people wouldn't be scared enough to keep giving them money and voting for their candidates. BUT when they strike fear that Revelation is indicating that it's happening now, then everyone is eager to give their savings (I mean who needs money when the world ends, right?) and get on the right team for the winning score.
