I keep 3 loaded handguns in my house at all times. Over the weekend I made sure they were clean and freshly loaded with hollow points. Be prepared is my motto.

Good job. Personal firearm maintenance is often ignored. What all do you have locked and loaded in your home?
Door crashes in or window breaks (it will be loud). Have your wife call 911. Open the drawer of your bedside table, and you have your firearm in less than 10 seconds. In your case, go to the noise bc you have a family to protect. Shoot the intruder or scare him off. Done. How can this be a bad thing? :shrug: I agree with The Boys on this. I never would welcome an intruder invasion, and I would be scared, but I know how to use a gun, and I own more than one as well.

Like yOu said , I have children. Obviously, I wouldn't keep a loaded gun in my nightstand or anywhere else not under lock and key. Secondly, I don't live in a studio apartment, so I guess if need to stash a gun in the kitchen, living room, dining, upstairs den, back porch (all this nice weather, we are out here all the time) and my office, right? That's about 7 gun safes with loaded weapons not counting bathrooms. Who am I, lumi?
Congrats! Your children are different than most if they adhere to all rules all the time. I grew up with guns in my house. 357 and 38. There was a gun cabinet and small safe, but my dad carried on his person, so every now and then, there'd be a gun on the dresser or in his dressing room. I was told never to touch the guns, which were usually locked in large gun safe in master closet or in a small wall mounted safe in dad's dressing room. I held each gun several times in my life without supervision. It is my firm belief that keeping an unlocked gun in my house will more likely injure a family member than a burglar. Like you said, to each his own.
