fell asleep at my desk (imagine that) :mj07:

woke up gasping for air. i could get some air but it wasn't right/normal.

i was like gagging and coughing badly and then i realized i had swallowed a piece of hard candy in my sleep.

i could feel it rattling in my upper chest area and i couldn't quit gagging and coughing.

i started to pace and went to make some coffee because i knew the warm fluid would melt the candy quicker.

i was really struggling to breathe and was worried that i might cough the rattling candy into a position where it might block my wind pipe completely. but i couldn't stop coughing.

i was scared shitless.

then my step-daughter came down from her sleep and asked if i was okay. i tried to tell her what was going on and she started slapping me on my back.

finally, right before the coffee was ready, i coughed it up.

whew! what a scare that was.

question: suppose it completely blocked my airway. how does one do a solo fix in that situation?

jack, as an emt, they taught us how to do this if you are by yourself. basically you would perform the Heimlich Maneuver on yourself. you would lean over a chair, table, anything of the sort and basically ram into it the way you would if someone was giving you the Heimlich, right below your last rib so it forces air up and makes you cough

i guess pretty hard, huh? i was hitting myself in that area but it wasn't helping. i guess if my air was completely blocked i would have done it much harder.

You're just like my old man in so many ways. He always falls asleep in his chair with those big round butterscotch things in his mouth. He developed pretty bad sleep apnea in the last couple years and now he sleeps with one of those masks, they told him he stopped breathing like 100 times an hour:com:

I said it was from worrying about the Butterscotches going down the wrong pipe all this time.

bad news. he can never get off of it and if he ever went away from home and forgot it, he wouldn't be able to sleep, period.

they can fix that chit now, just tell him to see a good ENT man. seriously.

i'm 52, so i'm guessing i'm near about the same age as your dad. maybe he's a little older......55-58?

Geez Jack that was a close one.

I think you should not fall asleep with them things in your mouth again.

I think I read one time that as long as your coughing you should be able to deal with it.

If yu start turning blue. Its close to meeting your maker.

Can you imagine us getting up and reading that madjack passed in the night .

What did he die of ? heart attack ? name a list of things.

No he died of a throat losinger stuck in his throat.

damn thats almost as bad as mama cass elliiiot dieing from choking on a pork chop sandwhich,

well glad you survived it.

Have you had a ephinany since your close call with being deceased ?

I went to a sleep clinic a few years ago and they said I had sleep apnea. He said to...

1. Lose weight. Which I did

2. No alcohol! :mj07: Wtf does he know?

3, Don't sleep on your back.

4. Use the mask. That he sells....

5. Operation...:nono:

Dad just turned 60, he is depressed about it too!

He always, ALWAYS snored. Couple years ago he started waking up and feeling like he didn't sleep at all. 8 hours sleep and wake up exhausted. Then, he started pulling a Kosar and dozing off at work and shit. Plus, he just looked really bad from it. Went to the sleep lab, etc. and now has the mask and LOVES it! After 6 hours he wakes up and feels great.

Sounds like he was a textbook case. Glad it worked out for him! Son in law also wears the mask.

I did some research about all this. I'm telling you man, IMO sleep is one of the biggest links to health there is!

The company that sells these masks, machines, etc. looked like a dam good investment to me. Millions of sufferers and it's just now starting to be understood/diagnosed.

Lots of people die of heart attacks in their sleep from this disease, IE: Reggie White.

you are reminding me of something i need to take care of myself. i'm ALWAYS tired. i never got the sleep study but he suspected i had sleep apnea. if i did have it i would get the sound wave treatment instead of the mask but i will look into this within the next week. well, after the holidays :D

i will!

I did it Jack. Was diagnosed as borderline. Spent the nite hooked up to a bunch of wires in a hotel like enviroment. They have someone watching you on camera all nite. No big deal.
