the header should read...""i thought the mainstream media were just biased ideologues....i was way wrong"...

it turns out that they`re just plain old incompetent morons....still not fact-checking their stories....

one of the most pathetic, horrific blunders of our time....

they reported that 13 of the west virginis miners were alive...and were going to be o.k.....the families emotionally ripped to pieces...in no small part due to shoddy reporting ....yet again....

my favorite, the n.y. times headline this morning...on the net...

""12 Miners Found Alive 41 Hours After Explosion""
By JAMES DAO
SAGO, W.Va., Wednesday, Jan. 4 -

""Forty-one hours after an explosion trapped 13 men in a West Virginia coal mine here, family members and a state official said 12 of the miners had been found alive Tuesday night.

Earlier Tuesday evening, the body of one miner was found 11,200 feet from the mine entrance, within a few hundred feet of a vehicle used to transport the workers deep into the mine, company officials said. The miner was not identified, and the cause of his death was unclear.

Joe Thornton, deputy secretary for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, said the rescued miners were being examined at the mine shortly before midnight and would soon be taken to nearby hospitals. Mr. Thornton said he did not know details of their medical condition.""

i`d pay to "not" have the times delivered to my house.....jayson blair must be laughing his ass off....

the usa today...the whole bunch....

and all the cable news outlets jumped the gun...cnn,msnbc and fox....

and not just the media...government officials were reporting this bullshit...

i don`t get it....there`s a pretty stark difference between being dead and alive(for most of us)...

bunch of fricking idiots...

how can a mistake of this magnitude be made?

how many of us would last a week on our jobs displaying this level of incompetence...

i hate the media as much and more than the next guy but this one was not the media's fault. everybody got caught up in the falsehood, people were celebrating, church bells were ringing and even the gov. was celebrating with the crowd. how else would this be reported? sure sounded like everything was going to be okay if you were watching. when my wife woke me at 3am and told me, my first reaction was "there goes the fuking media AGAIN" but after watching for the next coup[le hours and listening to to the pres of the mining company and the gov i understand how it got reported incorrectly.

nah....not the media's fault this time.

jack...we`ll have to disagree.....

relatives and family members celebrating positive "bad" information.....and the professional media fact checking their info and sourcing....

are two different animals...

...if the professional media had done their jobs correctly....and not, once again, run with a story before triple checking their facts, this wouldn`t have happened....

that`s their job...it`s not the job of greiving relatives, who understandably would jump at any positive information, whether it be right or wrong...

""It is unclear why the media carried the news without proper sourcing. Some reports claim the early reports spread via cell phones and when loved ones started celebrating most in the media simply joined in.""

that`s nice....but,that`s unprofessional,imo...

and this isn`t the first time...

the media is more interested in getting the scoop...than getting it right...

well, i'm certainly not going to defend the media, that's for sure. watching it on TV they kept saying that the reports we UNconfirmed. i don't know any other way they could have reported it. they were right on it when the negative news came out as well. they got the information from the mine area where they were not allowed to be set up.

who knows....

damn shame is all i can say. damn shame. can't imagine what the families are going through after such an emotional uplift only be to shot down like that. just horrible.

It is the fault of the media because any legitimate story needs to be checked out from different sources and confirmed at least twice. The reason that didn't happen is because everyone was in such a rush to break the news. This is hardly the first time something like this has happened, but it doesn't make it any less tragic for all involved.

Anderson Cooper and Geraldo were absolutely a disaster last night

I was taken in by it all in optimism myself but after a while started wondering where the rescuees are

Meanwhile, Cooper and Rivera maintained ther high pitched ramblings

Totally irresponsible and pathetic, pathetic journalism

And these people actually need a degree to be this bad

Regardless of one's political views, this is another example of why media reports should not be considered as "truth." Unless a story is confirmed as true (and sometimes not even then), it's just media babble.

I agree with the weasel on this one. The news channels should have been much more thorough. They all jumped at the first unofficial word and ran with it. And now they put all the blame on the mining company. They really need to accept at least half of the blame themselves. This has nothing to do with liberals, conservative, or any of the typical lunatic paranoid weasel rants - it's just plain incompetent.
