The media coverage has nothing to do with the importance of this ecologically, financially and morally. Of course the media is going to jump on something that has gone viral in every aspect of social media. They'd be idiots not to. Let's not blame the media because it leaves an ugly taste in everyone's mouth. They didn't poach a lion illegally.

Americans account for well over 60% of the lion heads slain annually in Africa. I find that number alarming considering the dwindling population of lions globally.

Rich American trophy hunters are greedy pigs. This guy is no exception. Now the hunter has become the hunted. I have no sympathy for this asshole. I hope others will think twice about trophy hunting from here on out and if it took this story to go viral and the media to jump all over it, so be it.....

I don`t disagree with any of that and if it dissuades trophy hunters,i say great...I think this guy is a p.o.s. myself...and as I said, looking at his past history of poaching and being a general shitheel in other aspects of his life, the attention he`s getting has a sort of Darwinian appeal to me.....

....but you can`t ignore the fact that the media is the one that pushes the news...I think yyz`s point that this probably doesn`t merit quite this much attention given some of the absolutely horrific shit that`s going on around the world.....we had numerous genocides in Africa...we`re having children`s heads chopped off in the middle east because they won`t convert to a particular religion......

we have a sort of mass genocide happening daily in our inner cities, yet this is given short shrift because "cops"..............

i`m glad walter is getting his dirt pushed back(wheres that damned saint !!....all those dentists are alike !!:chairshot)...but i also think it may be a tad overdone.....

bottom line....i essentially agree with you....shooting an animal with a hunting bow and arrow and having to track it for 40 hours of pure agony for nothing more than sport sickens me...

I guess if I was you or YZ I would stop watching or reading the media coverage. Africa has 54 countries & 23 still allow game hunting with S. Africa having canned hunts. If this can move more countries to shit can these hunts then it is well worth it. I feel that is important IMO not yours. I hope this post isn't leaning towards political, hate to see you run to Jack or IE to have it moved. One last thing that blog of YZ's you can read in english & french only, I hope the majority of Aficans enjoyed the read.

c`mon mover...low blow....i don`t consider this political....i essentially agree with the sentiment against the dentist and trophy/canned hunting(go back and read my posts)......but i also agree that the coverage is a bit over the top.....

whatever side you come down on,the point`s been made in spades and cecil`s killing should inevitably result in(at the very least) dissuading other walters from killing animals for sport....

Zimbabwe Largely Indifferent About Cecil the Lion
by Alex Griswold | 3:10 pm, July 30th, 2015

CecilDespite the uproar in America and the rest of the first world about the death of Cecil the Lion at the hands of a Minnesota dentist, and despite numerous press reports describing Cecil as a national hero, Zimbabweans don?t appear to actually care.

Reuters has an excellent piece detailing the depth of the African nation?s indifference to the big cat?s untimely demise. For example, when Zimbabwe?s information minister Prisca Mupfumira was asked about the death of Cecil the Lion in a press conference, his answer was simple: ?What lion??

?Are you saying that all this noise is about a dead lion? Lions are killed all the time in this country,? one street merchant told Reuters. ?What is so special about this one??

?Why are the Americans more concerned than us?? said another. ?We never hear them speak out when villagers are killed by lions and elephants in Hwange.?

Most Zimbabwean newspapers put the death of Cecil in its inside pages, and the government still hasn?t issued a statement. Most national news sources didn?t even bother sending reporters to the trial of two local men accused of luring Cecil, and had to rely on the Western news outlets who did.

Fair enough GW.

But the media does report all the atrocities that you spoke of. I hear it all the time. I'm a news guy myself. I read a lot of things that are published. Those have been in news for a long time now. You can't keep beating people over the head with it. Anything new, "news," gets reported. Period. This IS NEWS. People want to know. No one can deny that. It's a big story for a lot of people. It needed the attention. People need to be aware of these trophy hunts. Of animal extinction. Of the financial conduit to a national park in Zimbabwe being cut off. Of yet another ugly American doing something immoral. And on and on and on.

I've always gone by this rule of thumb when reporting on things that are distasteful. If it moves a few people to do something about it, then it's worth all the coverage we give it. Most the time we're told we don't do enough.....

some people were saying that these canned hunts bring big money into Zimbabwe for conservationism(this guy paid 50 g`s)......i was wondering given Robert Mugabe`s history of despotism and corruption how much of that money actually goes toward "wildlife conservation"?........

I've been hearing the argument from hunters that a majority of the money spent by hunters or gun clubs or whatever, goes to conservation. Guess what? If they weren't hunting and driving animals into extinction, there'd be no need for all of their money for conservation. It's contradictory. 'We pay big money for conservation so we can go out and destroy the planet....'

To answer your question. There is so much corruption in those countries I would never think all the money donated for feeding the poor, conservation, police protection, etc, etc, ever gets to its intended purpose.

yeah...i`m sure quite a bit of the money from canned hunts goes toward "wildlife conservation"(if the phrase "wildlife conservation"happens to include hookers and blow).....

The media makes more of it because the American public eats it up. You guys seem to forget we're the laziest country in the world. We don't care about people getting slaughtered because we can't do anything about it. ISIS isn't on yelp. The dentist was. It's simple really. A rally cry for action against anyone but ourself is what we do best.

Construct Carl is now in the co-main event of the PPV.

Make sure you include yourself in the PPV for idolizing the "war machine" and all the other monsters in the sport you cream your jeans over. You know.... The sport where half of them beat their wives and girlfriends nearly to death. Great role models you have there Kickster. :0074:0074

What don't I know about it? I don't have the time to list all the domestic violence charges against UFC/MMA fighters that have repeatedly choked out/kicked the shit out of women. The war machine fellow comes to mind first. Let's hear your version if you'd like to defend the "sport" you are so passionate about.

Not even going to bother with you......

But I will say.....

If Joe Paterno did what that dentist did you'd defend him and say he did nothing wrong, in fact you'd ask for a Paterno statue to be set up at the entrances to every Nature Reserve in Africa:mj07:

Oh and I am for all women beaters to be in a cage with a lion.......I got no problem with that. Just another reason why humans suck.

I do like MMA, NFL, NHL, ATP, and a bunch of other sports leagues.

They all have scumbags in them.

If you beat a women or kill a lion I got no problem watching them die.

That is all.
