CecilDespite the uproar in America and the rest of the first world about the death of Cecil the Lion at the hands of a Minnesota dentist, and despite numerous press reports describing Cecil as a national hero, Zimbabweans don?t appear to actually care.

Reuters has an excellent piece detailing the depth of the African nation?s indifference to the big cat?s untimely demise. For example, when Zimbabwe?s information minister Prisca Mupfumira was asked about the death of Cecil the Lion in a press conference, his answer was simple: ?What lion??
?Are you saying that all this noise is about a dead lion? Lions are killed all the time in this country,? one street merchant told Reuters. ?What is so special about this one??
?Why are the Americans more concerned than us?? said another. ?We never hear them speak out when villagers are killed by lions and elephants in Hwange.?
Most Zimbabwean newspapers put the death of Cecil in its inside pages, and the government still hasn?t issued a statement. Most national news sources didn?t even bother sending reporters to the trial of two local men accused of luring Cecil, and had to rely on the Western news outlets who did.
