Friday Notes: Shelton Quarles will not play against the Colts, but his status is still encouraging?Mike Alstott added to injury list?Martin at the mic
Quarles Out, Alstott Misses Practice
FB Mike Alstott had tests Friday to determine the cause of some lingering neck soreness
Oct 03, 2003 - Under their first sunny sky of the week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put in a third straight spirited practice on Friday morning, but the day's main developments originated back in the training room.
Head Coach Jon Gruden announced two significant changes to the Buccaneers' injury report for Monday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts. First, fullback Mike Alstott has been added to the list due to a neck strain. Second, linebacker Shelton Quarles has been downgraded from questionable to out.
Alstott is still considered 'probable' for Monday's game, but he did not practice on Friday. Instead, he was off campus undergoing a few tests on the lingering soreness in his neck. Gruden said Alstott's injury was not a new one, nor something that was aggravated during the two weeks of practice since Tampa Bay's last game.
"He's had some nagging neck issues as a lot of football players do (during) the regular season," said Gruden. "It hasn't been a problem. He's just had some soreness in there (and) it's been lingering. For that reason, we want to make sure that we get him some specific information as to why this hasn't subsided. We're listing him as probable and we'll know a lot more later. We'll see what is causing him this problem."
Alstott owns both of the team's rushing touchdowns through its first three games and he is the franchise's all-time leader in that category, with 47, and in total touchdowns, with 59. With his bruising, tackle-breaking running style, neck soreness does not seem terribly surprising. However, Alstott has only missed four games due to injury in his eight-year NFL career, and Gruden does not expect his Pro Bowl fullback to add to that number on Monday.
"The Indianapolis Colts are undefeated, we're a game behind in the NFC South, we're playing at home, we haven't played for two weeks?we're excited to play this game."
Quarles, on the other hand, will sit out his fourth consecutive game since fracturing his left forearm and dislocating his left elbow in practice on September 4. Nevertheless, Gruden presented that information on Friday with a very positive tone. While Quarles did not gain clearance to play just a month after the injury, he does appear to be on the verge of returning to action.
"Shelton Quarles will not play, but he is getting real close," said Gruden. "We feel like he needs an extra three or four or five days of strengthening that arm in a contact situation. It looks much better for him next week, but he will not play against the Colts."
The Buccaneers' next game after Indianapolis is at Washington on October 12. Gruden stopped short of predicting a return against the Redskins, however.
"I'm not going to say that," said the coach. "That will be determined. He'll have to go through some tests and, obviously, he'll have to practice a little bit and see how it feels. We'll comment on next week next week, but he's out for this game."
Quarles has practiced for the last two weeks, but he has not participated in any contact drills. He was evaluated at the end of the week by Head Trainer Todd Toriscelli and the Bucs' team of doctors, and the final decision, as it is with all injured players, rested with the medical staff.
"If it was up to me, I'd let Shelton play whenever he says he can play, but that's why I'm not a doctor," said Gruden with a laugh. "We're already way ahead of schedule and we're going to make sure that this injury heals properly. When he's ready to play, he'll play. He's getting close, he's just not quite ready.
"He hasn't played contact football for a month. He's not quite ready. He needs to continue to rehab and strengthen that. The bone is healing very well and he's very close to being able to play, but precautionary measures are going to 51-percent (outweigh) our desire to play him."
The Bucs have a bonus day of practice on Sunday since the game isn't until Monday, but the majority of the team's on-field work has been completed. On Friday, Gruden seemed pleased with his team's focus and effort during the week, and he once again dismissed the idea of Tony Dungy's return to Tampa being a distraction for the Buccaneer players.
"I believe this is the return of a great coach and a great man, but our team has had great concentration," said Gruden. "We need to win the game. The Indianapolis Colts are undefeated, we're a game behind in the NFC South, we're playing at home, we haven't played for two weeks?we're excited to play this game. I truly believe that and hopefully it shows in our play."

Martin at the Mic
Buccaneer kicker Martin Gramatica and his brother, Arizona Cardinals kicker Bill Gramatica, will team with guitarist Carlos Santana this week on ?Monday Night at the Mic? on Monday Night Football.
On select halftimes of Monday Night Football this season, top NFL players will jam with their favorite musicians in a competition leading to a champion voted upon by NFL fans.
Players who have a strong interest or experience in music are paired with stars of the music industry. The pairs record three popular hits from the artist?s collection. The NFL star will sing, play an instrument, DJ, dance or some combination of those four.
At the end of each segment, viewers will be instructed to go online on ABC?s Enhanced TV, through NFL.com and ESPN.com, and vote for the player they think performed the best. Winners will move on.
On Monday, St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Kyle Turley and hard-rockers 3 Doors Down will compete against the Gramaticas and Santana at halftime of the Indianapolis-Tampa Bay game.
?To have the opportunity to sing with Santana, a legend who is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is an experience that I will never forget,? says Bill Gramatica. ?It is pretty cool to join him and his band on stage with my brother and sing a little bit. We had a great time.?
Brother Martin adds, ?I was excited just to meet Santana and the whole band. Just the way they prepare for a concert was amazing to see.?
