The new place we are moving has a Koi pond in the side yard. It's about 5 feet deep in the middle. I have attached a photo. We have young kids and we are not interested in keeping it as a pond for a variety of reasons.

My questions is, what do we do with it! I know it will dry up if we stop pumping water into it, but looking for the lowest maintenance solution to convert it to something else. Maybe a garden, fire pit, play area? We plan to have goats, chickens, and more as well as several gardens and maybe even do some aquaponics.

Let me know if you guys have any unique ideas of what we could convert this into.

Thanks

build a waterfall into it...and put a hammock out there....

I will get the fish out and use them in my aquaponics. For a lot of reasons you can't do that out of a pond.

I don't want this mosquito factory around and it would be a huge worry with the kids which is half the reason we are moving to begin with- so the kids have a yard where we can let them loose!

mosquitos are taken care of with some tiki torches lit around it:SIB .....its like a tropical paradise

my nephews love mine and feeding the fish and what not....but i understand the hesitancy of allowing the kiddies to roam around there

Drain it, fill it with trucks of dirt and top with sand. Put a swing for the kids, a horse shoe pit? Or a sand trap for chipping?

Best of luck with whatever you decide:toast:

I'm thinking of making it a big sandbox and play area. Then if we want the kids sort of contained in there while we do something in the yard, they would be fenced in. Swing-set, etc.

post a sign wanting free fill dirt..if dumptrucks can get to the skeeter hole.

save ya alotta cash with free fill dirt..

putting green sure makes a lot of sense to me..

even tie in a tee box ...

you can also post a want ad of craigslist for free fill dirt..

dumpers love a spot for free to dump instead of paying at the landfill.

ya might get a lead of cheap sifted topsoil as well//

country style should run ya about 12-15 bucks a cubic yard for topsoil..maybe even a little less out there in the sticks..

agree with betone and old school--fill it in --make a play area there--geting free fill dirt is a big plus. Put a big Hawkeye statue in the middle of it:00hour

The aquaponics thing is very interesting to me. Can u incorporate the carp/koi into that if u transplant them?
