I agree, I think people are making a bigger deal out of it than it is. It is illegal so he is cheating, so should get a suspension and he will. But how many pitchers are there in Hall of Fame that have cheated?

I think there are more people cheating in the game than people may think. Let's see how many players speak out against Sosa. It should be interesting, I just hope some remember that those who live glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I mean, yeah, he messed up and got caught, but it's not THAT big of a deal. There's a lot of argument as to if it even helps a hitter, and if it does, it didn't become illegal until around the 50's, so anybody with huge stats before that (Ruth, Foxx, etc.) could've easily used the same thing. I just think people are making too big of a deal out of this. Give him his suspension and be done with it.

Yeh so he messed up and got caught. OK forget it I wont do it again OK. Let me just go back like nothing has happened and play tommorrow. No one will care.

I thought that this was the american pastime ? I thought there was still some integrity in the major leagues. I thought our kids would not read in the papers about any more cheating in sports.

Make a example out of him. Out for the season.

Will someone finally show these money grubbing athletes that cheating will not result in a slap on the wrist but a kick to the nads...

I would think that someone that intentionally broke the rules (i.e. speeding in his corvette) and getting a second chance would believe in someone else making mistakes and getting that same second chance.

You're lower than a snake's belly crawling through a wet rut of a red wagon wheel.

"the bunker"
corking a bat

corking a bat

it`s not something you do because you`re bored.....it`s a deliberate act......i like sammy ,but i have to say i have lost respect for him due to this incident....more so due to the fact that he obviously tried to spin the story.....he cheated....then he lied about it....the lying was the kicker for me....just be a man, admit you made a mistake, and take your medicine....

and if many of these guys aren`t on steroids, then mark geragos is not a sleazy s.o.b.....more than likely, the ramifications of steroid use will manifest themselves many years down the road for some of these guys....ask lyle alzado.........

what kind of world is this that we live in?....... where a black guy is the top golfer,a white guy is the top rapper and germany doesn`t want to get involved in a war....

interesting times we live in...

If any of you actually think that he should be suspended for the season or have his stats erased, you're ignoring decades of standards set by MLB. Don't post much but been here for a while, alot of you guys say some funny and crazy shit, but this could take the cake.

Not even to mention that of the hundreds of bats he has broken in his career, this is the first one with cork in it.

5 games. His reputation is definitely tainted but once its all said and done, the numbers will still speak for themselves. I gotta believe that just about every one of the guys in the 500 homer club tried it at one point or another also.

Waldo, Figures a guy from my home state of Illinois would be the only one that makes any sense.

Players have been cheating in baseball 100 years. You know it, I know it.

As far as the resident village idiot Beantown saying anything about steroids and Sammy is a stretch at best. You think it is abnormal to gain 30 or 40 or even 50 pounds of muscle mass in ten years? I gained 23 in Marine Corps boot camp alone at the ripe old age of 17!!!!! Gimme a break, anybody that does well or may actually dedicate a summer to getting in better shape and getting stronger is automaticall on steroids. That must mean Tiger is mainlining.
A corked bat is exactly that, who cares. EVERY and I mean EVERY major league player has tried cheating to gain an edge whether it be to make the spring AAA roster with a scuffed ball or pine tar on the seams or a corked bat or whatever. I got news for you every league record he broke was owned by somebody that cheated a hell of a lot harder than Sammy.

You know what you friggin hypocrites........you are on a GAMING sight judging whether or not some guy who you may or may not like, did something that is cheating. Get a grip. Right none of you guys ever tried to get an edge. None of you ever used illegal means to obtain anything in your saintly lives.

So far Scott is a saint, Saint PWAQUATSI or whatever, Saint no pepper diggin on the guy because he has trouble learning the most difficult language in the world without an accent. Do you guys ever listen to yourselves? Geezus, I don't believe this. You that is wtihout sin.

He got caught, just like the trainers in the NFL doctoring air pressure in the footballs for the kickers, owner collusion, illegal gambling, speeding, smoking dope, drinking and driving, taking a few extra minutes at lunch, calling in sick when you aren't sick, cheating, and everything else. This is a frigging game that he plays better or at least as well as all your favorite players and all you worry about is when he is going bad. None of you have a shred of proof that he is amping steroids or anything else except your own little petty jealousies. What ever Sammy does from here on out or what was done in the past is not nor will not be diminished.

Fuhkin hypocrites:gf:

This Friggin Hypocrite has no sympathy for Sammy Sosa whatsoever....nor do I plan on developing any in the near future.

Maybe thats because I understand how the system works. Everybody.....and I mean EVERYBODY who makes a decision to cheat in and outside of baseball knows there's a price to pay if they get caught. In the case of baseball, theres not only a monetary/suspension price to pay.....but theres also the factor of widespread public scruitiny. Every single major league baseball player who has ever put on a jersey and has agreed to earn 100 freakin times more than the average working man who calls in with the shits when his ass is just fine has been well aware of what the price was for being caught cheating. Ya get caught....ya pay a price.....but ya still get to go home to your bulging bank account.

Sammy Sosa doing steriods? No proof. Either doesnt do em or hasnt got caught.

Sammy Sosa using a corked bat? Busted and is now paying the price.

I know as a kid if I would have found out Julius Erving was a cheater....it would have broke my heart. Enough Said.

And this is a gaming website.....but a General Discussion Forum where opinions are free to be levied.

just because other players may cheat, doesn't mean that it is right. he got caught doing something that is against baseball's rules, so he should expect to pay the price(fine & games). it is similar to a pitcher caught using a spitter, he must pay the price.

it is pretty simple,if we get caught breaking the rules, we have to pay the piper. athletes should be no different.

OK, I believe him.

They?ve x-rayed Sammy Sosa?s other 76 bats, and none of them contained any cork. So, OK. If Sammy says he had one corked bat that he used to give the crowd a charge during batting practice ? and if that bat was, in fact, marked ?corked,? then it would appear he?s telling the truth. Slap him on the wrist and send him on his way.

AR, of course its not right, give him a week off and move on. Should not have any effect on the credibility of his numbers. No proof whatsoever that he EVER used one before. Seen him break countless bats, never been an issue. Checked his bats at the Hall of Fame, no cork. If all the good that he has done for the game of baseball is tarnished or forgotten because of this it would be a travesty.

And for all of those jumping him because they think he is on the juice, stop watching the game! IF he is on it, he is clearly not the only one, just one of many. If that bothers you guys, watch another sport where all the participants are saints. Good luck in finding one.

I think the expression on his face after is broke says it all. He looked like he was watching someone push one of his kids off a cliff.

waldo,

i agree. other than the one he was caught with there isn't any proof that he used corked bats at other times. hopefully he will sit out the games against the yankees, boy do they need help.

i don't think that baseball tests for steroid use, but they should.

I really don't think a corked bat will give you a noticeable change in distance. Think about it boys - it is simple physics. Yes you can swing the bat faster, but why? Because there is less weight, and guess what boys? Less weight = less distance. (I'm starting to sound like BTJ) So I think it is a wash as far as distance is concerned. The only real advantage is bat speed IMO. You can get the bat around quicker so you have a better chance at making contact with the ball. Almost every player nailed for a corked bat has been trying to pull out of a hitting slump. I think Sammy was just trying not to strike out again. JMO

Chad,
Good to hear you finally got moved in. I'll try my best to drop in sometime bro! ;)

Iminforabuck,
Yes you are right you are a hypocrite

First of all less than 5% of baseball players make it to the bank let alone have a bulging bank account. The fact that you would penalize a human being because he/she makes more than you is a joke. You have no idea what some players endure in their lives before they finally get MAYBE five years of good money. I guarantee you ate a hell of a lot better than Sammy for a very long time during your life, hypocrite.
Public scrutiny? A two hour special on ESPN isn't public scrutiny its a lynch mob. He got caught using a corked bat in a friggin GAME for chrissakes and you want to dock him his salary and all his life accomplishments in the field but you don't have a problem with the people from Enron or Worldcom keeping all their money or Darryl Strawberry, or any other number of people in other walks of life that commit far worse crimes that have a much greater affect on society than a damn game tying single. He is paying his price he admitted guilt, he claimed it was a mistake and you want to jump on his ass about his salary and steroids. Don't tell me you know anything about the game because if you did you would never make a statement like you did, you know nothing about baseball and the tribulations of a player trying to make it in the bigs. Hypocrite.

Stuman,
FYI, there is not a player in the league that will used a corked bat to get out of a slump, just the opposite they will use it when they are going well. The chance of breaking a bat and such when you are going well pale in comparison when you are going poorly.. Honestly they only use a corked bat when they are "raking" as David Justice put it.

AR182,
hey buddy. Yanks are going down with or without my boy Sammy;) ;)
