I think dan is predicting the end of the world as we know it.

Isreal is a wealthy nation with alot to offer and has by what Chan posted. They deserve to live in peace.

It all comes down to land issues and its obvious that a growing nation would want more land for their citizens to live in peace. Trouble is land is what this whole thing has been about for so many years. Palestine thinks they stole it. Isreal thinks it is rightfully theirs.

I am encouraged to see Abbas trying to get a hold on the terrorist groups. Its a start. no land is worth this killing fields.

They've been fighting over there since the crusades....don't think it's gonna stop anytime soon because there's incredibly deep seated religious and ethnic traditions involved.....they'll have about as little success over there as they would trying to abolish christianity over here....

It isn't happening now, or anytime soon.

We've practically completely forgotten about OBL, the next wake up call we get will be when the next major terrorist strike happens in the USA....

The voting/democracy attempt in Iraq is a complete joke.....expect the warring factions in Iraq to kill off most of the elected in short fashion, just in time for a bloody civil war and then watch the next thug take over, somewhat like the last time with Saddam....

The US won't want to get involved a second time, knowing full well that it never worked out the first time, and will just watch the blood flow.(hopefully, that is. I thought Korea was a lesson in not fighting other countries civil wars, but then along came Vietnam and now this mess in Iraq.)

Democracy will never work in the middle east.....best find ways to lessen our demand on middle east oil by developing alternative energy sources and suppliers....

For those who think that democracy in the middle east will exterminate terrorism in the world, I need only point out guys like the unabomber and Tim McVeigh, who were living smack dab in the middle of the largest democracy on the planet. Democracy will not change the terrorist agenda.

Someday the oil wells over there will be pumping sand and then the only hobby left for the arabs and jews over there will be the usual exchange of blood and bombs. then they'll have to trade something other than oil to get thier gunpowder.

they may be pumping sand alot sooner than many think if iran gets their hands on a nuclear capability....

we fell asleep on n.korea....but,the global ramifications of n.korea going hot pale in comparison to a middle eastern conflagration....

actually, the whole area could become uninhabitable for around 100 years is things get out of hand....

how does the world`s economy survive that type of scenario?....

that`s why you guys that throw your hands up in the air and give up always make me laugh....

are you all europeans?....

democracy won`t stop terrorism?...it`s a very long shot...i don`t like the odds either....but,it has a better shot than finding an alternative energy source.....

we are talking holy war....the crusades in reverse....all over the world.....

the "westerners in out homeland" crap is a straw man.....
a straw man in the same fashion that "the jews" were for the nazi`s...

has nothing to do with indonesia, the phillipines, the netherlands...the problems in europe....

the u.s. represents everything the fundamentalists despise.....

democracy...freedom of religion.....freedom of choice.....free market economy....self determination for it`s citizens....equal rights for women...

the fact that the u.s. is the preeminent economic and military force in the world makes it the prime target for the jihad....and also makes it a target of europe....who wants to be the power in the world(and large parts of europe are undergoing an islamic conversion...might take twenty years...but it`s happening).....

if we never bought another barrel of oil,it wouldn`t change our terrorist problem.......is anyone delusional enough to believe that most middle eastern governments would want the u.s. to become oil independent?....to extricate itself from middle eastern involvement...kuwait?....

does anyone think that the u.n. would have had the wherewithal or the stones to remove saddam from kuwait on it`s own?....c`mon...

they couldn`t or wouldn`t do anything about the ethnic cleansing in rwanda and sudan....

and who kept israel in check while it was being bombed by saddam...curbing an escalation of the conflict?.....the u.s.a....

we are in this for the long haul,unfortunately...

"...is anyone delusional enough to believe that most middle eastern governments would want the u.s. to become oil independent?...to extricate itself from middle east involvement...kuwait?..."

No doubt about it, they want us dependent on thier oil....this guarantees that the countries of the middle east have a big brother in the world to defend them and drive out foreign armies......no need for them to spend billions on defense when big brother USA steps in to liberate Kuwait, put out the oil well fires, then turns around and goes back home to face record oil prices.

We should own the Iraqi oil wells right now for the simple fact of war reparations from the first time we were over there.

Instead we paid for it all and then left and settled for a good ole' financial a$$ packing.

In light of how things turned out, we should have let Saddam roll and then ask the middle east "What's it worth to kick him out?" and just see how serious the arabs were about keeping thier palaces and riches and keeping thier women from an endless Iraqi gangbang.

gw

If I understand this issue right it goes like this.
But I am not sure.

The reason we don't want other countries like N Korea to have a N bomb is not that they would explode one on enemy turf. That would be suicide as they would get nuked from all directions.

The reason they want them is that it gives them a edge and makes people stand up and notice. Much the same way the US has its arsenals.
They are immediately in a differant arena.

So its money and power issues again.

I simply cannot believe that is true, gw.

The fact is, that at current rate of usage (which will only increase!) the Middle East won't be the only place on Earth pumping sand.

Sure, it's not going to worry you or me...or even our kids....but in 250-300 years fossil fuel is going to run dry.

The fact is, we are going to have to deal with it sooner or later.

Just imagine if we were spending $177 mil a day on alternative energy research!
...Won't happen, because the oil corporations are effectively running the place.

marco, i agree with your last panel...well said..the fact that we are big brother extends far beyond the middle east...but is sometimes necessary to keep other nations out of the business of rebuilding their own arsenals...

dogs...i also agree with what you said...that and the fact that n.korea is very poor and might try and sell technology because they need the resources....very bad....and the item you cited regarding countries using the bomb as a lever( a means to an end)....very true...

unfortunately, that bridge has been crossed in the far east...

but,the middle east is a whole `nother can of worms.....and having the bomb as a bargaining chip with the world`s economy hanging in the balance is a very scary proposition.....

as i said...the straits of hormuz could be controlled or shut down....or saddam might still be in kuwait....

very scary stuff...

mr c....not saying that finding an alternative energy source shouldn`t be a top priority....

just saying that it won`t have much of an affect on the issue of terrorism ....

i don`t think that`s changing...for a very long time...and as you said it`s a moot point...alternative energy may be at least a generation away...

i did hear that a new energy source is being considered and could be implemented in the states in the coming year...

the government has hired an army of dwarves and midgets to be dispersed throughout the country to periodically blow into the keyholes of homes during the summer months....

see...maybe you`ve been a little to hard on the president....

I was being 99% sarcastic the other day when I 'blamed' Bush for not pushing alternative energy....I do realise it goes much further than him.
Oil complanies will have the next 5-10 presidents in their pocket as well.....over a barrel you could say :D

My point is, a realistic alternative energy source should not be a generation away.
Surely we (as a human race) aren't going to let the oil run out before we try to come up with something new??...Now that would be the end of the world as we know it. (July 2305! )

Why wouldn't it have an affect on terrorism? You yourself have been saying, deny them funds?

(btw...thanks for the gl...gunna need it here in the early game :cursin: )

why should it be more than a generation away?.....

infrastructure...in a word....massive...intricate...multi-layered...expensive...

i covered this in another panel....

and like it or not, with the war draining resources,it`s not feasible....

how about the europeans finding an alternative?....or some other country?...why does it have to be the u.s. leading the fray all the time?....how about the aussies?

isn`t it funny how we are criticized no matter what happens...never doing enough...doing to much...

you think the current terrorists are bad...i fear for the safety of whomever...or whatever discovers an alternative energy resource...

you can imagine what the powers that be(oil corporations....opec et a)l would do to continue controlling the world`s energy supply.....

so much at stake...

btw......what about the midget suggestion?...i`ve been mulling it over in my mind....

......G.E.E............Gardenweasel`s Energy and Entertainemt...

our mission statement..

"to harness the inherent power of midgets to provide clean, reliable energy, and a source of entertainment for mankind."

the blowing in the keyhole thing might be a bit farfetched...but....

.....the worker midgets will run on a treadmill-like device which will power a static energy generator...... a system of bell tones and speaker commands, will communicate to the midgets what to do....... their will also be a computer console which will enable visual contact via a two-way camera teleconference....... this will allow the midgets minimum oral feedback......

are you ready to print money,mr c?.....just give me the word.....

uhhhhhh...a start-up fee of $10,000 will be required....you understand...but,we`ll quadruple that in the first month...and the title of the corporation could be negotiated....

Hey, anything involving midgets and I'm in, gw!! :thumb:

I didn't suggest it had to be the US doing it...But simple economics would suggest that the world's largest economy, world's largest GDP would have the most $ allocated for research etc. etc.

And, yes, with the current war going on, it likely isn't feasible....but is that a point?...Maybe there is another, better way to 'fight' this war on terror ;)

And, yeah, I realise that implimenting a whole new energy system will take years and years and years....all the more reason, I would have thought, to start developing something (other than a few battery powered cars) as soon as possible.

On a bit of a tangent.... Given that most research/development flows on from the military, it's now quite ironic that the vast majority of the military budget (and then some!) is being spent on the physical war machine, and not research which could be invaluable.

Anyway...I think we both agree it's not going to happen any time soon.

I'll head off to find out how I go about getting a licence to export the vertically challenged ;)

How about we integrate:
MrChristo's incorporated dwarf's, and;
gardenweasel's energy transmitions inc., to make......

....M.I.D.G.E.T. inc. :brows:

we dont even need alternate energy right away. we could solve a significant amount of our immediate dependency by simply CONSERVING.

mr c...i hate to provide this info in a public forum...but,i sense i have your undivided attention...

so this is what we`ll need...

worker midgets........

will take turns running on a hamster type-wheel with an attached harness...the three worker midgets will each take eight hour shifts, one per day per midget.....the worker midgets during their sixteen hour off-period will be responsible for the up-keep of the midget- containment area............

gladiatorial midgets .........

will be trained in the rudiments of hand-to-hand combat......each will be given two small weapons to fight with or in some instance they may have weapons grafted onto their hands........at weekly intervals the midgets will either fight each other in mock combat or fight a small animal such as a pig or monkey to the death.......appropriate measures will be taken so that they do not become dangerous to the master.....they will oversee the worker midgets....

i have a grid and flow chart worked up,but i can`t get it onto the computer.....

anyway, with patent laws and such it would probably cause some problems if the "inner-workings" of such a lucrative venture were published in a public forum....

i`ll keep you posted........partner... :em71: : :mj08: :mj14:
