I think a major issue is difference between gay rights and definition of marriage. I certainly think that the majority in favor of defense of marriage act are not against gay rights..your wife's employee would also indicate that.
On your analogies above---there was never a vote by the people..they were done by amendments to constitution... so would be difficult to determine just how split "the people" were on either.
...but I'm going to put on my handicapping hat and go out on a limb as say that since.. women have generally represent 50% of population. I doubt they could have ever been over 1/3 of population at the very most that would have been against women rights.
