MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday he plans to protest Alabama's decision to hire Mike Shula at the state Capitol next week.

Shula was hired as football coach Thursday over Green Bay assistant Sylvester Croom. Jackson said in a telephone interview from Chicago that he wants to draw attention to the selection of Shula, who is white, over Croom, who is black.

Croom was an All-American at Alabama and spent 10 years as an assistant coach with the Crimson Tide.

Shula, son of NFL coach Don Shula, has spent 15 years as an NFL assistant, including the past three with the Miami Dolphins. He played at Alabama but has no experience as a head coach or on a college staff.

"They chose culture and legacy over excellence and it's insulting," Jackson said.

A message left with Alabama athletic director Mal Moore seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Jackson said his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition was organizing a rally at the state Capitol for Wednesday night to address the coaching situation and other issues related to racial inequality in Alabama.

"This issue is just suggestive that the culture of racial exclusion ... is still prevalent in Alabama," he said. "It's not just in football coaches, it's in bank lending, mortgage lending, the criminal justice system."

Jackson said the decision to hire Shula showed that the state has not progressed far enough beyond its segregationist past.

He compared the university's decision to hire Shula to Gov. George C. Wallace's "stand in the schoolhouse door" on June 11, 1963, when Wallace sought to prevent two blacks from enrolling at Alabama.

"Wallace ... blocked the doors many years ago," Jackson said. "Now you got athletic departments closing the doors."

Alabama president Robert Witt and Moore told Jackson before they hired Shula that they were considering minority candidates for the job.

Croom was interviewed along with Shula and Carolina Panthers coach Richard Williamson, who is white.

Jesse Jackson is the biggest turd in the world....bar none. First of all, what in the hell does he know about football?!?! Mike Shula could be a great coach and give a great interview and he would never know it. All he is concerned about is filling every job possible with black people. Without regard to qualifications, black people should be handed jobs just because they are black. This guy doesnt even pick his spots...ANYTIME a white person is picked over a black person he has a problem with it. I am pretty much tired of his line of chit. I think I am going to go out and complain about Marvin Lewis getting hired in Cincinnati. There were plenty of other guys that couldnt have been hired for that job. I mean, hell, we have United Negro College Funds, Black television just to name a couple of ALL BLACK organizations. If we had all-white organizations, we would be shot. Black people still feel they are owed something from the world, and the fact is that the people doing the whining never had any experience of slavery or oppression in their lives. It is a fact that there are more black crimes in the world, a fact that there are more college educated white people in the world, so if a black person gets a different look on the street than a white person, it is overall perception, and there is a reason for it. Now, granted, I have many black friends and they are pretty smart guys, so it doesnt go across the board, but you dont have to look hard to see why there may be a perception that white people may be more qualified for these jobs.

And dont get me started in that dumbass rule in the NFL that says you HAVE to interview a black person before you hire anyone. First of all it is insulting to black people IMO, and if I own a team, who in the hell is going to tell me who to interview? It is bullchit and racism of the worst kind. If I were an owner, just to prove a point, I would bring in Bill Cosby himself and have him interview for a coaching job.

Bottomline.....there are just as many jobs given to black people because of their color as there are jobs given to white people because of prejudiced bosses. And my perception of the whole thing is that most black people would rather be owed a job from chit they never experienced in the world rather than getting their arse out there getting college educated and getting a job on their own. Jesse Jackson kinda proves that whole point.

The Reverend was just here in Houston because Black leaders think they are "entitled" to 30% of the business in the new downtown arena. Jessie Jackson is a joke and most people know it. He cares very little about the average Black family in the United States. I know that we have some stellar members from Ohio that can probably add to this, but this is how I heard it. If you remember, Jessie and Company made a huge deal and subsequent protest over the fact that 14 Black men were killed by the police in Cinncinnati in the past 3 years. He got alot of headlines and tv time. The truth was that only one of the police killings was questionable, and 13 of the 14 men killed were armed. During the same 3 year period, more than 300 Black men were killed in Cinn by OTHER BLACK MEN! Evidently, Jessie wasn't concerned about that fact. The same thing goes in Los Angeles. If a cop shoots a Black man, Jessie and company will be here within days screaming for justice. Yet in this same city, hundreds of Black men are killed each year by other Black men. Jessie appears uninterested in dealing with that problem. There is no question that discrimination exists and that police misconduct occurs. And, yes, it is reprehensible. However, Black on Black crime is the far greater problem in almost every big city and Jessie does nothing to deal with that fact.
