Have to laugh.

O says "and it will all be paid for"

My mind instantly adds in (by China). :mj07:

He should take a look at the UK - a few of the things he proposed have been tried there and now they are trying to unwind them.

Also, the $30B for teachers and $5B for police should be flip-flopped. Will need more police to handle all the riots.

But hey, much like the $787B Stimulus bill (that Trench says was NOT a stimulus bill), this NEEDS to be passed ASAP.

Who cares? What's another half-trillion?

The word "stimulus" is just a moniker. The "stimulus" bill was actually titled "The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act". Another poster referred to it as a "Jobs Stimulus", which it clearly was not.

Perhaps you could explain how tax cuts, food stamps and unemployment benefits "stimulate" the economy and job growth?

Do those things help the middle and lower classes make ends meet during a recession? Yes, but they hardly "stimulate" economic growth.

If im a businessman which i was at one time im all for people getting those unemployment benefits cause they are gonna spend it and hopefully in my shop. Realistically id rather they had jobs but money is money and i need my clients to have some. Unemployment benefits will stimulate the economy a lot better then more tax breaks for a select few.

i liked the speech it was dead on. To bad the republicans couldn't care less and will destroy the country to get in the whitehouse. You would think any right winger who heard what that asshole from Kentucky said about the number one thing the right needs to focus on was making Obama a one term president ya might be a little ticked off. If i heard that kind of garbage from the left i would call them out on it. U would think the number one thing would be jobs and not just one.

In my opinion anything getting money into the economy is a good thing. Tax cuts for the rich does not do that. Like Spong said the Middle and lower classes will spend the money.

Very true, Sponge. My point was really that the stimulus bill wasn't designed to stimulate economic growth, which is a common meme of the right-wing because they keep asking "Where are the jobs?" when talking about the stimulus bill. The stimulus bill was designed more to stop or at least slow down the economic hemorrhaging and runaway job losses that resulted from the global economic crisis of 2008.

in the Jobs bill:

"Pass this jobs bill, and starting tomorrow, small businesses will get a tax cut if they hire new workers or raise workers? wages. "

Hmm. From other threads here - demand is what causes employers to hire. BUT, Obama wants small businesses to hire people or raise their wages so that they can get a tax cut.
Net jobs created : ZERO

"Pass this jobs bill, and companies will get a $4,000 tax credit if they hire anyone who has spent more than six months looking for a job."
Same as above - net jobs created: ZERO

"Pass this jobs bill, and companies will get extra tax credits if they hire America?s veterans."
Again - no demand, no new hires. touchy-feely but won't make someone hire.

"Pass this jobs bill, and thousands of teachers in every state will go back to work. "
Good and bad, IMO. Jobs are good but i'd rather see jobs created in the private sector v public sector as the public jobs still have to be paid with taxes, not out of profit.

"It will rehabilitate homes and businesses in communities hit hardest by foreclosures."
Why? Why rehabilitate foreclosed homes to add more homes to the backlog of unsold new and foreclosed homes? I'd rather see a construction firm paid to bulldoze the homes. Prices can not rise until there is demand. Lower the supply.

"The plan also extends unemployment insurance for another year."
Good and bad for me. i'd hate to think of people on unemployment losing their coverage. However, coverage is at 99 weeks already. Now they will add another 52 weeks to it? Yes - it is money coming into the economy but where is the money coming from? it is either being taken out of the economy via taxes or it is being borrowed.

"Pass this jobs bill, and the typical working family will get a fifteen hundred dollar tax cut next year."
Good. Any tax cut for working families will get applause from me.

"I?ll also offer ideas to reform a corporate tax code that stands as a monument to special interest influence in Washington. By eliminating pages of loopholes and deductions, we can lower one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world."
Bravo. Too long in coming. I hope that it happens.

I see good and bad in this proposal. I give him credit. At least it is a start. i'm not convinced that this isn't just the start of his re-election campaign but we will see.
I do know that I do not envy the position that he is in

ssd wasn't most of those tax cuts on condition of hiring more workers instead of a cut just to cut taxes?

yes - and I am saying - a business will not hire someone to get a tax credit. they will hire because they have demand and need employees

i can't argue with that but if all those construction projects started he was talking about u, put a ton of people to work which causes demand. Now if u are on the fence with hiring someone u now have incentive to hire them.

The stimulus bill was a good bill until Obama caved. I find it funny that Republicans get their tax breaks again but call the Stimulus a failure. This is what can really piss people off about Democrats. Why not say something about this? Are they really this pathetic getting a message out or do they do this shit to just piss off half of their supporters? How fukin scared can u be?

From what I've seen, and I've watched a lot last night and today, both legislators and commentators alike have said there are good things about this package - many that were either wanted or originally proposed by Republicans. Of course there are some things I and others don't like. That will never change, I don't think.

But to dismiss it like Rove and those who post him as being the authoritative commentator on this (or anything else political) do is not constructive, fair, or realistic - in my opinion. Does it do everything? Nope. Nothing that could be proposed WOULD do everything - because it wouldn't pass.

More needs to be done. For sure. But some of this is sensible, and good for the country.

From what I read it was like groundhogs day from last trillion dollar speech--once again his answers to jobs is 2 years unemployment and I see he's went back to shovel ready jobs after recently admitting no such thing--

I liked Rove's take--

Twelve Words to Describe Obama's Jobs Speech

USA TODAY calls it Deja Vu but same take--

Deja Vu All Over Again - USA Today

Reuters more to the point--

The President's $447 Billion Re-Election Plan - James Pethokoukis, Reuters

botton line is once again the grift being played in speech to his base

While he adamantly said pass this bill some 15 times --how many really knew/knows
--there is no bill yet
--it's not been written and no one knows what will be in it--so how can anyone but the biased who don't care--be for passing something they don't know contents of.
