Well, the company I work for just went thru a down-sizing and I was 'displaced'.

I only have 3 yrs managerial experience and was lowest with tenure...

they gave me 30 days, so 11/30 I am offically terminated and then will mail me a severence package....I'm hearing 3 weeks for each year, so that would give me 6 months...

I'm obvioulsy disappointed, yet I knew I would probably be first to go...

Please comment on the 'severance pkg' process, I've never been through his before. Is it lump sum or every 2 wks, Does it stop if/when you get another job..

Your severance package you will get a flat fat check, and it won't matter if you get a job or not. Unless it's one of those dickhead companies that you had a contract with and said you couldn't get another job in that field for so many years after leaving. I've heard of horror storries with people and them jobs.

Sad to see you lost your job. Keep hangin in there and hope you find a good job.

lawtchan,
Sorry to hear about this man. Good luck with finding a new gig. I was let go about 2 months ago due to downsizing. I had 8 years of upper management experience, plus 3 years of law enforcement during that time. I was release with nothing but the box of shit from my desk. No notice or severance. The best word of advise I can offer is try to stay busy and don't dwell on it. If you are going to try for unemployement go early because it takes time to get things moving. I know its tough but things alway have a way of turning around if you work them. Good luck boss.

Cheers

Sorry to hear that. I went through the same thing about 9 years ago. I had 27 years with the company when they decided to fold. My severence was a weekly check and should not stop when you find a new job. I was 46 at the time and it felt like a kick in the balls I got through it. I'm sure things will work out. GL

Latchan, about 15 years ago I volutered to be laid off from NEC. At the time the package they offered was 2 weeks for every year. With our plan I got a check every two weeks. Kept my medical insurance and even accured vacation time! They had said not to apply for unemployment benefits until I receieved the last check. When I got another job the checks kept coming. I hope your plan is a good as that one was.

You'll be fine. Just do what I did, go to Vegas/California/Oregon for a month and play cards/golf :)

Walked in one day and they call an emergency meeting to tell us our agency was sold. Do I want to stay (and work for a bank)....fuck no, ok here is your severance package. :mj07:

What I'm saying is don't stress, a lot of times this stuff works out for the best! Find a little time in the job search to do something you have been wanting to do, on them! You will probably end up way better off than you were before, I did. :mj06:

Maybe come to Colorado and lets go ski!

my package was similar to StevieD's. I got 3 weeks pay with my vacation added and it came every pay period (bi-monthly). some companies will, however, pay an all-at-once sum.

i applied for unemployment benefits the next day i was let go and promptly received a direct deposit 2 weeks later at the maximum allotted amount of $378/week.

hint: do your 5 minimum work searches through online resources such as monster.com and you'll never need to write anything down for tracking purposes.

welcome to the club. :toast:

Best of luck to you, and those that may be facing this. Very tough times, and it affects real people. Hopefully your severance package will make it easier for you to take the time to find something good moving forward, and please take time to not get caught up in the expected down times mentally - if you have them.

Maybe it's time to spend a week or so thinking about what you'd LIKE to do with a career/job, and pursue that first. Then go for options you'll NEED to do.

Sincere best wishes, keep your head up.

5 years ago I ELECTED for the severance package from Pfizer when they bought my company. It was 6 months paid out 2 months AFTER my official termination date, and yes in one lump sum. It was like finding a bag of $ on my porch, as I got better job a week after being officially let go, and making double the $$ plus I got that severance package. Good luck.

very sound advice...

consider this...

wise man told me this a long time ago but I never heeded his message until 10 years ago..

"Every man should do for a living what he would do for free."

that opportunity is now yours.

good luck to you, lawtchan.

I also encourage you to take this time and think about what you would like to spend your work time doing. Then find environments where you will get many more rewards than just a paycheck at the end of the day.

Maybe in a wax museum based on your haunted house?? :)

Yes Sir Good Luck Latch--

You can see there are several good stories from folks here that went through similiar situation.

Hardest thing is the anxiety of losing job--generally many end up better off afterwards.

Is there any opportunity of self employment in areas of your field? With severance package and unemployment it might give you ample time for startup.

Here is a list of Medical/Pharma positions available if you feel like looking into that field, just not sure what you do currently. List of GOOD recruiters on here as well, it just costs 30 bucks a year to see the jobs in detail, not just the headers. Good luck, fortunate this has never occurred to me, but it has to several friends.
