Kentucky man shoots down drone spying on 16-year-old daughter

http://www.dailydot.com/technology/kentucky-drone-shooting/?fb_ref=Default

Where should we draw the line between the advancement of technology and the protection of personal privacy? For one Kentucky man, his property line is where he gets to make the call, and he made that point of view perfectly clear when he pointed his shotgun at a drone hovering in his backyard and pulled the trigger.

"It was just right there. It was hovering. I would never have shot it if it was flying," William Merideth said in an interview with Ars Technica. "When he came down with a video camera right over my back deck, that's not going to work."
Merideth claims that the drone was first spotted hovering over his neighbor's house?a claim his neighbor confirms?and he had no intentions of taking any actions against it until it entered onto his own property. Merideth's 16-year-old daughter was laying out by their pool at the time, and when the drone pilot decided to stop his vehicle and get an electronic eyeful, he decided enough was enough.
The homeowner fetched his shotgun and pumped three helpings of birdshot into the $1,800 drone, taking it out of the air in short order. Shortly thereafter, the drone pilot and three of his friends arrived at Merideth's property.
"If you cross that sidewalk onto my property, there's going to be another shooting," Merideth says he told the men.
The police eventually arrived and Merideth was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and first-degree wanton endangerment, both related to his discharge of the firearm. The 47-year-old Merideth is confident that the charges will be reduced or thrown out entirely once his trial date arrives.

I know nothing about guns so what is the range for accuracy with a shotgun ?

It turns out that the drone had GPS recorded and it was never closer than an altitude of 200' so that wasn't trespassing and the guy might have to pay for the drone he shot down. It will be heard in court.

I guess a shotgun is fairly accurate at 200'

Jeez 200' which I automatically convert to a football field 65 to 70 yards. Damn that's far. I always thought if I was to ever buy gun it would be a shot gun

So that changed your mind?

I'm no expert but it sounds far to me too. It must be because a shotgun sprays the shot and covers a wider range than a single bullet.

The article says "bird shot". That would be a 7.5 or 8 pellet which is accurate and deadly on small birds up to a near maximum of 40 yards. He didn't take down a drone at 200' unless it was severely fragile and a lone pellet took it out. If I shot The Boys or some other character at 200', it might sting, but it's certainly not deadly. They shoot prisoners in jail with shotguns loaded with birdshot to break up fights and would be riots at close range. I have taken care of guys with pellets lodged under their skin.

A 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 3.5 shells containing buckshot and max powder load can kill a goose at 60-70 yards occasionally (that's called sky-busting), but I would never even take a shot over 40. I think the drone was way closer than 200 feet.

I saw a video of the drone owner showing the GPS route it took and that video was showing 200' but I agree with you, it's too far to shoot down and the guy must be bullshitting. I'll try to find the video later, I have to mow the lawn now.

Why would you want to shoot me? Oh yeah you live in KY, that explains it.

That drone owner is full of shit. He said in the video the drone was never lower than 100 feet. Later his video shows 274 feet. He definitely was 100 feet or lower for it to be taken down by birdshot.

I think Meredith had a right to shoot that thing down if it was hovering over his property that low where his daughter was sunbathing in privacy. The problem he will have is if was in a subdivision discharging a weapon. I think he might get a fine for that, but I think the other charges as related to the downed drone should be dismissed. You could tell the drone owner was a creep trying to get a good shot of scantily clad girl. :nono:
