2. Kill the clock (rule)
By John Harris
What the heck is the business with the clock and the starting of the clock on change of possession? This is just insane. Stop the clock in the final four minutes of the half after a first down; other times, let it run, similar to the NFL. Take for instance, in the Ole Miss game Monday. Memphis cuts the score down to three in the final three minutes, then kicks off to Ole Miss. With the clock moving after the kickoff, Ole Miss let the clock run down before even running a play ? killing 40 seconds in the process. Memphis had time outs to use, but didn't right after the kickoff. Do coaches now have to call time-out after a kickoff to save time or after a punt? Seriously? That's nuts. Essentially, if your team has a lead with two minutes left after kickoff, and the opponent has all three timeouts left, your team can still run off nearly 40 to 45 seconds off the clock, not to mention the time it takes to run a play. What kind of reward is that for a team that manages the clock well and doesn't call a time-out throughout a half? If your opponent has two timeouts or less, it now becomes 90 to 100 seconds of time they can kill. This ruins the end game, completely. Give teams the final four minutes of each half to be competitive, especially at the end of the game. Run the clock throughout the first 26 minutes of each half, but give team and coaches the end of the half to try to win the game. Each team has a "get back" coach on the sideline, now they need a "how much time is left" coach.
..........................................................

This is really affecting the game. Not sure but the unders must be compensated for.

shorten halftime.
shorten the number of commercials
start the clock on kickoff but not during CoP
make all TDs 2 point conversions in OT
start OT on the 30 or 35..

Actually a team can kill "only" 25 seconds off clock after recieving kickoff, as gameclock starts the same time as 25 second play clock. They had to do something tho as games were running 3 and a half to 4 hours long.

They didnt have to do anything.

and if it matters that much, then they should have eliminated OT as well, right?

I don't care for the change-of-possession rule. But I don't mind the clock running as ssoon as the ball is kicked on the kickoff.

I like sdf's suggestions. Shorten the halftime period to 15 min.

Put a time constraint on any replay review. 1 min. sounds reasonable.

sure they did....with the passing game being more popular in the college game, games started becoming extremely LONG and occasionally, BORING even with close games.

starting the clock after a punt-kickoff is the stupidest thing i have ever heard of.....eliminating the clock stoppage after EVERY first down would have been great....why the hell does college even have that rule?.....all the other time changes are fine and would have shortened the game enough.

the way they changed the rules, significantly changes end of game scenarios.

If they wanted this rule fine, but put it back to normal with 5 minutes to go in the game. Timeouts are now extremely vital and if my teams didn't have the right people of the field or wrong play I would just tell them to take the penalty.

Gjn the game is fine. Doesnt matter how long it lasts. If that is a controlling issue something is very wrong. The games we all remember all involve late comebacks and last second scores - those would all be gone. The first down clock stoppage is one of the reasons why teams can come back. Nothing wrong with that. The NFL is the first one to alter the clock and the NFL has become much mor eboring - can have a 6 play drive take 5:30 off the clock - that is ridiculous.

Some guys on a Texas message board sent emails on this issue to the committee members. Below is the response from Tommy Tuberville (or his office) - memot o all to never believe a word he says - this had to be a joke:

These rules were put into effect for the saftey of the student athlete not tv. thanks for your interest.

guess we disagree (no shock there)....i love college football but 1 hour quarters......a bit too much.....4 hour games......a bit too much....170 plays in a game....a bit too much.....the clock potentially stopping every 5-7 seconds (incomplete pass, first down, out of bounds)......a bit too much

again....the game was okay as it was....start the clock when the ball is kicked off....big deal, they are saving 4-5 seconds on every kickoff.....eliminating the clock stopping on first downs (i could do without that rule, or implement it in the last 5 mins of each half) but to start the game clock after kick offs, punts, fumble and int when there is a change of possession is a joke.....it changes the game more than it saves time.

now teams leading only need to get the ball back with 2:45-3:00 mins left and they essentially can run out the clock after a kick/punt

So I post that the changes are wrong, then you say we disagree and then to proceed to discuss why the changes are wrong?

Per USA Today article today 14 less plays per game on average. That is ahuge impact on the results of games. I guess USC fans wish this was around last year....
