Freeze,

Kind of putting the cart before the horse, aren't ya? You have labeled him commiting adultery by a few photos that show some cheek kissing.

This guy went to a frat party..drank a few beers and talked some shit....Big Fawking Deal. If I was held accountable for the things I have done since I turned thirty..I guess I would be out of a job and probably in morality jail if the members of this board were a jury.

This guy did nothing wrong. He drank some beer at freaking frat party. He stayed out late. BFD

You can't be shocked at some people putting the cart before the horse. It wouldn't be a forum without that happening.

If people can't see the difference between a 47 year old, public employee of a state institution, going out and having a few drinks at a bar or party and a 47 year old, public employee of a state institution going out to co-ed parties at different colleges of opposing Big 12 schools, getting toasted with 19 year old girls, kissing them and refusing to leave the party while at the same time belittling his players, not sure what to say. He's a married man with two children. Sure, anyone is entitled to a good time. But this steps the boundaries of what is appropriate for a resprentative of a learning institution and has the highest profile of anyone involved with the school. I couldn't care less if he went out with some friends and got sloshed to high hell. We are talking about 19-20 year old students he is partying with and obviously was hitting on. Now some of his players are questioning if they want to play under him. Saying they wish he could show the same commitment that they do..not going out partying with opposing players after losses and insulting his own guys. Wake up. There is a big difference.

This is why there is a problem....

This is why there is a problem....

Now it's said that Coach Eustachy admits he has a problem with alcoholism. He says he realized this about a month ago, and will seek treatment for this disease. It's certainly a personal issue, but one which affects job performance and family relationships. His conduct has sparked this outcry, and now we can say that it has brought him to confront his personal demons. Let's just hope he's being honest with himself.

Whatever happens to him (and I don't think he should necessarily be dismissed), I hope he cleans up his act and moves on in his life. His passion is basketball, and there's no reason why he shouldn't continue coaching. If only the ISU had confronted him and taken a harder stance earlier on, soon after the photos were published. :nono:

If Bill Clinton is married and gets to have his knob schlobbed by an intern and stay in office as the country's leader......then Eustachy should not be fired for some beers and kisses on the cheek. He's been a man about it and admits he has a problem and says he's getting help. His players are all coming to his defense and are begging for him to stay (whether he got hammered with them after practice or not:D.) His wife is standing by him 100% (whether she's worried about losing her big dollar shopping money or not:eek: ) No one is alleging that he didnt do his job......or that he was drunk on the bench during games. I just think there are worse things in this world than a guy who falls prey to party life and is caught by a camera being kissed on the cheek.....especially when that guy steps to the plate and says 'I did wrong....I'm getting help'

He's admitting to getting help for his problem for the wrongful termination suit that his lawyers are probably drafting right now. The guy is a pud.

Regardless of why he said it......it was the right approach.

I really do hope they follow through and fire him.....it looks as though they will. That way he gets a brand new start somewhere else....and I'll root for him there to overcome his own adversity and rise to the top. I've had plenty of problems in my life to deal with and eventually overcome......so from one pud to another....I hope he continues to excell as a coach no matter where he's doing the coaching.

coach has 5 days to request hearing on matter

coach has 5 days to request hearing on matter

got this from the espn site.

Wednesday, April 30

Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa State basketball coach Larry Eustachy was suspended Wednesday after acknowledging he is an alcoholic, and the athletic director urged the school to fire him.

Three hours after Eustachy said he has sought treatment but will not resign, athletic director Bruce Van De Velde held a news conference of his own to announce that Eustachy would be suspended with pay and should be replaced.

Eustachy has five days to appeal to the president's office.

Van De Velde said Eustachy was informed of the recommendation to fire the coach at 11:30 a.m. ET Wednesday, so that Eustachy knew the recommendation when he held his news conference to admit he was an alcoholic at 2 p.m. ET.

Eustachy is 101-59 in five seasons at Iowa State, including 17-14 last season. In 13 seasons as a head coach, including stops at Idaho and Utah State, he is 265-145. Eustachy guided Iowa State to Big 12 championships in 2000 and 2001 and was the AP national coach of the year in 2000.

Van De Velde took the action because Eustachy "had engaged in behavior that is inconsistent with his responsibility to conduct himself in a manner that reflects positively on Iowa State University and the university's athletic programs."

Van De Velde said he could not comment beyond a prepared statement that he read, and he left without taking questions.

Eustachy's attorney, Jerry Crawford of Des Moines, would not say for certain if he would appeal on Eustachy's behalf but would "evaluate all of the options available."

"He is an enormously talented coach who is facing up to his problem," Crawford said. "We hope the university will ultimately decide to keep him."

Eustachy's admission at a news conference earlier Wednesday came after photographs were published of him partying with college students in Missouri. The photographs, published Monday in The Des Moines Register, show him partying with the students and kissing young women.

"It's not my way, and I won't (resign). I believe in second chances, I do, but time will tell," Eustachy said.

He apologized to his family and his players.

"It hasn't been easy for them in the last few days," he said. "Words can't express enough the remorse I have, that I've brought upon everybody."

He said he realized he was an alcoholic nearly a month ago, and is now seeking help.

"For the rest of my life I will seek counseling for this illness," he said. "I have no excuses for my behavior ... we'll see what happens in the future, but I am looking forward to the future as a sober person."

The photographs touched off a national buzz and prompted calls for Eustachy's dismissal or resignation.

Eustachy is under contract through the 2010-11 season and is paid more than $1 million a year.

Eustachy's behavior was a hot topic on radio talk shows, both local and national. The Register said in an editorial that Eustachy "has to go."

Iowa State's basketball players went to the university's president and athletic director Tuesday, urging them to keep Eustachy.

"I'm behind Coach Eustachy 100 percent, as I know he would be for each and every one of us," forward Jackson Vroman said.

Vroman said the players told university President Gregory Geoffroy and Van De Velde that they supported Eustachy and wanted him to be their coach.

"Bruce Van De Velde told us he would do what is best for the university and the basketball program," said Vroman, who will be a senior next season. "We want them to do what's best for the basketball team and that's to keep coach Eustachy."

Eustachy, 47, is holding a can of beer in the photos. The pictures were taken at a Jan. 22 apartment party in Columbia, Mo., just hours after Iowa State lost to Missouri. In some photos, Eustachy is kissing young women on the cheek or is being kissed on the cheek.

Eustachy's wife, Stacy also spoke at Wednesday's news conference. She said her husband is a kind and loving father to their two children and has learned he has to treat the condition.

"I'm totally behind him 100 percent, I'm totally behind this man," she said. "He's a human being like everybody in here. He makes mistakes like you all do and like I have.

"He stepped up to the plate and made himself accountable, and that's a great example to our kids," she said.

"...Quo fas et gloria ducunt..."
You have labeled him commiting adultery by a few photos that show some cheek kissing.

i don't think adultery is the correct term to use here.

MR. FREEZY(MD) said: cheat

many different definitions of "cheating".

some people think kissing another person on the cheek is "cheating", in this case with young 19 year old girls.....yes, i would consider that to be "cheating", the guy IS married.
There is no REASON for him to be doing that....if it's some girls that he knew, sure.

He did not KNOW these girls, although i'm sure he was trying to get to know them better......

but lemme re-iterate (because DR.STRANGELOVE may be reading this post of mine....), I AM NO JUDGE.

I was just defining a term.

Alcoholism is covered under ADA (American Disability Act).I may be mistaken, but I believe admitting he's an alcoholic prevents him from being fired for acts committed as part of the illness of being an alcoholic if he seeks treatment and doesn't have a relapse.

Eustachy himself -- not alcoholism -- is real problem
By Mike DeCourcy - Sporting News

Of all the strategic maneuvers Larry Eustachy executed during 13 years as a head coach, none was as predictable and transparent as his declaration -- disguised as an admission -- that he is suffering from alcoholism. It was the only play he had left to call.

Eustachy's behavior during the past season was so offensive he faced an inevitable dismissal from a job scheduled to pay him approximately $8 million over the remaining term of his contract. His one chance to avoid that outcome was to contend he was not responsible for his actions, but it is his irresponsibility that remains the central issue.

The announcement by Iowa State athletic director Bruce Van De Velde that he would move to dismiss Eustachy was a welcome rejection of the production staged Wednesday in front of the Iowa media. Eustachy's ploy had been so deeply cynical he allowed his children to be present at the news conference. The kids were there to generate sympathy, obviously, and not to field questions. This might have been as heinous as any of the coed canoodling that got him into this mess.

In the days after Eustachy became the most notorious frat party guest since Bluto Blutarsky, the university remained silent as it examined its options. That allowed the coach to fire a preemptive public relations strike and position himself for an appeal of his removal, but Van De Velde should be commended for refusing to be dissuaded from taking the proper action.

For Eustachy to hide behind alcohol as the source of the problem is a disingenuous, almost despicable maneuver. Alcohol is not remotely the problem here. Stupidity is the problem.

Having covered four different major-conference teams on a daily basis, I know coaches often enjoy the chance to sit with a beer in front of them following a road game and gripe about poor shot selection and dreadful officiating. There are plenty of perfectly respectable places an adult of Eustachy's age and position could partake of adult beverages: restaurants, bars, even his own hotel room. However distasteful it might be, a gentleman's club would be a more appropriate setting for a college coach to swallow a few brews than Eustachy's choice of attending parties at Missouri and Kansas State filled with college-age women.

One other postgame pursuit was available to him, something other coaches regularly do: breaking down the videotapes of his team's increasingly futile performances.

There are those who question whether Eustachy would be run out of Ames if his team won 30 games or landed in the Sweet 16 this past season. He had coached brilliantly in the past, building strong programs at Idaho and Utah State and leading Iowa State to the 2000 Elite Eight.

But this episode reinforced what was learned when Memphis dumped Tic Price in 1999 following the revelation he'd conducted an extended romantic affair with a university student. When this sort of nonsense is going on, what's not being transacted is coaching, recruiting and supervising the team. Back then, the Memphis program regressed as its coach became increasingly distracted. Iowa State's decline surely involved more than the departure of star point guard Jamaal Tinsley following his senior season in 2001.

There were numerous behavioral problems among the Cyclones, including the February arrest of reserve Clint Varley for a DWI charge and the public intoxication citation of center Jared Homan last month. There lately was a whole lot more of this stuff than there was high-quality basketball.

With Eustachy as coach, there is no way Iowa State could expect to operate a competitive, respectable program in the future. What would the recruiting pitch be the next time he stepped into a prospect's living room? "No worries, Mr. and Mrs. Jones. At least when Johnny hits the Delta Tau Chi house on Friday night, you know he'll have adult supervision!"

Since then I have always kind of wondered about ISU.......
