FEARS were growing for Paul Newman last night following reports he is dying of lung cancer.

The Hollywood legend is said to have been diagnosed at New York?s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, where he is having outpatient treatment.

Two US publications claim the 83-year-old, who is a former chain-smoker, is under the care of a leading oncologist at the Manhattan hospital.

One quotes a family member as saying: ?It?s so awful. He?s dying.?

Newman?s second wife of 50 years, Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward, 78, with whom he has three grown-up daughters, is said to be devastated.

Spokesmen for both Newman, who officially retired from acting in May last year, and the hospital declined to comment.

Newman?s rise to stardom was swift but he had to wait until 1986 to win the Best Actor Oscar for his role as a pool hall shark in The Color Of Money.

Surprisingly, the Academy snubbed his most famous part in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid with Robert Redford, now 71.

Redford is believed to be one of the few in the inner circle who is aware of the extent of his illness.

Above the Clouds....
He runs the "Hole in the Woods" camp just north of here for kids suffering from cancer. He sure puts a smile on the kids faces. I really admire him for the work he has done.

One of the all time greats that is for sure. I like his dressing. Never had the sauce though.

Didn't hear about Newman...what a great actor... we all have our favorites....he made so many good movies.....my all time favorite "The Hustler"....he plays Fast Eddie the pool player...challenging the great Minnesota Fats....Newman famos lines about feeling it is..

Fast Eddie:
You know, I got a hunch, fat man. I got a hunch it's me from here on in. One ball, corner pocket. I mean, that ever happen to you? You know, all of a sudden you feel like you can't miss? 'Cause I dreamed about this game, fat man. I dreamed about this game every night on the road. Five ball. You know, this is my table, man. I own it.

As a high school basketball coach I had my players watch that scene before playing our rival teams or big games...my kids got such a kick out of it...I would tell them that we are going to do that tomr nite...when we play..this is the game we all dreamed about..waited for..lets run that table..this is our court ,our table..." My players would crack up and laugh...they would say coach..." can you show us a clip from a movie with color in it...this black and white VCR tape doesn't work... I know my pre-game speech was a little corny for my kids but I always seemed to win the big game...and our chant in the lockeroom after winning was " 5 corner pocket".Not one of my players ever saw the movie...
Newman was unreal in it and was nominated for the academy award...he lost to Charles Boyer in Fanny..in the Color of Money the sequel he got the award...the academy knew he should of won it the 1st time...and Jackie Gleason lost best supporting actor to a guy from West Side Story who lipped synced[sp] all his songs...
great movie..if you never saw it...
will pray for Newman...a giant of a man..

i was a big paul newman fan also & agree with box that him & jackie gleason should have won oscars for that movie...& imo it was one of the great blunders in oscar history that they didn't..

i also once read & found very impressive that newman was the biggest philanthropic person in america but never liked to talk about it....
