With every new authority on presidential history.. LBJ gets higher and higher. mostly based on the civil rights stuff.

LBJ just did (with misgivings) what the "best and the brightest" Kennedy experts told him to do in the war.

LBJ did the Civil Rights stuff on his own. Without him there, it woulda taken at least a decade more to accomplish.

Ike sent a few random training teams there in the 50's.

JFK did NOT 'make it what it was.' He did dip the toe in a LITTLE more. What are you even talking about?

LBJ and McNamara escalated the whole thing beyond belief based on mis-information and flat out lies. Those two idiots make Cheney/Feith/Wolfowitz look like schoolgirls.

Let's not forget Nixon, who ran on the platform of getting out of there immediately, but instead immediately escalated it even more after he was elected.

Ike had almost a 1000 "advisors" in Vietnam, JFK escalated that to over 16,000 military personnel with deepening American commitment that include "American prestige" being on the line and heavy involvement in the coup that ended Diem, among other things.

Right, and then LBJ sent hundreds of thousands of combat troops in. JFK's were not combat troops.

So yeah, relatively speaking to LBJ, it was dipping his toe in. Just like Ike originally did compared to JFK.

I would put more emphasis on McNamara than LBJ Matt. LBJ may have been pres when it occurred but the guy was an emotional wreck over concern of war--and flat ourt refused to run for re-election on account of it.

Nixon--most unforgivable sin IMO much worse than spying on Dems was committed at Vietnam peace treaty in Paris. After they hashed out the deals--he met with South Viet Nam leader and promised if the North did not live up to agreement we would offer air support to combat them--not only did he lie about that--but cut off all funding (media pressure) to South and they could not even defend themselves--resulting in greatest slaughter in history--
