Hey, I'm joining ya guys....

Got on the scale a couple of days ago, and instead of giving me a weight it just laughed at me...

Got 30 pounds to shed.. started yesterday - my wife is helping and got me on the weight watcher point system (which worked great for her - not that she needed it).

I get 37 pts per day - which ends up being a lot of food if I'm careful what I eat.. been a day and a half, so far so good.

And, the key I think, is that I've committed to using our elliptical machine 30 minutes a day - done that 2 days now and felt great after doing it both days....

Hopefully I'll keep it up too....

I am also joining in... we started a 'biggest loser' thing at work. Doing it for 3 months, monthly winner (% lost) gets $10 from each person at the overall winner gets $25 from each person. We have 11 people in it and after the first month, biggest % lost was about 5%. I stayed even (lost .5 of a pound) but I am happy with that, as it was December, plus I went on vacation for a week.

My starting weight, as of 12/1, is 203.5, as of yesterday I was at 202. I hope I can get to 190 by the end of March.

Right now I have been counting calories and I play soccer 2 times a week. I try to limit myself to 2000 calories a day and I cut out a bunch of stuff (fast food, pop, fried food, desserts, pizza). I don't have an issue going to the gym except the only time I can go is before work and I am NOT a morning person. If I could make that part of my day, I think I could drop quickly.

updates???

I'm down 8 pounds since new year

Started at 200 down to 192.

I'm eating about 1300 to 1400 calories a day and less than25 grams of fat.

I'm fairly active, does this seem right or a little slow

shooting for 180 to 175

I think it's probably how you feel while losing. They say you shouldn't lose it too fast because you'll just put it back on plus some. GL

I'm down ten pounds and feel a world of difference.

Diet has been strict and allowing myself a good meal/few drinks on Saturday night each week has been great to keep myself motivated.

Keep it going guys.

weighed in at 219.5 this morning (from 230)

Been holding strict to the diet. I didn't have one beer the whole weekend. Had a Captain and diet on Sat and Sun but only one each night.

keep up the fight guys...

i've lost 7 pounds but was at 9 pound loss but should be around 12 pounds lost. i've done these calorie counting, 6 week diets 4 times in the last 2 years with much better success. the first time i lost 34 pounds in 10 weeks.

the only thing i want to lose is my spare tire, everything else i'm fine with. i can't afford to lose from my legs and ass but that's where it seems to come off.

i am thinking that my body has adapted to the decrease in calories i subject it to and has changed my metabolism (i do absolutely no excercise during these diets).

i'm thinking i lost a majority of water weight and muscle. when i gained the weight back i added more fat than before with less muscle.

i think i fcuked my whole body up with this crap.

if you only saw a pic of me from the waist down, you would think i'm thin. from the waist up, i am overweight. christ!

so, i'm gonna rethink this whole thing and start adding in excercise. i guess

any ideas? blackman? dawgball?

Jack,

As I have said before, I have a stationary bike at the house. I ride it for an hour on Sat and Sun mornings (while watching Biggest Loser reruns or Metal Mania on Vh1 Classic or whatever I Tivo'd). During the week I ride it for 20-30 mins a couple days and twice a week I lift light dumbbells.Curls (arms), overhead presses (shoulders), rows (back). Not much but I can feel it. My wife has a resistance band and I use that sometimes but it's prett wimpy so I do a lot of reps with those. I've dropped from 34% fat to 31% which is still pretty FAT!!!

Hoping that by Feb vacation (5 weeks) I am down to 205 and 28% BF.

good luck but I think you would want to do some cardio first to get rid of the spare tire and slowly add in a few weight lifiting exercises.

Metabolism is affected by your body composition. Muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. People who are more muscular are said to have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular. For example, let's say you have two people who are the exact same height and weight. One exercises on a regular basis with weights, in addition to aerobic exercise, and has a low percentage of body fat. The other never exercises and has a higher percentage of body fat. The first person who exercises will have a higher metabolism than the second person. What this basically means is that person #1's body will use more calories to sustain itself than person #2, even if they weigh the same exact amount.

Jack - I'm not sure how low you've gotten in calories but you may be in a catabolic state, as your body has grown accustomed to living on less calories (and adapted by losing muscle which needs that caloric fuel). The body is so adaptive and will eliminate muscle first when restricted because that's the part that craves the fuel the most.

I think you are right that you should start exercising a bit, but I wouldn't go crazy with it either -- three times in a week in the morning for 30 minutes of aerobic activity should be enough to kickstart the day.

I'm also a big proponent of timing of the meals. Eating 2400 calories a day broken down by 3 meals of 800 calories will be harder for your body to burn than 3000 calories broken down by 6 meals of 500 calories. Eating 6 times a day allows for your metabolism to be constantly working, instead of being overloaded then getting a break. Essentially let the engine run all day instread of going from 0 to 60 a few times a day.

Thanks Blackman, I think I have to adjust by what you're saying. I'm in the same situation as Jack. My wife said to me today that I have to get new jeans. Problem is I am losing in my ass and legs and not the spare tire.
What do you suggest for us 50ish guys to tone up? It's not as easy for us to dedicate the time sometimes. Also us older guys don't build the muscle mass as we did when we were younger correct?

Make sure to do weights in addition to cardio...you'll burn about 3x the amount of belly fat versus cardio alone.

I'm down to about 181 from the 193 I started at, 3 weeks in. Things are going smoothly..I do have youth on my side.

Trying to break through this plateau I am on. Keep cycling from 221-218 back to 221 after the weekend and down to 218 again this morning.

Maybe with the week off from football I can pull it together and get down to 215 by Sunday...

I have been eating pretty damn good. My exercise could use a boost. Still waiting for the gym to clear out all the resolution breakers.

Hope you're all still at it...:00hour

What's your point...yawn.

3 weeks in, still going strong

Start weight: 193
Current weight: 177

nice work Saint

Thought about this thread cuz I need to look after some weight issues myself. Hitting maximum density for this body real soon.

My voice changed the other day when I put my jeans on. And I don't think it's cuz I'm going through puberty again.
