I have a friend that plays for Green Bay as well as a front office guy, and a neighbor that is tight with Thompson (who played for the Oilers). Yes I do know what Thompson is thinking unless 3 different people have lied to me about what he has said.

To me it says a lot that he is so quiet on this issue........he remides me of the upper management type who thinks he knows more than anyone else and is jealous...........

Does anyone think the Packers snuck up on alot of teams lastyear, was it a GREAT season by Farve that carried this team....or was it a sound running game and solid defensive play? I dont remember them being mentioned as contenders until they actually got there....this year will be shitloads different, the running game that was so surprisingly good will be planned for and if Farve or Rodgers is QB defensive coodinators will take there chances with letting them beat them, Farve and Rodgers BOTH have proven thats beyond their capabilities. Things change ALOT once you show success, they will be marked with a bullseye versus teams taking them for Granted and thinking they arent good....IMO
Both teams that represented the NFC lastyear in the Conference Championship game will be hard pressed to get back to the game or possibly make the playoffs.:SIB

Packers file tampering charge against Vikings over Favre contact

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers have filed tampering charges against the Minnesota Vikings alleging the team made inappropriate contact with Brett Favre, a person familiar with the Packers' complaint told The Associated Press Wednesday night.

The person, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said Packers officials have expressed their belief that interest from the Vikings was driving Favre's sudden change of heart about playing football in 2008.

"They feel like Favre had something (in place), and that's why he was so anxious to get his release all of a sudden," the person said.

The tampering charges were first reported by Foxsports.com earlier Wednesday.

The person said the league already has reviewed evidence provided by the Packers, and team officials believe a league examination of telephone records would indicate more than "normal contact" between Favre and Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a former Green Bay assistant. According to the person, Packers officials also believe the contact began before Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, formally asked the Packers to release him.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league had no comment on the report. Cook did not return a telephone message left by The Associated Press earlier Wednesday.

The tampering charges added a new twist to the Favre saga, which seemed to be over when Favre retired in early March but now has been sizzling for several weeks.

Now, with Favre potentially headed back to an even chillier reception than the below-zero conditions in his last game at Lambeau Field when he makes a scheduled appearance at the Packers' Hall of Fame banquet this weekend, the next step in the iconic quarterback's plan to maneuver his way out of Green Bay is unclear.

Cook told ESPN on Wednesday that he and Favre have "no definite plans to ask for reinstatement" and it was up to the Packers to decide what to do next.

"It's their move," Cook said.

Favre currently is on the Packers' reserve/retired list. To be reinstated, Favre must write a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Once that request is approved -- a step considered a formality -- the Packers would have to release Favre or place him on their active roster.

Favre was in Los Angeles for Wednesday night's taping of the ESPY Awards. Host Justin Timberlake zeroed in on Favre sitting in the audience with his wife, Deanna.

"What have you been up to lately? I haven't seen you anywhere," Timberlake said. "Just chillin'? Yeah, me too."

Later, Timberlake went into the seats to hug Favre's would-be successor Aaron Rodgers, the Packers' 2005 first-round draft choice. Favre sheepishly looked down with a slight smile on his face as the crowd laughed.

That's just the first of several awkward moments potentially on tap for Favre this week.

Favre is scheduled to present former teammate Frank Winters at the Packers' Hall of Fame induction Saturday. Winters, former Packers defensive tackle Gilbert Brown and video director Al Treml will be enshrined in the Packers' Hall of Fame.

Should Favre keep his commitment, his return to Lambeau will come a little more than a week after formally requesting to be released -- and only days after expressing his distrust of Packers management, insisting in an interview with Fox News on Monday that the team pressured him into making his retirement decision.

Favre could see some of the same folks he criticized in his trip back to Lambeau. He also might run into Packers offensive line coach James Campen, a former teammate who was dragged into the middle of the controversy this week.

In an unaired portion of Favre's interview with "On the Record With Greta Van Susteren," Favre apparently said Campen recently made an unexpected visit to his home in Mississippi and said he had "an answer" for Favre regarding his desire to unretire.

"He says, 'You know, I know they told you they're moving on and playing there's not an option,"' Favre said, according to a full transcript of the interview obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Playing here in Green Bay is not an option, which that's what they want. They want to move on. But I'm telling you, if you reinstate or you force their hand, back them in a corner, they feel like they have no other option, they're going to accept you back."'

"And he said, 'Just telling you.' And I said, 'OK."'

In an interview with The Associated Press on Saturday, two days before Favre made his comments about Campen, Packers coach Mike McCarthy chastised the Favre camp for putting Campen in a "tough spot."

McCarthy said the Packers told Campen to visit Favre as a friend, not on behalf of the team, once they heard Favre was having second thoughts about retirement earlier in the offseason. McCarthy said it was Favre and his representatives, not the team, who turned Campen into an "intermediary" between Favre and the front office.

"I think he's totally, wrongly been illustrated in this," McCarthy said. "Ted (Thompson, Packers general manager) would not even talk to Campen about this. He said, 'Hey, your personal relationship with Brett Favre is bigger than this, so don't ever put yourself in that position.' ... James was put in a tough spot. He was put in a situation that was purely personal."

Meanwhile, members of the Packers' management team could face a few awkward moments of their own next week when the Packers hold their annual shareholders meeting at Lambeau Field on July 24.

A movement to rally fan support for Favre has fizzled so far. A rally in Green Bay drew fewer than 200 fans Sunday, and Monday's rally in the Milwaukee suburbs drew only 30 despite widespread local media attention. But shareholders supporting Favre could call attention to the issue.

Shareholders aren't expected to have the chance to ask questions during the meeting, but Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy and Thompson will be present to mingle with them and answer their questions afterward, along with other members of the Packers' staff.

Maybe the GB organization would be happy to move him and don't think it's in their best interests to explain Sybil to his adoring fans and lose some of his worth.

looks to me like GB and the GM may have possibly had a reason to keeping quiet :00x33

The Packers are stalling while they try to figure out how to handle the Favre situation and they want to be sure Favre's committed to coming back. That being said, Favre's not doing himself any favors by talking about the disagreements he's had with Thompson regarding personnel decisions he's made.

If Favre really wants to return to Green Bay, what he should be doing is keeping his mouth shut, applying for reinstatement with Goodell and plan to show up at training camp like a rookie trying to win a roster spot.

The thing that amazes me is that Favre has to know that in spite of the fact that Thompson and McCarthy are saying Rodgers is the guy now, it's meaningless in July. If the halftime score on Sept. 8th is Minnesota 21, Green Bay 0, it's goodbye Rodgers, hello Favre!

No one knows how either Favre or Rodgers will perform this year but the "We're moving on" statements are meaningless. It's all about winning. IF the Packers believe Favre's committed to playing and IF they believe he gives them the best chance to win and IF Favre manages not to burn every bridge leading back into Green Bay... yeah, the Packers will throw Rodgers under the bus.

Favre may be 38 but when he suits up, you know what you've got -- a chance to win. Rodgers, on the other hand, is still an unknown -- Can he handle the pressure when he's the man and can he stay healthy?

I wouldn't presume to know whether Rodgers can handle the pressure once he's the man; however, durability does seem to be an issue with him. With Favre, we know the answers to both questions.

These are just my opinions. I could be wrong.

Two of the best posts I've seen.

The absolute fact of the matter is that it should never have gotten to a GM point.
Favre retired...then he retired...

mav, jealous of what? Publicity? makes no sense...

...nor does simply saying, Rogers will be awful...

Having made a choice, having made a choice, having made a choice...
...pretty sure management (or their quite legitimate "long term" plans) can not be blamed for this mess!!

NFL Network report: Favre plans to report to camp

By CHRIS JENKINS, AP Sports Writer
1 hour, 36 minutes ago

Team officials did not immediately return telephone calls from The Associated Press. Packers coach Mike McCarthy is scheduled to address the media on Saturday.

Speculation on a potential new home for Favre has centered on Tampa Bay, but the New York Jets also are emerging as a potential trade partner for the Packers. On Friday, Jets coach Eric Mangini brushed off?but didn?t deny?an ESPN.com report that the Jets had been given permission to talk to Favre.

?With all discussions, those things are internal and that really hasn?t changed,? Mangini said, adding that he and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum talk every night about ?a lot of different things? but always keep them internal.

Mangini reiterated that he was happy with the team?s quarterbacks.

?I feel the same way as I felt yesterday and nothing?s changed,? Mangini said. ?With any conversations me and Mike have, Mike likes to talk about a lot of different scenarios and he enjoys a good chart, he enjoys a good graph and he enjoys a lot of scenarios. That?s what he does, and that?s what he?s supposed to do. So, just normal discussions that we always have.?

But when asked if the Jets were looking into adding any veteran quarterbacks, Mangini conceded that it would be ?normal operating procedure? for the team to look into ?different scenarios.?

?As I said, I?m happy with the quarterbacks we have and we look at a lot of different scenarios every night,? Mangini said. ?And trust me when I tell you that we look into a lot of different scenarios every night. It?s just normal operating procedure for us.?

And that?s just about the only thing normal in the ongoing Favre saga.

In an interview with Fox News last week, Favre said it was ?tempting? to show up to Packers camp to call the Packers? ?bluff.?

But, Favre added: ?I don?t want to go back there just to stick it to them.?
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)?Brett Favre told the Green Bay Packers he plans to report to training camp this weekend, the NFL Network reported Friday, in a move perhaps designed to force the team to quickly trade the three-time MVP.

Favre informed general manager Ted Thompson on Thursday of his decision and will petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to be reinstated as early as Friday, the NFL Network said.

Favre?s presence could cause a major distraction for the Packers, providing the team additional motivation to work out a trade.

The team committed to moving on with Aaron Rodgers after Favre retired in early March, led them to believe he was coming back in late March, then decided to stay retired?until he apparently changed his mind once again in recent weeks.

Packers players are scheduled to move into their dorm rooms on Saturday, and their first team meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning. Their first practice is Monday morning.

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy reiterated Thursday that if Favre were to return to the Packers, it would be in ?a different role??presumably not as the starter.

?We said we would welcome him back, and he?ll have a different role,? Murphy said, speaking with reporters after Thursday?s Packers shareholders meeting. ?But what?s going to happen if that occurs, we?ll have to look and see the situation at the time. That?s a little bit of a technicality. But I guess there?s two questions. We have said we would welcome him back. But whether he will come back is another question. And a lot of it goes back to, we want to work with Brett, and be fair to him and help give him what he wants.?

Packers officials have not publicly discussed the possibility of trading Favre, but Murphy might have hinted at such a move when he conjured the image of Joe Montana in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform.

?We want to have positive feelings about Brett and the Packers, and we want him to continue to be a part of the Packer family,? Murphy said. ?I think the way this is handled will be important in terms of how that plays out in the future. But I?m also cognizant of some of the things that have happened in the past with Joe Montana ending his career with the Chiefs. Now you look back on it, most people might not remember that he played with the Chiefs.?

Favre hadn?t filed for reinstatement as of Thursday.

?He has to file it,? Murphy said. ?It?s not like there?s any question it will be granted, but it?s a step that has to be taken.?

Once Favre?s request to be reinstated is approved by the commissioner, the Packers must place him on their active roster or release him. Thompson has said the team has no plans to release Favre.

The Packers have filed tampering charges against the Minnesota Vikings, suspecting that interest from their division rival was the main reason Favre suddenly changed his mind on retirement.

Favre?s rights belong to the Packers until his contract expires after the 2010 season.

Favre ripped Thompson during the interview for being untruthful with him on a series of personnel moves in recent years. But Murphy said Thursday he didn?t think a potential return by Favre would cause tension within the team.

?I don?t think so,? Murphy said. ?We have such respect for Brett and what he?s meant to this organization, there will be no tension. But that?s a call that Ted and Mike have to make.?

Packers easy schd last year 13/3. This year not so easy. My thought is with Favre 11/5 or 10/6. With Rogers under 9 wins in Vegas should make you a winner.
On thing Pack should remember. Favre was a team player. Three times he let Pack rework his contract so they had money to secure or pay other good players. He never played any hold out games about money. He just wanted to play and win. The T V rating when he was on went up. He was fun to watch. And folks can say what they want at this time he goes down as one of top 4 ever.

They can't possibly know anything about this guy. Last year was the first year he did anything.. One half of football against the Cowboys who didn't prepare for a scrambling QB. What did he do to follow that up? He strained a hammie in practice and had to sit for two weeks. Craig Nall was the backup. People say that he looked good in preseason last year. Well thats what it is PRESEASON. Oh another thing he played in a game two years ago and promptly fractured his foot.

I'm not saying that he won't have good year. Good line, receivers and tight ends are good, and Grant looks like he is the real deal.. Pack not wanting Favre back. I just wouldn't get too hyped on him

He certianly is unproven. He did come in for a injured Farve last year and did quite well.

Talking fantasy, not gambling,if you draft 2qbs cause of the bye hes worth a shot.I dont think he will be around after the draft ,if hes a starter, thats my take.

Brett said he will report. The coach said Rogers is his started they have moved on. What a JOKE. I believe the coach is saying what general manager said. I know if old GM was there who would be starting. Not Rogers. This GM we have now not a Brett favorite. Here we see it's a business. It's as it always is about money.

djv, GB has always been the anti-NFL. THE PEOPLE
OF GB OWN THE TEAM. as opposed to the Jerry
Jones and Al Davis's of the world. That's what
made GB so loveable even if you were in ANY
OTHER PART OF THE COUNTRY. EVERYONE
LOVED GB because they were the anti-$$$$$$
ownership as opposed to the $$$$$ dickheads.
That may change.

Coach Mac is stroking the good gracious of the GM. He can't serious being thinking I would rather go with Rodgers for the future. In the NFL, the life expentancy of a coach is a handful of years, and it is what have you done for me yesterday. With Favre, they would be in the top 5-7 for favorites to win it all. I want to win now, not tomorrow as I may not be here then. Um, hello? Toe the company line, biatchhhhh!

Farve is one of the best,no dought.
But dont you thing its time to move on??

Rodgers has upside and is underrated IMO.
He has the skilled positions filled.

Management and coaches must see the potential in him,or why bother.Nothing against farve, but he can do no worse in a stressful situation and throw a pick like farve did most of the time.

I agree for the most part with you, but you and I know the NFL is brutal. Win or get lost. And as a coach not a GM or Owner, I want the best talent playing, not tomorrow's pipe dream. GB has a window of opportunity and if they were to play that game again against the Giants I would bet on the Pack again. They were very close. Along with Dallas, they are odds on favorites to win the NFC, with Favre that is.

I certainly don't agree with his teetering back and forth, but if you had to bet on one game, do you want Favre or Rodgers? Most likely Rodgers will get hurt anyways, than what?

In baseball, and I notice your are a Red Sox fan, do you want to win now, or put up with the rebuilding 5 year plan like I have to put up with in the Pirates every freaking year?

Win now, and worry about or try for tomorrow....tomorrow.

:scared ...... TOP 4 EVER??? WOW, are you eating the cheese? In no particular order...

Montana
Manning Peyton(time left for accomplishments)
Brady(Ditto what I mentioned about Peyton)
Marino
Elway
Aikman
Steve Young

ARGUEMENTS could be made for ALL of these guys listed above whether its QB ratings, Super Bowl accomplishments, Yards and records.......and Farve will fit somewhere into this lineup....but TOP 4 ever, nah.....and these are only the guys I'VE seen in my short life....so I know a few of the elder members of the forum can add a few as well.
Farve is a GOOD QB, he has records of accomplishments but to me its mostly as a testiment of time, single season TD records, passing yards, and all that GOOD stuff belongs to the afore mentioned.....If I remember correctly he won 1 superbowl and wasnt even the MVP of that event as the LATE GREAT REGGIE WHITE(RIP) earned those honors. The other superbowl he particioated in he lost to ELWAY, if memeory serves me well.
