Ok, math experts, help me out.

I need to know the percentages of an event happening.

For example:
"Mary" wears jeans 60% of the time
"Jane" wears jeans 60% of the time

What percentage of the time will both wear jeans?
What percentage of the time will one wear jeans?
What percentage of the time will neither be wearing jeans?

 Thanks for the help!

There is a 36% chance that both will wear jeans (60% times 60%).

There is a 16% chance that neither will wear jeans (40% times 40% which is how often each one will not wear jeans)

You add those 2 and get 52% and the difference between 100% and that is 48% which is the chance that either one or the other will wear jeans.

I'd answer it for you, but the last time we had a math discussion here it turned into a 3 page long thread arguing about silly crap.

You're confusing that with the nine hundred and eleven thread I believe. :SIB :SIB

Thanks, Finfan!

We were going round and round with this at work, and it seemed there should be a relatively simple way to figure it out.

I went to the website Marine mentioned, and that really had my head spinning!

Once again, thanks for your help.

No problem. With all the pearls of wisdom I find here, it's nice to contribute something.

My dad was a math teacher, this $#!t is kind of engrained in my head...

Math always comes in handy. There's always some kind of crazy stuff that comes up concerning numbers. I thought I was always pretty good with numbers only to find out (lately) that I'm kind of math deficient.

The second question....do you mean exactly one wears jeans or at least one of them is wearing jeans.

exactly 1 = 48%
at least 1 = 84%

Edit...nevermind....I thought I saw the word either in there somewhere.

You guys are all wrong. the correct answer is 50% for each of the 3 questions. either it happens or it doesn't.

No, we had a thread about 2 months ago in which Extrapolater was asking how to convert moneylines to odds and vice versa.

we had a nice discussion about european lines vs american lines and bet +1 and all sorts of stuff.

It didn't have any references about hating bush, terrorists, american sheeple, organic foods, or zionists.

So you probably missed it.

I agree with FINFAN. Looks like he has the best interpretation. marine's declaration requires a 150% maximum if each outcome is 50%.

And, by the way, I wasn't looking at how to convert American odds to decimal odds. Ever. Believe me, that I can perform. What I was trying to do was to see how others--other gamblers--assess value. Unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed by most replies and I would have to conclude that the secret to success in life is to own a sportsbook. Or a casino. Something along those lines.

To smoke or to drink.
That is the question.

(both)

okay, you crazy voice-in-my-head...knock it off
