Looking at getting a Metal Detector for my 13 year old son for Christmas......We live in an area with a lot of abandoned old rock foundation home sites as well as sandy beach fronts lakes/ocean to explore......Anyone have any info on styles/features to look for? I also see some that work in shallow water which he enjoys spending hours hunting for sea life ect.......

Thanks for any input......:0008

Make sure you double check the laws on metal detecting....city/county beaches vary with their regulations...national parks on the other hand prohibit metal detectors...I live within 30 minutes of miles & miles of beaches but most of it is national parks...don't mean to put a damper in your plans...sounds like a good hobby to get involved with especially in the kid's early years....GL

I bought my son a metal detector from kellyco

http://www.kellycodetectors.com/

I called them and told them where I was and what all we wanted to find and they were very helpful.

To be honest my son is 6 and wanted to look for "treasure" on the beach, I did not want him to be that guy so I bought one for me as well.

It give us something to do together besides building sandcastles.

Hope this helps - by the way the first time we went out we found a spent 50 cal machine gun round made in 1944 - did some research and the air force made practice runs on the beach before/during WW2 and the casing was from an exercise.

I havea White's Prizm 4--had it 8 years and use the hell out of it. Makee sure the digital screen is easy to read and use. Mine is waterprof sealed so I can use it in the rain etc. You get what you pay for with these. Many choices but be careful . GL
