It started with a sore throat, Michael Douglas said, as he talked candidly about his cancer last night on the Late Show with David Letterman.

"It had been bothering me for a while. ... In early summer, I had a really sore throat, early in the summer, and I actually went through a litany of doctors and tests and they didn't find anything."

He said he had a great summer traveling with his family, and he came back, went to the doctor again and "a guy said, 'Aaaah,' and he said, 'Let me just take a little clip of that.' And this all happened within three weeks, and got a biopsy and they analyzed it ? it's a stage 4, which is intense, and so they've got to go at it?"

Letterman asked, "Now when you said stage 4, I heard someone gasp. Now, is stage 4 where you want to be or where you not want to be?" Douglas said, "Um, no. No, you like to be down at stage 1?but it has not ? the big thing you're always worried about is it spreading, so I am head and neck. I am above the neck, so nothing's gone down, and the expectations are good?"

The star, who looked and sounded upbeat, has just finished his first week of eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, he said. Letterman could not believe he had already begun treatment, saying, "I mean, you've never looked better to me and this proves that you're a tough guy, for God's sakes," a comment that got a huge cheer from the audience. Douglas said, "Let's just say I'm pretty lit up ? I'm pretty lit up right now."

The actor continued, saying his throat is "sore. It hurts a lot. It comes in waves, David. My heart goes out to all the families and all the supporters and now I understand it."

Letterman asked Douglas if he had ever smoked, and Douglas said he smoked and drank and "this particular type of cancer is caused by alcohol and drinking."

Letterman ended the interview by asking Douglas, "Wow, boy, I feel like I want to do something for you. Can I do something for you?"

"Ahh, give me a hug," Douglas replied, and the two gave each other a big hug as the audience gave a standing ovation.

He's a tough nut!

I've seen 2 guys go through what he has coming and his attitude will change. That radiation on the throat will put anybody to their knees. I wish him the best. He has a great attitude about it, that's for sure.

Both guys I know that had it survived and beat it. They were able to talk but their throat was so sore it was hard and eating was nearly impossible.

Ctownguy is one and my father in law is the other. Hopefully MD fairs out as well as my 2 buddy's did.

Yea I did go thru this and it was hell.

After the first week it was still not bad, still eating and driving myself to radiation treatments, but it didn't take long for me to go downhill from there which MD alluded to in his interview.

He knows it will get worse but I don't think he can realize how bad it can get.

It's amazing how similar his and mine are well mine was. Located at the base of the tongue and how long it took doctors to diagnose it, mine also took months. The only difference is mine was Stage 2 his Stage 4 and I have heard the radiation treatments are more precise now so he might not have has much tissue around the tumor damaged or destroyed as when I went thru it. For his sake I hope this is true.

For me it's all good so far 3 and half years cancer free. I had great support from family and friends and that is what is needed and I'm sure he will have that also.

I can tell you this, Jack was one of those friends that really cared about how I was doing and keep in touch and called even when it was hard for me to talk. I will never forget that.

Yeah, it didn't sound good at all when Douglas was talking about. The one thing I found encouraging is that, when Dave asked him what the doctors told him about his prognosis, he said they gave him an 80% chance to pull through.

Ah shit, I just realized there was a video embedded in the post. He probably mentions that in the video, huh?

You just don,t know when something is going to bite you. Men we have to live each day like theres no tomorrow. For sure for our loved ones and good friends. Good Luck to every one. I can,t believe vwhat I was told once before one of our cancer fund raiser. THis was 16 years ago. This little Gal said 70% of the people we would call family and friends would have cancer. Not all will be the worst type of it and will not die from it. But still 70%. In my case she dam close. So Far. Glad to see ctownguy is winning.
