LEADING OFF: Ohtani back at DH, Chisox try again at home
April 11, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BACK IN THE BOX

Shohei Ohtani is expected back in the starting lineup for the first time since taking a perfect game into the seventh inning against Oakland on Sunday. The two-way Japanese star has homered in his last three games as a designated hitter for the Angels, the spot he'll likely fill at Texas. Ohtani didn't play Monday and grounded out as a pinch hitter Tuesday night against Bartolo Colon as Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia sticks to his plan of carefully monitoring the newcomer's workload. Ohtani's next turn on the mound will be Sunday at Kansas City.

HOME IMPROVEMENT?

The White Sox will try to avoid the worst home start in franchise history when James Shields faces his former Tampa Bay teammates. Chicago is 0-5 at Guaranteed Rate Field, matching its skid at Comiskey Park to begin the 1975 season. A charter member of the American League, the White Sox have never lost their first six home games.

GLOVE GUYS

The Boston Red Sox haven't made an error this season. Gold Glove outfielder Mookie Betts and his teammates are flawless in the field through 10 games, winning the last nine in a row. Milwaukee, meanwhile, made 15 errors in its first 11 games.

FINALLY, ALL FIVE

Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler will make his first start of the year at Miami as the last piece of a rotation expected to be one of baseball's best. This will be the first time Wheeler, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey and Steven Matz have made successive starts. The quintet has been the Mets' dream rotation since 2015, but for two seasons they were never all healthy at the same time. ''It's an awesome rotation,'' Wheeler said. ''It speaks for itself. I'm just happy to be a part of it. Hopefully I can stay here.''

NO RIZZO

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has been put on the 10-day disabled list because of tightness in his lower back. The slugger, who's had exactly 32 home runs and 109 RBIs in each of the last two years, hasn't played since last Thursday. The Cubs made the move Tuesday and manager Joe Maddon put Ben Zobrist at first in an 8-5 loss to Pittsburgh.

Books adjust red-hot Mets
April 11, 2018

New York Mets Riding Hot Start

It?s been long argued that the best way to bet on baseball is to track starting pitchers. That?s all fine and all, but sometimes that causes bettors to miss the hot streakers. Right now the only team that really fits that bill is the New York Mets, a team that was a long +2000 World Series favorite in the preseason.

The Red Sox, Angels and Astros are all off to great starts as well but nobody expected to see a surge out of the Mets like this. Right now they?re a handsome +950 on the season above the moneyline. There?s nobody even remotely close to them.

Feasting on the St. Louis Cardinals and the always hapless Phillies helped get them cracking out of the gates, but they were favored in virtually all of those matchups. What was more impressive was their grilling of the Washington Nationals, who they stomped by a combined score of 17-7 over three games. A lot of that was built over a decimation of Stephen Strasburg, who gave up 5 hits and 4 earned runs in 6.0 innings before giving way to his bullpen which handedly let him down even further.

Upcoming Schedule for NY Mets
at Miami (April 11)
vs. Milwaukee (April 13-15)
vs. Washington (April 16-18)

The New York Mets are gleefully rolling in runs at a high rate and are riding a pretty unreal momentum when you consider that they?ve never been touted as a great offensive team. Aside from the occasional night that Noah Syndergaard takes the mound, the Mets are virtually off the radar. Not even Matt Harvey moves the needle for baseball bettors these days.

Hot starts from unexpected sources are very tough to measure, but the Mets are already seeing dividends. Their World Series odds have been reduced to +1300, and they?re now being given a 34-percent shot at winning the division according to FanGraphs, who have also elevated their win total to 88. Most of us all want to see Washington?s reign of terror in the pathetic NL East come to a rightful end, and the Mets are exactly the type of team that can get it done.

One of the big keys to keeping momentum going is ensuring that the offence keeps scoring, and that?s just not possible given how the order is structured. However, Jeurys Familia has been absolutely sensational as a closer and just picked up his sixth save of the season.

Syndegaard and Jacob deGrom are going to be doing all the heavy lifting as they?ve started six games already and the most important tactical element is escaping Matt Harvey games as slippery as possible. He has not looked good, though I don?t mean to pick on him by any means. But he?s a weakness and the offence has fortunately averaged 5.1 runs per game while covering for him.

There?s nothing clinical about the Mets, and you know this because they?re average in home runs with 11 so far on the season, while ranking near the bottom of the barrel in terms of stolen bases. They?ve also piled up a whopping 8 errors, which is the 27th worst mark in the majors. In other words, this meteoric rise isn?t sustainable.

But when that iron is hot, strike it with everything you?ve got. The return date at home against Washington is where I anticipate things to get dicey for the Mets but they?re doing the one thing that a midway team can do early on ? pick up lots of early wins to insulate themselves for a cold spell in the summer.

It?s always a simple thing to target the smart pitching matchups and what not, but every spring there?s a hammer fisted underdog who over performs while people back away in disbelief. This streak will end and the win-loss will correct. Baseball is cruel like that.

That isn?t the case for now, which means bet away on the New York Mets. I did not think I would write that sentence this season.

Rockies, Padres brawl, 5 ejected as Colorado wins 6-4
April 11, 2018

DENVER (AP) Rockies star Nolan Arenado charged the mound after a fastball from Luis Perdomo sailed behind him, setting off a brawl that resulted in five ejections during Colorado's 6-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

Perdomo flung his glove at the rushing Arenado and missed. The big-hitting Arenado then threw a couple of punches at the backpedaling Perdomo but didn't land anything squarely.

Arenado, Rockies starter German Marquez and Colorado outfielder Gerardo Parra were ejected along with Perdomo and Padres catcher A.J. Ellis.

Arenado's reaction in the third woke up the slumbering Colorado bats, with the Rockies scoring five times in the inning to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Tony Wolters hit a bases-loaded, two-run single that center fielder Franchy Cordero misplayed to allow another run to score.

Antonio Senzatela (1-1) won, and Wade Davis pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Buddy Baumann (0-1) was the loser.

BRAVES 5, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Peter Bourjos drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the 12th inning off Ryan Madson (0-1).

Braves starter Brandon McCarthy left after five innings with what Atlanta said was a subluxation of his non-throwing shoulder, which usually refers to a partial dislocation. He spent more than a month on the disabled list last season after dislocating his left shoulder with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rookie Shane Carle (2-1) gave up Howie Kendrick's tying double in the 11th.

TWINS 9, ASTROS 8

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Max Kepler hit his second home run of the game, connecting for a solo drive with two outs in the bottom off Brad Peacock (1-1) as Minnesota rebounded after wasting an 8-1 lead.

Lance McCullers Jr. allowed a career-high eight runs in 3 2/3 innings for the Astros. He gave up seven hits, tied a career high with six walks and struck out six.

Houston's Alex Bregman had a career-high four hits, including his first homer of the season.

Down 8-6, the Astros loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Fernando Rodney (1-1). George Springer grounded into an RBI forceout, and the tying run scored when Dozier threw wide to first trying for a double play.

BREWERS 3, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Matt Albers got his first save for Milwaukee, retiring Kolten Wong and Dexter Fowler to strand a pair of runners.

Milwaukee built a 3-0 lead on home runs by Hernaz Perez in the second and Eric Thames in the third followed by Jonathan Villar's RBI groundout in the fifth.

Junior Guerra (1-0) allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first start this season. Adam Wainwright (0-2) gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

WHITE SOX 2, RAYS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Davidson hit a two-run homer off Austin Pruitt (1-2) in the eighth inning and Chicago improved to 1-5 at home, matching its worst home start since 1975 at Comiskey Park.

Bruce Rondon (1-0) retired the side in the eighth, and Nate Jones finished for his first save.

MARINERS 4, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kyle Seager hit a go-ahead homer with two outs in the eighth off Justin Grimm (0-1).

James Paxton matched a career-best with 10 strikeouts over six sharp innings before turning it over to his bullpen. Nick Vincent (1-0) worked a perfect seventh, and Edwin Diaz got three outs for his fourth save.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt and John Ryan Murphy hit home runs and Arizona won its fourth straight series to start a season for the first time since beginning play in 1998.

Fernando Salas (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning in relief of starter Robbie Ray. Andrew Suarez (0-1) lost in his big league debut, allowing four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Rangers' Andrus has broken elbow after getting hit vs Angels
April 12, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus broke his right elbow when he was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of the Rangers' 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

Texas manager Jeff Banister said after the game that a preliminary X-ray revealed a fracture, and that Andrus would be evaluated further.

Andrus was hit by a fastball from hard-throwing reliever Keynan Middleton. He immediately grabbed at his right arm and fell to the ground, appearing to be in significant pain.

The Rangers have lost four straight and became the first team in the majors with 10 losses.

Andrus is batting .327 with two homers and five RBIs from the third spot in Texas' order.

Yankees, Red Sox fight at Fenway after New York player hit
April 11, 2018

BOSTON (AP) New York Yankees designated hitter Tyler Austin rushed the mound after being hit by a pitch from Boston Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly, and both players began punching away in a bench-clearing brawl Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

The bitter rivals tangled in the seventh inning, adding another chapter to a long history that has included some memorable brawls.

The benches cleared briefly in the third after Austin's spikes clipped Brock Holt's leg on a slide into second base. Holt took issue with the contact and they exchanged words before being separated.

Then with the Yankees leading 10-6, Kelly nearly hit Austin and then caught him on the side with a 2-1 pitch clocked at 98 mph. Austin slammed his bat on the plate, threw it down and took four steps toward the mound while hollering. Kelly waved Austin at him, and things quickly escalated.

The scuffle spilled across the field before it broke up in front of the Boston dugout on the first base side, with Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton pushing the pile. Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames used both hands to shove Austin all the way across the infield toward the New York dugout.

Austin, Kelly and Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin were ejected.

It was the second bench-clearing brawl of the day in the majors. Colorado star Nolan Arenado charged the mound after being a pitch from San Diego's Luis Perdomo threw a pitch behind him.

New York and Boston have a history of furious fights.

Thurman Munson collided with catcher Carlton Fisk in 1973 after Gene Michael missed a bunt attempt. Three years later, Lou Piniella bowled into Fisk at the plate, and Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee separated a shoulder in the ensuing fighting.

After Roger Clemens threw a pitch under Manny Ramirez's chin during the 2003 AL Championship Series, Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer charged Pedro Martinez, who hit Karim Garcia with a pitch earlier. Martinez picked up Zimmer and threw him to the ground.

A year later, Boston's Bronson Arroyo hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch, A-Rod shouted at the pitcher, and Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek punched Rodriguez in the face, setting off a scuffle.

Price pulled from start vs Yankees with tingling in hand
April 11, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Red Sox left-hander David Price has been pulled from a start against the New York Yankees after experiencing a tingling sensation in his left hand.

The team said during Wednesday's game that he will be evaluated further.

Price pitched one inning, giving up four runs and three hits, including a home run to Gary Sanchez. Price was shaking his hand during the inning.

It was the shortest start of Price's career. His previous low came in his second major league season with Tampa Bay, when he was pulled after 1 1/3 innings against the Rangers on July 4, 2009.

Price entered having surrendered no runs and seven hits in 14 innings during his first two starts this season.

Marlins' Garcia pulled after 6 with no-hitter against Mets
April 11, 2018

MIAMI (AP) Miami Marlins left-hander Jarlin Garcia was taken out after allowing no hits in six innings against the New York Mets.

The Marlins led 1-0, and Garcia threw 77 pitches in his first major league start. He walked two and struck out three against a Mets team off to the best start in franchise history at 9-1.

He was replaced by Drew Steckenrider, who gave up Todd Frazier's single with two outs in the seventh.

Garcia, 25, broke into the majors with Miami a year ago. His first start came after 72 games as a reliever, including 68 last year, when he had an ERA of 4.73.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly pulled Wei-Yin Chen after seven hitless innings and 100 pitches against Seattle last April 18 and Adam Conley after 7 2/3 hitless innings and 116 pitches verses Milwaukee on April 29, 2016.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the RBC Heritage Golf tournament this week:

12-1? Paul Casey

18-1? Matt Kuchar

25-1? Hatton, Kisner, Leishman, Simpson, Smith

33-1? Cantlay, Harman, List, Molinari, Poulter

40-1? Grillo, Hoffman, Na

50-1? Chappell, ZJohnson, Schniederjans, Moore

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) Minnesota 112, Denver 106 OT? Timberwolves survive this game in OT, snap Denver?s 6-game winning streak and make the playoffs for first time in 15 years.

12) Lot of angry baseball players Wednesday; fisticuffs in Denver and Boston. Awful early in the season for division rivals to be going at it, but thats what happened. Nolan Arenado wound up throwing punches and Tyler Austin looked like a guy in the WWE when he charged the mound at Fenway Park. Too cold for fisticuffs- you can break a bone punching a guy.

Five players got tossed in Denver, three in Boston. These teams have a lot of games against each other the rest of the season. Will be interesting to see if the hostilities carry over.

11) Trayce Thompson played CF for the A?s last night; he robbed former Dodger teammate Yasiel Puig of a home run with a leaping catch in front of the fence. Puig tipped his cap to Thompson as he jogged back to the dugout. Thompson hit 13 homers in half a season for the Dodgers two years ago? he is an intriguing prospect for Oakland.

10) SI.com?s Albert Breer touted the Ravens as a possible landing spot for Louisville QB Lamar Jackson; Joe Flacco is 33 and the Ravens missed the playoffs the last three years.

What the Ravens really need is a new offensive coordinator; Marty Mornhinweg is hideous, but for some reason, they stick with him. 31 of 64 NFL coordinator jobs changed hands this winter, but this guy keeps his job. Baffling.

9) NFL announced the 2018 preseason schedule Wednesday, which I don?t care about except that it means the regular season schedule announcement is only a week away.

Bears-Ravens is the Hall of Fame Game in Canton on August 2.

8) Brad Stevens is a damn good coach; Celtics went over their 53.5 win total for this season, despite losing Kyrie Irving for 22 games and Gordon Hayward playing five minutes the whole freakin? season.

7) 76ers 130, Bucks 95? Philly won its last 16 games as they head into the playoffs. Happy for coach Brett Brown, who endured a lot of BS and losing on his way to this point in his career.

6) Knicks fired coach Jeff Hornacek after they got back to New York Wednesday night; they really need to fire their owner, but that?s not happening. Knicks lost 50+ games the last four seasons, which obviously ain?t good.

Former Cleveland coach David Blatt is listed as a possible replacement.

5) 2020 All-Star Game will be in Dodger Stadium; last time they had the mid-summer classic in LA was in 1980. Dodger Stadium is now the third-oldest stadium in the big leagues.

From 1962-65, before Anaheim Stadium was built, the Angels also played in Dodger Stadium.

4) Twins 9, Astros 8? Minnesota led 8-1 but the Astros rallied to tie this game, before Max Kepler ended things with a a walk-off HR, his second tater of the day.

3) Baseball injury stuff:
? Mets lose catcher Travis d?Arnaud with a torn UCL
? Rangers? SS Elvis Andrus broke his elbow when he got hit by a pitch.
? Braves? P Brandon McCarthy?s left shoulder appeared to pop out of joint as he covered first base in a game in Washington. The trainer popped the shoulder back in place? the out ended the 5th inning, but McCarthy didn?t return to the game. Weird injury.

2) First round NBA playoff series:
East: Celtics-Bucks, 76ers-Heat, Cavaliers-Pacers, Raptors-Wizards
West: Warriors-Spurs, Blazers-Pelicans, Thunder-Jazz, Rockets-Wolves

1) Only in today?s crazy world would 50Cent and MSNBC?s Ari Melber be on a Twitter video together talking about what happens if the feds charge you with a crime. Thats what popped up on my timeline today.

Say Defendant A gets convicted of a crime and gets sentenced to 10 years in jail; according to 50Cent, Defendant A would serve 85% of that time, or 8.5 years. If you got nailed for 30 years, that puts you behind bars for 25.5 years, assuming time off for good behavior.

Something to think about when you watch the news these days.

LEADING OFF: Yankees-Red Sox calm? Arenado awaits decision
April 12, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

FENWAY FISTICUFFS

The Yankees and Red Sox meet in the series finale, a day after their Beantown Brawl. Are the longtime rivals done tangling?

''I think it's probably over with,'' New York manager Aaron Boone said. ''Hopefully put this to bed.''

A spikes-first slide by Tyler Austin into Boston shortstop Brock Holt raised the tension level at Fenway Park. Four innings later, the Red Sox retaliated when Joe Kelly hit Austin with a fastball.

''It's Yankees-Red Sox. That's what everybody wants. That's what they got,'' Boston starter David Price said.

NO MORE NOLAN?

Rockies slugger Nolan Arenado is certain to get suspended soon after charging the mound and trying to punch Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo. The All-Star third baseman went wild after a fastball buzzed behind him, and came out swinging. None of his punches landed squarely Wednesday at Coors Field, and that could spare him some additional games when penalties are announced. The teams next meet April 23, again in Colorado.

CATCHING A BREAK, MAYBE

The catcher-thin Mets will see how Kevin Plawecki is feeling. He was hit by a pitch in the left hand Wednesday and X-rays were negative, but could miss time. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud went on the disabled list earlier in the day with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and surgery is possible. Tomas Nido was recalled from Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets have won eight in a row and have the best record in the majors at 10-1 heading into Friday night's series opener at home against Milwaukee.

THEY'RE SHORT

The Texas Rangers will find out how long shortstop Elvis Andrus will be sidelined with a broken right elbow. He was hit by a pitch from hard-throwing Angels reliever Keynan Middleton on Wednesday night and is likely headed to the disabled list for the first time in his career.

''Listen, you don't replace guys like this. It's such a huge part of the lineup and on the field defensively,'' Rangers manager Jeff Banister said of Andrus, who at 29 is in his 10th season as their starting shortstop.

Jose Martinez drives in 6 runs as Cards pound Reds
April 12, 2018

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit a bases-loaded triple in Los Angeles' five-run seventh inning, helping the Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

Ian Kinsler homered on his first swing in his return to the Angels' lineup, and Nick Tropeano (1-0) pitched shutout ball into the seventh for his first major league win since 2016.

Los Angeles has won eight of nine.

Ohtani drove a 1-2 pitch from Brandon Maurer to right-center, scoring Kole Calhoun, Andrelton Simmons and Luis Valbuena. The Royals walked Ohtani intentionally in the sixth with first base open and Simmons on second.

Ohtani is tied with Mike Trout for the Angels' lead with 11 RBIs in 26 at-bats. Trout went 3 for 4 with his fifth home run.

Kinsler led off the game with a home run for the 47th time in his career, driving a 1-0 pitch from Ian Kennedy (1-1) out to left. Kinsler missed the previous 11 games with an adductor strain.

RED SOX 6, YANKEES 3

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched seven scoreless innings and Mookie Betts drove in two runs, leading Boston to the victory.

Porcello (3-0) stayed in after a 45-minute rain delay and was working on a no-hitter before Aaron Judge's leadoff double in the seventh. The 2016 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked none in his third straight win to begin the year.

Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland each had two hits and drove in a run. Craig Kimbrel got three outs for his fourth save.

Yankees starter Sonny Gray (1-1) was pulled after a leadoff single by Moreland in the fourth. It was the seventh hit allowed by Gray, who also threw three wild pitches and hit a batter. He was charged with six runs and seven hits.

CARDINALS 13, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Martinez drove in six runs and Yadier Molina homered in his return from a one-game suspension, powering St. Louis to a victory that left Cincinnati mired in its worst start since 1955.

The Cardinals homered a season-high four times while piling up a season high in runs. The Reds helped by walking 11 batters, three of them with the bases loaded.

The Reds fell to 2-10, the worst record in the majors and their worst start since an identical mark in 1955.

Infielder Cliff Pennington pitched the ninth for Cincinnati and gave up a pair of walks and Martinez's second RBI single of the game.

Paul DeJong's solo shot deep into the upper deck in center off Austin Brice (0-2) snapped a 4-4 tie in the sixth. Martinez and Molina hit back-to-back drives in the seventh, when St. Louis put it away with seven runs.

Michael Wacha (2-1) went five innings and extended his streak of beating Cincinnati.

TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Joe Mauer reached 2,000 career hits, Jose Berrios struck out 11 in seven innings and Minnesota earned its third straight win.

Mauer had two hits and three RBIs.

Berrios (2-1) tied a career high with 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits for the second time in three starts this season. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA in five starts against Chicago.

Lucas Giolito (0-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the White Sox, giving up four runs, three earned, and five hits with five walks. He struck out three.

PIRATES 6, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Gregory Polanco homered twice to help back a third straight solid start by Trevor Williams, and Pittsburgh pulled away from Chicago.

Francisco Cervelli lined a three-run shot in the seventh off Justin Wilson as Pittsburgh scored four times in the inning to break open a tight game. Adam Frazier also went deep for Pittsburgh, which improved to 9-3.

Kyle Schwarber homered, doubled and singled for three of the Cubs' seven hits. Chicago's Ian Happ had his first two-hit game this season.

Williams (3-0) was a bit better than Kyle Hendricks (0-1) in what began as a pitchers' duel following Chicago's 13-5 rout of Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Williams yielded one run and four hits through six innings. Hendricks allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.

ROCKIES 5, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - DJ LeMahieu hit two home runs and drove in a career-high four runs, powering Colorado to the victory.

Chad Bettis (2-0) allowed one run and three hits over seven innings as Colorado took the opener of a four-game series.

LeMahieu's four-hit game matched a career high. He provided most of the offense, starting with the game's first at-bat.

The second baseman sent Washington starter Gio Gonzalez's third pitch into the Colorado bullpen in left.

LeMahieu added an RBI double in the second off Gonzalez (1-1). In the sixth, he smacked a two-run homer to center off Matt Grace to make it 5-1.

INDIANS 9, TIGERS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer and drove in three runs, helping Cleveland to its 11th consecutive victory against the Tigers.

The Indians completed a four-game series sweep and improved to 31-10 against their AL Central rival since 2016. Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer, and Trevor Bauer (1-1) struck out seven while pitching seven innings of two-run ball.

Lindor, who entered the night batting .184 with one RBI, hit his fourth career leadoff homer off Michael Fulmer (1-2). He added a two-run double in the second and also scored three of Cleveland's season-high nine runs.

Jason Kipnis and Bradley Zimmer each had three hits for the Indians. Kipnis added two RBIs and Zimmer robbed Dixon Machado of an extra-base hit with a diving catch in the seventh.

GIANTS 7, PADRES 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Stratton and Derek Law combined on a one-hitter, and Hunter Pence's broken-bat, two-run bloop single highlighted a three-run first inning for San Francisco.

Stratton (1-1) kept the Padres mostly off the bases through seven innings. He allowed their only hit, a one-out single in the third by pitcher Clayton Richard, who was hitting for starter Bryan Mitchell (0-2). Richard was doubled off after Franchy Cordero lined out to shortstop.

Stratton struck out four, walked three and retired his final eight batters. The only time a runner got into scoring position against him was when he walked Freddy Galvis and Carlos Asuaje with one out in the fifth.

Law, recalled from Triple-A Sacramento before the game, threw two perfect innings.

Padres vow not to get pushed around after brawl with Rockies
April 12, 2018

SAN DIEGO (AP) Showing some fight seems to be a good thing for the rebuilding San Diego Padres.

While awaiting word on punishment from MLB for their brawl Wednesday with the Colorado Rockies, the Padres vowed not to get pushed around by anyone.

After five Padres batters were hit in six games against the Rockies this season, including Manuel Margot taking a fastball to the ribs Tuesday night and going on the disabled list, the Padres felt enough was enough.

Luis Perdomo threw a pitch behind Nolan Arenado in the third inning Wednesday and the All-Star rushed the mound, setting off a brawl that led to five ejections, including Perdomo, Arenado and San Diego catcher A.J. Ellis.

It also led to a sense of camaraderie for the Padres, who were labeled as soft by some last year when they chose not to retaliate after Anthony Rizzo of the Chicago Cubs slammed into Austin Hedges at the plate last year, sidelining the catcher for a few games. MLB determined that Rizzo violated the home plate collision rule, but didn't punish him.

Manager Andy Green wouldn't say if someone called for Perdomo's purpose pitch or if the situation simply hit critical mass.

''We'll keep stuff like that in house. That's kind of how that stuff should be handled.''

Hedges replaced Ellis Wednesday.

''Obviously anytime a thing like that happens it brings your team together a little bit,'' Hedges said Thursday before the Padres opened a series against San Francisco. ''We definitely want to get the impression out there that we're not going to let teams run all over us. We're going to go out there and no matter who you are, we're going to be competing out there to win a ballgame no matter what it takes.

''It kind of brings your team together and that's what it did for us.''

Green said there was good and bad that came from the brawl, which sparked the Rockies to a 6-4 win.

''We got knocked off kilter yesterday, honestly,'' Green said. ''We didn't play a good half inning. We came back and played a very good rest of the ballgame ... but it took us a half inning and that half inning was five runs. You've got to be able to handle those emotions.

''It was a great experience for a young club to go through,'' Green added. ''You go through an experience like that and you understand the emotions that ensue and you understand what you've got to control. But for me I think those things are valuable to build a contender. As you go through emotions like that you learn how to handle them.''

Eric Hosmer, who joined the Padres as a free agent from the Kansas City Royals, said it was a matter of players policing the situation.

''We handled it on the field, it was done and we finished the game and moved on from it,'' he said. ''But I do think teams can become stronger from it. You're on a team, you expect to have everybody's back. When you go through something like that and see everybody having your back and seeing everybody coming together, it reassures you that it's true.''

Hosmer said Perdomo's pitch sent a message.

''We don't want to feel intimidated by anybody and I'm sure other teams don't want to feel intimidated by us. It's a bunch of competitors and you're competing at the highest level you can possibly compete on and there are going to be some times where tensions are raised a little bit and it's all part of baseball. That's the reason a lot of us are in this position, because of the intensity and competitiveness we all have.

''We all realize we're all competing at a high level out there. Guys got fired up and it was done and it was over after that.''

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe was hit on the hand in the second inning, after Colorado's Trevor Story was plunked in the first.

Renfroe said his hand was bruised but otherwise fine.

He also thinks things were settled Wednesday.

''I think everything's behind. I think everybody's good with it,'' he said. ''It's hard baseball. We're all big boys here. We can get over it and put things aside, and obviously we're here to play baseball.''

The Padres took two of three from the Rockies after losing three of four to them in San Diego last week.

The Padres return to Colorado for a three-game series April 23-25.
