Cubs delay home opener vs. Pirates because of snow
April 9, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Cubs have pushed back the scheduled start time for their home opener because of a steady snowfall over Wrigley Field.

The Cubs' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates was scheduled to begin at 1:20 p.m. Monday, but the team is now hoping to start at 2:20 p.m.

Chicago is the last major league team to hold its home opener. There is an off day in the series on Tuesday, so the game could be pushed back a day.

LEADING OFF: Cubs play home opener against Pirates
April 9, 2018

A look at what's happening all around baseball today:

AT LAST

Weather-permitting, the Chicago Cubs finally get to play their home opener when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field. The Cubs closed out a 5-4 trip with a 3-0 win at Milwaukee on Sunday. It was the franchise's longest road trip to open the season since a 12-game jaunt in 1899. There is a chance for snow for the team's return to Chicago, and first baseman Anthony Rizzo also is questionable. The slugger has been sidelined by back tightness.

HEALTH CONCERNS

The Boston Red Sox should know more about Xander Bogaerts after the shortstop injured his left ankle in the seventh inning of Sunday's 8-7 victory over Tampa Bay. Bogaerts got hurt while sliding down into the Tampa Bay dugout. He is hitting .368 (14 of 38) this season with two homers and nine RBIs. Boston has won eight in a row heading into Tuesday's series opener against the New York Yankees. Brock Holt could fill in if Bogaerts misses any time.

CY YOUNGS

Reigning Cy Young Award winners Corey Kluber and Max Scherzer take the mound. Kluber goes for his first win of the year when the Cleveland Indians face the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a four-game series. Scherzer gets the ball for the Washington Nationals at home against the Atlanta Braves. Scherzer took the loss in his previous start against Atlanta when he yielded five runs, two earned, in five innings in a 7-1 setback on Wednesday.

NOAH VS. THE FISH

New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard looks to continue his dominance of the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game set. The 25-year-old Syndergaard is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins. He is coming off a no-decision against Philadelphia on Wednesday when he gave up two runs and four hits in four innings in New York's 4-2 win.

AILING REDS

The Cincinnati Reds could turn to Cliff Pennington or Phil Gosselin at third after Eugenio Suarez broke his right thumb when he was hit by a pitch during Sunday's 5-0 loss at Pittsburgh. Suarez signed a $66 million, seven-year contract in March. The 26-year-old has been one of the few bright spots in Cincinnati's tough start. He hit a three-run home run to complete a comeback win over the Pirates on Saturday night.

Mets, not Yankees, off to sparkling start in New York
April 9, 2018

For one week at least, the angst in New York was on the American League side.

While the Mets swept a pair of division rivals, the Yankees wrapped up their first homestand by losing three of four to Baltimore, with a couple extra-inning games going against them. The slugging tandem of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge has five home runs on the young season, but Stanton already has 20 strikeouts in 10 games and has heard boos from his new home crowd in the Bronx.

After reaching the AL Championship Series last year and adding Stanton, the Yankees came into this season with high expectations, and it will take more than a few whiffs early in the season to change that. The Mets, on the other hand, finished 27 games out of first place in 2017, and the impressive rotation they'd assembled was struggling to stay healthy.

Now the Mets are 7-1 after sweeping a two-game series with Philadelphia and taking three in a row at Washington . Only Boston (8-1) has a better record. Noah Syndergaard is back after being limited to 30 1/3 innings last year because of a torn lat muscle, and even Matt Harvey is showing signs of being a contributor after two ineffective, injury-plagued seasons.

Across town, it's the Yankees who are dealing with some early health problems. Gary Sanchez has missed some time with a leg issue, and CC Sabathia is on the disabled list. Next up is a three-game series at Fenway Park against the first-place Red Sox, who are threatening to open up a bit of distance on New York.

Some other developments from around the majors:

PHENOM

It's still very, very early, but so far Shohei Ohtani is testing the upper limits of what appeared possible when the two-way star arrived from Japan. Ohtani allowed one hit in seven shutout innings Sunday for the Los Angeles Angels against Oakland. He's won both his starts on the mound, and in between, he homered in three consecutive games.

He's batting .389 on the season, and opponents are hitting .093 off him.

EARLY LEAD

The Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen headlining their pitching staff, but division rival Arizona finished right behind Los Angeles in ERA last season, and the Diamondbacks are already four games up on the Dodgers in the NL West. Patrick Corbin rolled through his first two starts for Arizona, striking out 20 with only two walks. With Corbin, Zack Greinke, Robbie Ray, Zack Godley and Taijuan Walker, the Diamondbacks have plenty of pitching depth.

LINE OF THE WEEK

Ohtani's outing Sunday was impressive, and San Diego rookie Christian Villanueva's three-homer game Tuesday night turned heads. But the honor goes to a familiar star in a new uniform: Andrew McCutchen of the Giants had a career-high six hits Saturday night, the last of which was a three-run homer in the 14th inning that gave San Francisco a 7-5 victory over the Dodgers.

HIGHLIGHT REEL

Edwin Encarnacion, a 35-year-old designated hitter with nine career triples, was not a likely candidate for an inside-the-park home run, but the Cleveland slugger hit one Monday night against the Angels. Encarnacion's drive down the line hit the wall just below the foul pole, then bounced and rolled along the edge of the warning track. Left fielder Justin Upton did not initially realize the ball was still in play, and by the time he retrieved it, Encarnacion was well on his way to scoring.

Honorable mention to Houston's Carlos Correa, who hit an inside-the-park homer of his own Tuesday night against Baltimore. Correa's shot bounced off the wall in left-center, where two outfielders had converged. The ball bounced away from both of them and back toward center field.

Scherzer steals, throws 5th shutout, Nats top Braves 2-0
April 10, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Max Scherzer stole the first base of his professional career and allowed only two singles in his fifth big league shutout, and the Washington Nationals ended a five-game losing skid while getting back to .500 with a 2-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.

Scherzer (2-1), the winner of the past two NL Cy Young Awards, did not let the Braves push a runner beyond first base. Kurt Suzuki got a hit in the second, and Nick Markakis did in the fifth, but neither advanced.

Scherzer managed to get farther than that: He swiped second after singling off reliever Peter Moylan in the seventh.

Howie Kendrick delivered all the offense Washington needed with a two-run double.

Scherzer struck out 10 and walked none in his ninth complete game in 299 major league starts. And he needed only 102 pitches, a far more efficient outing than his previous time on the mound: He threw 110 over five innings in a 7-1 loss at Atlanta on April 4.

Julio Teheran (0-1) went six innings for the Braves, and the only damage came on Kendrick's shot that hugged the left-field line with two outs in the first inning. That brought home Anthony Rendon, who also had doubled, and Bryce Harper, who walked.

BREWERS 5, CARDINALS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - In his St. Louis debut, Greg Holland walked four batters in the 10th inning and forced home the go-ahead run.

The 32-year-old Holland, who tied for the NL lead with 41 saves for Colorado last season, was signed as a free agent on opening day. He pitched two innings at Class A before joining the Cardinals earlier in the day.

Holland (0-1) walked two batters to begin the 10th. After a sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk loaded the bases. The three-time All-Star closer then walked Orlando Arcia and was pulled.

Matt Albers (2-0) gave up the tying run in the ninth. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs, and Dexter Fowler's sacrificed fly tied it at 4.

Brewers newcomer Lorenzo Cain tripped over the foot of Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez on a play in the ninth, and both exited. Martinez bruised his right Achilles.

ROYALS 10, MARINERS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jakob Junis carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, Kansas City scored more runs than it had in its last six games combined.

Junis (2-0) hit three batters and walked two, but the quick-working right-hander did not allow a hit until Daniel Vogelbach's grounder up the middle with one out in the seventh.

Junis finished up the inning without any more trouble, running his scoreless streak to 14 innings to start the season.

After Seattle pulled starter Marco Gonzales (1-1), Mike Moustakas homered in the eighth off infielder Taylor Motter.

ASTROS 2, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out nine over seven dominant innings, and Carlos Correa had two hits and scored twice.

Verlander (2-0) was in control throughout on a chilly night with a first-pitch temperature of 35 degrees. The right-hander gave up three hits and walked one while helping the reigning World Series champions match their best 11-game start by going 9-2. Verlander improved to 11-1 in 14 games, including the playoffs, since being traded to Houston last season.

Ken Giles earned his first save of the season by getting Byron Buxton to ground out with a runner on third in the ninth.

Twins reliever Taylor Rogers (1-1) allowed a leadoff double to Correa in the sixth after coming in for starter Lance Lynn. Correa scored from third on rookie J.D. Davis' liner to left field off reliever Trevor Hildenberger.

METS 4, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Noah Syndergaard allowed one earned run in six innings and New York won its sixth consecutive game to match the best start in team history.

The winning streak is the Mets' longest since September 2016, and they improved to 8-1.

Jeurys Familia escaped a jam to pitch a scoreless ninth and earn his fifth save, most in the majors.

The announced crowd of 7,003 - most of them rooting for the Mets - was by far the smallest in the seven-season history of Marlins Park. The Marlins now announce attendance based on only tickets sold, a change from the previous ownership regime.

Syndergaard (2-0) had less than his best stuff but stranded four runners in scoring position. Four relievers combined to shut out Miami over the final three innings, lowering the team ERA to 2.25.

Adrian Gonzalez and Jay Bruce each had an RBI single off Marlins ace Jose Urena (0-2), who allowed three runs in five innings.

BLUE JAYS 7, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Steve Pearce homered in a third successive game, Josh Donaldson tacked on a ninth-inning grand slam and Toronto beat Baltimore before 7,915 fans, the lowest paid crowd in Camden Yards history.

Gametime temperature was 44 degrees, and a slight mist made the conditions even more miserable. That contributed to a dubious attendance record at the 27-year-old ballpark that had held since April 12, 2010, when 9,129 showed up for a game between the Orioles and Tampa Bay.

Pearce put Toronto up 2-0 in the third with a two-run shot off Dylan Bundy (0-1) on a 3-0 pitch. It marked the first time in his career that Pearce, who's had three separate stints with the Orioles, homered in three consecutive games.

J.A. Happ (2-1) struck out nine in six innings, allowing one run and five hits.

ANGELS 8, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Albert Pujols hit his 616th career homer, Martin Maldonado had two RBI singles along with an evasive move to score a run and Los Angeles extended its best start in more than three decades.

The Angels are 8-3 for the first time since 1987 and fourth time in franchise history. Shohei Ohtani, the rookie two-way standout who was chosen AL Player of the Week, didn't play a day after striking out 12 in seven scoreless innings against Oakland.

Jose Alvarez (1-0) retired the only two batters he faced after Angels starter Garrett Richards walked the bases loaded with one out in the fifth. Richards also struck out six in his 4 1-3 innings.

Doug Fister (1-2) struck out five with no walks while allowing three runs in his five innings.

INDIANS 2, TIGERS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber (1-1) struck out 13, pitching two-hit ball for eight innings and leading Cleveland in snow flurries.

The temperature at first pitch was 33 degrees, one above Progressive Field's record low set Sunday. There were flurries before the game and again in the seventh inning, resulted in a crowd of 9,843.

Andrew Miller worked the ninth for his first save of the season, getting Miguel Cabrera on a game-ending double play.

Bradley Zimmer hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Francisco Liriano (1-1) as Cleveland's offense struggled again but used the long ball to win for the second straight day.

PHILLIES 6, REDS 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Nick Williams hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning to lift Philadelphia.

Scott Kingery homered for the first time in his career, and Rhys Hoskins also went deep for the Phillies.

Tucker Barnhart hit a two-run homer for the Reds.

Williams drove one deep into the right-center field seats off Kevin Quackenbush (0-1) for his first career pinch-hit homer. Luis Garcia (1-1) tossed a scoreless inning in relief and Hector Neris finished for his first save.

PADRES 7, ROCKIES 6

DENVER (AP) - Pitcher Clayton Richard homered into the second deck at Coors Field and San Diego weathered Carlos Gonzalez's disputed home run.

Richard connected for his third career homer as part of a five-run fourth inning, driving the first pitch he saw from Jon Gray (1-2) above the Rockies bullpen in right-center. Carlos Asuaje followed Richard with a home run.

Richard (1-1) allowed four runs in five innings. Brad Hand struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

Ian Desmond, Chris Iannetta and Gonzalez homered for the Rockies. Gonzalez's two-run drive came in the sixth off Jordan Lyles, pulled the Rockies within 7-6 and led to the ejection of Padres manager Andy Green.

Left fielder Cory Spangenberg made a leaping attempt at the wall and actually had the ball in his glove for an instant, even as a fan tried simultaneously to make a barehanded catch. The fan appeared to make some contact with the glove but backed his hands away as Spangenberg dropped back to the ground.

RAYS 5, WHITE SOX 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Mallex Smith matched a career high with four hits, Joey Wendle hit his first homer and Tampa Bay stopped an eight-game losing streak.

A bullpen that blew late leads in two of the three games at Boston last weekend got the job done after a shaky start by Chris Archer (1-0). Alex Colome escaped a second-and-third jam in the ninth by getting three straight groundouts, retiring Leury Garcia on a game-ending bouncer to first.

Miguel Gonzalez (0-2) gave up four runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Lovullo regrets comments that triggered brawl
April 9, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says he regrets his choice of words that set off St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and triggered a benches-clearing incident.

Lovullo came out of the dugout to argue with plate umpire Tim Timmons in St. Louis on Sunday, blaming the umpire for a called third strike he claimed was influenced by the All-Star catcher's pitch framing.

Lovullo used a profanity that set off Molina, and the manager was ejected.

''I said what I said,'' Lovullo explained Monday. ''I made a mistake with some of the wording that I chose. I think the one message that I want to say is that I respect Yady, I think he's one of the best catchers in baseball. Has been for a long time.''

Lovullo was arguing a called third strike on A.J. Pollock leading off the second innings. He had not liked a called third strike against David Peralta starting the game.

The Arizona manager said he praised Molina while using a profanity and said ''but he can't turn balls into strikes.''

Molina's version was ''he said a bad word to me and I reacted that way. He called me (it) twice. You can't allow that.''

''I know he was frustrated with what I said, and I can't blame him,'' Lovullo said. ''I was giving him more of a compliment in saying that he's very good and didn't necessarily follow through, to execute the right way of my words to tell that that's what I was thinking.''

Lovullo had not tried to reach out to Molina.

''I just want everything to settle down and go away,'' the manager said. ''I know that it's a big story. It happened, and I can see why it's a big story, I'm not trying to downplay it, I just want the dust to settle a little bit and think through it through a really clearer lens.''

Lovullo said he expects to be fined for the ejection.

'''ll deal with the consequences,'' he said.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl:

5-1? Patriots

8-1? Steelers, Eagles

10-1? Rams

12-1? Vikings, Packers

16-1? 49ers

18-1? Saints Jaguars Texans Chiefs

Quote of the Day
?It?s a fine line between who makes a team and who doesn?t in the NFL. We don?t have a minor league of professional football. Those players get a chance to continue playing even if they don?t play at the highest level and then maybe someday they play well enough to go to the highest level.?
Steve Spurrier

Tuesday?s quiz

Giancarlo Stanton was traded this past winter after hitting 59 homers last year; who is the only other player who was traded after a season where he hit 50+ home runs?

Monday?s quiz
Bill Belichick was the last coach of the old Cleveland Browns, before they moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens? he was 37-45 as coach of the Browns, with one playoff win? against the Patriots.

Sunday?s quiz
Houston Texans? coach Bill O?Brien coached Penn State?s football team, after Joe Paterno and before current coach James Franklin.

*********************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Was watching Invincible Sunday night, a movie about a 30-year bartender who tried out for the 1976 Philadelphia Eagles and wound up playing three years in the NFL. True story.

Things have changed a lot in 42 years; in training camp back then, the Eagles had six straight weeks of 2-a-day practices, and also had six preseason games.

Nowadays, teams rarely hit in practices, there are four preseason games; any coach who tried to run 2-a-days on consecutive days would probably get scolded by the league or just told he couldn?t do it.

12) ?The hockey rink is the gathering place for our people throughout Canada. You want to know what?s going on in town? Go to the rink. We?ve got no movie theater in Nipawin, no casino. We?ve got a hockey rink. That?s how so much of Canada is. That?s why this hits us so hard.?
Dan Ukrainetz, a radio announcer in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, talking about the Humboldt bus tragedy this past weekend

11) Saturday is the earliest the Atlanta Braves can bring up top prospect Ronald Acuna and keep him under contractual control for an extra year.

10) After playing in 384 games over 10 years in the G-League, 32-year old Andre Ingram finally got the call Monday; the Lakers called him up to the NBA.

Can you imagine how exciting that must be, after 10 years to finally make it to the NBA, when he had to have thought it was never going to happen? Ingram played four years at American U; good for him.

9) Cubs were supposed to open at home Monday, the last team to do so, but it snowed so they will try again today. Lot of cruddy weather so far in April.

Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo (back) is on the DL now.

8) When Masters champ Patrick Reed was 10, he stopped wearing shorts and wore long pants at tournaments in hot weather, because he knew pros had to wear long pants, and he wanted to be a pro. All the other kids were wearing shorts.

7) Reed won the Masters Sunday with 13 clubs in his bag that were made by five different manufacturers, which is very unusual for a touring pro.

6) Through Sunday, Astros, White Sox, Pirates, Diamondbacks were only four teams whose starting pitcher went 5+ innings in every game so far early in this season.

5) Eli Manning gets a $500,000 bonus for going to the Giants? ?voluntary? off-season workouts. OT Ereck Flowers was only Giant who didn?t ?volunteer? to work out Monday.

4) Last year, Evan Longoria, Logan Morrison, Steven Souza and Kevin Keirmaier all hit 20+ homers for Tampa Bay; they were all traded over the winter.

That was the first time EVER a team traded away four players in the same off-season, all of whom had hit 20+ HR?s the year before.

3) Baltimore Orioles turned a 1-2-5 double play over the weekend; pitcher to home to third, with two force plays- that is the first time the Orioles have ever done that- the last one anywhere in the major leagues was in September of 2012 by the Astros.

2) NHL trivia: Tampa Bay Lightning scored 196 goals while teams were 5-on-5 this season, the most 5-on-5 goals by any team since the 2009-10 Washington Capitals.

1? Northwestern poached Evansville?s 6-6 Ryan Taylor, who scored 21 ppg for the Purple Aces last year? he is a graduate transfer, so he will eligible to play in the fall.

LEADING OFF: Yankees-Red Sox ramp up, Ohtani could return
April 9, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

BEST OF 19

Giancarlo Stanton and J.D. Martinez get their first swings in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry when aces Luis Severino and Chris Sale start at Fenway Park in the opener of 19 games between the AL East powers. Boston has won eight in a row but is minus shortstop Xander Bogaerts, put on the 10-day disabled list because of a cracked bone in his left ankle. Stanton is still looking for his stroke - the NL MVP is hitting .167 with 20 strikeouts in 42 at-bats in his first year with New York.

SHO HIM

Shohei Ohtani could return to the lineup when the Los Angeles Angels visit Texas. The two-way star from Japan pitched perfect ball into the seventh inning Sunday, then didn't start Monday. Ohtani has homered in his last three games as a designated hitter. He's batting .389, and is 2-0 on the mound.

WRIGLEY WREADY

The Chicago Cubs try again to play their home opener, a day after a winter scene at Wrigley Field forced a snowout. The Cubs are only team in the majors that hasn't had a home game. The forecast is for clear skies and temperatures in the low 40s when Tyler Chatwood starts against Pittsburgh.

NO GUARANTEE

The White Sox are still winless at home this season. They've opened 0-4 at Guaranteed Rate Field, and haven't lost their first five home games since 1975 at Comiskey Park. Carson Fulmer starts for Chicago against Tampa Bay lefty Blake Snell.

BIG JUMP

The Orioles have promoted 2013 first-round pick Hunter Harvey from the minors to bail out a tired bullpen while they take on Toronto. The right-hander, the son of former All-Star reliever Bryan Harvey, has never pitched above Class A - he had been scheduled to start Monday for Double-A Bowie. The 23-year-old Harvey missed the 2015 season with an arm injury and had Tommy John surgery in July 2016.

Betts hits slam, Red Sox rout Yanks 14-1 for 9th win in row
April 10, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Mookie Betts hit a grand slam on a monster night, leading Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox over the New York Yankees 14-1 Tuesday for their ninth straight victory.

Betts went 4 for 4, scoring five runs and driving in four. His third career slam capped a nine-run burst in the sixth inning that turned the first matchup of the season between the AL East rivals into a rout.

Sale (1-0) allowed one run in six innings, striking out eight. Luis Severino (2-1) gave up five runs in five innings.

Aaron Judge had three hits for the Yankees, including his third home run of the season.

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton went 2 for 4. He struck out his first two times up against Sale, and has now fanned 22 times in 46 at-bats.

GIANTS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit a bases-loaded single for his second walk-off of San Francisco's homestand.

McCutchen lined the first pitch he got from Jorge De La Rosa (0-1) for a clean single into left-center, his 10th career game-ending hit. His previous walk-off was just last Saturday, when he hit a three-run homer to sink the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 14th inning.

Kelby Tomlinson walked to start the ninth against De La Rosa, who allowed Gorkys Hernandez's sacrifice before intentionally walking Austin Jackson to bring up Brandon Belt. Belt walked to load the bases for McCutchen.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a tying solo homer more than halfway up the bleachers in left-center with two outs in the ninth off Giants fill-in closer Hunter Strickland (1-0).

BLUE JAYS 2, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Aaron Sanchez lost his no-hit bid when Baltimore's Tim Beckham led off the eighth inning with a sharp grounder through the legs of third baseman Josh Donaldson, and Curtis Granderson hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth to carry Toronto.

Seeking to throw the second no-hitter in Blue Jays history - Dave Stieb did it in 1990 - Sanchez (1-1) gave up three hits in the eighth.

Granderson hit his first homer for the Blue Jays, connecting off Darren O'Day (0-1).

Roberto Osuna closed for his fifth save. He became the youngest player in major league history (23 years, 62 days) with 100 career saves.

METS 8, MARLINS 6

MIAMI (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes snapped a slump with a two-run double to break a tie in the ninth inning, giving New York the best 10-game start in franchise history.

The Mets (9-1) earned their seventh consecutive victory, their longest winning streak in two years. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a pair of solo homers for New York, which blew a three-run lead and then came from behind.

For the second night in a row, the teams drew the smallest crowd in the seven-season history of Marlins Park. Attendance was 6,516.

The score was 6-all in the ninth when Amed Rosario reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brian Anderson. Brad Ziegler (0-2) walked Michael Conforto, and Cespedes grounded a one-out double down the line just past Anderson.

Miami's Justin Bour hit his first two home runs of the season, each with a man on.

Hansel Robles (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. Jeurys Familia followed with a perfect ninth for his sixth save, most in the majors.

CARDINALS 5, BREWERS 3, 11 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Matt Carpenter hit a two-run home run with no outs in the 11th inning to lift St. Louis.

Carpenter turned around a pitch from J.J. Hoover (0-1) for the third game-ending homer of his career. It capped a night in which St. Louis rallied from one-run deficits in the ninth and 10th innings.

Domingo Santana singled in Eric Thames to put Milwaukee ahead 2-1 in the ninth inning, but Tommy Pham scored from second on a pair of wild pitches by Jacob Barnes to tie it in the bottom of the inning.

After Orlando Arcia singled in a run in the top of the 10th, Greg Garcia made it 3-3 with his own RBI single a half-inning later.

Dominic Leone (1-2) pitched a clean 11th inning before Paul DeJong set up Carpenter's winner with an infield single.

PIRATES 8, CUBS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Ivan Nova pitched seven solid innings, Francisco Cervelli hit a three-run homer and Pittsburgh ruined Chicago's home opener.

Not even the presence of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the 98-year-old chaplain of the Loyola basketball team, could help the Cubs. She threw out a ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field.

Corey Dickerson had three hits and two RBIs and Starling Marte also connected as Pittsburgh won for the fourth time in five games. The Pirates' 8-2 record is their best 10-game start since 1992.

Felipe Vazquez got four outs for his first save in a new jersey after he legally changed his surname to match that of his sister, Prescilla. He was known as Felipe Rivero, and he apologized on Twitter on Monday to fans who bought gear with his old name.

Javier Baez homered twice for the Cubs, and Willson Contreras collected three hits. Tyler Chatwood (0-2) was tagged for five runs and nine hits in five innings in his first home start since signing a $38 million, three-year contract with Chicago in the offseason.

DODGERS 4, ATHLETICS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hyun-Jin Ryu cruised through six innings of one-hit ball and Corey Seager hit one of three Dodgers homers.

Ryu (1-0) rebounded from a rocky season debut to shut down Oakland. He struck out eight and walked one, handing off to the bullpen after just 90 pitches. Ryu also walked and singled in two plate appearances.

Chris Taylor and Seager hit back-to-back homers off Sean Manaea (1-2) in the first inning, and Matt Kemp later added his first homer since returning to Los Angeles in a December trade with Atlanta.

Relievers Tony Cingrani and Ross Stripling got the ball to Kenley Jansen, who got two outs for his second save of the season.

NATIONALS 4, BRAVES 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg threw eight scoreless innings and Ryan Zimmerman had a two-run triple for Washington.

Strasburg (2-1) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight, at one point retiring 12 in a row. He didn't allow a runner past second base.

Ryan Madson allowed a two-out RBI double in the ninth to Dansby Swanson, but escaped the jam to earn his first save.

Brian Goodwin's two-out single knocked in an unearned run off starter Mike Foltynewicz (1-1) in the fourth, and the Nationals added another run in the sixth when reliever Shane Carle overthrew first on Strasburg's sacrifice attempt.

INDIANS 2, TIGERS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Roberto Perez hit a leadoff home run in the eighth inning against reliever Alex Wilson, lifting Cleveland over Detroit.

The Indians beat the Tigers for the ninth straight time.

Andrew Miller (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. Cody Allen worked the ninth for his third save.

Wilson (0-2) came in to start the eighth and quickly fell behind Perez.

ANGELS 11, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Mike Trout and Andrelton Simmons each homered, and Albert Pujols had two more hits in his push to 3,000 for Los Angeles, which is 9-3 for the first time since 1982.

Angels rookie two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth after not playing in the series opener Monday night. Ohtani will DH in the series finale Wednesday.

Trout's fourth home of the season was a 441-foot solo drive that hit high above the Angels bullpen in left-center in the second inning. Simmons led off the next inning with his first homer to make it 5-1 against Martin Perez (1-1).

Tyler Skaggs (2-0) struck out seven while allowing one run and throwing 114 pitches in five innings. The lefty allowed five hits and walked four.

PADRES 5, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Joey Lucchesi got his first major league win thanks to a go-ahead three-run homer from Hunter Renfroe in the seventh inning.

Lucchesi (1-0) shut down Colorado in his third career start. He struck out eight and allowed just two unearned runs before leaving two batters into the seventh.

Austin Hedges also homered, Jose Pirela had three hits and Brad Hand pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Renfroe hit the first pitch from reliever Brian Shaw (1-1) with two out in the seventh. It was his first homer of the season and came after a pair of two-out singles.

PHILLIES 6, REDS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola pitched eight stellar innings and Scott Kingery hit a grand slam.

Nola (1-0) gave up three hits while striking out six and walking three as Philadelphia won for the fourth time in five games. The Reds have lost three in a row.

Kingery connected with one out in the eighth off Tanner Rainey, who was making his big league debut. It was the second career homer for Kingery - he helped the Phillies beat the Reds 6-5 on Monday night by going deep.

J.P. Crawford put the Phillies ahead 2-1 in the seventh when he singled off Jared Hughes (0-1).

TWINS 4, ASTROS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jake Odorizzi grinded through six innings for his first win with Minnesota, and leadoff man Brian Dozier walked a career-high four times.

Odorizzi (1-0) struggled with control on another cold night in Minnesota but eventually settled in during his first home start since being acquired from Tampa Bay in February. He allowed a run on five walks and five hits.

Minnesota took advantage of Dallas Keuchel's control problems to scratch across three runs in the first two innings. Keuchel (0-2) gave up three runs, five hits and four walks in four innings. He struck out six and left after 101 pitches.

Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his second save.

MARINERS 8, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Felix Hernandez pitched into the sixth inning, Guillermo Heredia homered and Seattle bounced back from a blowout loss to rout Kansas City.

Hernandez (2-1), who was shelled his last time out in San Francisco, allowed three runs, six hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. His only big mistake came in the fourth, when Mike Moustakas turned on a 2-1 pitch and sent a two-run homer screaming into the right-field fountains.

Eric Skoglund (0-1) was hardly as efficient or effective. The lanky left-hander allowed five runs, six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

RAYS 6, WHITE SOX 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Blake Snell pitched one-hit ball and struck out 10 through six innings and Tampa Bay kept Chicago winless at home this season.

The White Sox dropped to 0-5 at Guaranteed Rate Field. They have never lost their first six at home in franchise history dating to 1901.

Snell (1-1) didn't allow a hit until Tyler Saladino's double in the fifth.

Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer off Rays closer Alex Colome, capping a four-run rally in the ninth. Colome held on for his third save in five chances.

Carson Fulmer (0-1) struggled with his control, allowing four runs over 4 2/3 innings while walking six and hitting two batters.

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) Rough start to the season for the Giants; Johnny Cueto (ankle) goes on the DL, joining Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija- those are San Francisco?s three best pitchers.

12) Rockets? PG Chris Paul bought an ownership stake in the Carolina League?s Winston-Salem Dash this week. Dash are a Class A farm club of the Chicago White Sox.

11) Coming into Tuesday?s game, Ryan Zimmerman had come to bat with 33 men on base, but only knocked two of them in. In his first at-bat Tuesday, Zimmerman hit a two-run triple, which had to be a big relief to both him and the Nationals.

10) Ronald Acuna update: Braves? big prospect has started the season 2-15 in AAA, getting his first two hits of the season Tuesday; they can bring him up Saturday and keep his under team control for that extra year.

Thats a rule that needs to be changed; just bring the good players up early when they?re ready, not when you can manipulate the rules to your advantage.

9) Dodger catcher Kyle Farmer had a cameo role in the 2009 movie The Blind Side; he played the high school QB in the scenes where Sandra Bullock interrupts the football team?s practice.

8) 7,003 fans in Miami Monday, many of them disguised as empty seats; 6,516 more Tuesday night. If you?re in the Witness Protection Program and don?t want to be seen, Marlins Park is an excellent place to hang out.

7) Someone posted on Twitter last night that the actual paid attendance (people who used tickets to get in) on a snowy Monday afternoon in Chicago for the White Sox game was 974 loyal fans, all of whom should get a free ticket to a future Pale Hose game.

6) St Peter?s hired Seton Hall assistant Shaheen Holloway to replace John Dunne, who moved on to Marist, a MAAC rival of the Peacocks.

5) Oklahoma Sooners? basketball team will do something unusual in November; making a road trip to play Tex-Rio Grande Valley and Tex-San Antonio, two mid-major teams.

Big-time teams almost never do this, but those two clubs are both coached by former assistants to Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger, so they?re getting a break? both games should draw really well.

4) 32-year-old Andre Ingram scored 19 points, got 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks in 29 minutes off the Lakers bench in their loss to Houston. It was Ingram?s first NBA game after a decade in the G-League.

Ingram will make $13,824 for playing Tuesday/Wednesday for the Lakers. His G-League salary for the whole season was $26,000.

3) Phillies reliever Pat Neshek collects baseball cards; he recently bought a few boxes of cards and found a Shohei Ohtani card that was signed in red ink, one of only 69 in existence.

Neshek sold the card on eBay for $6,100, which is the good news.

The bad news is that he sold the card before Ohtani?s great week last week; that card has to be worth a hell of a lot more than $6,100 now.

2) Washington scored in first inning in nine of their 11 games this season.

1) Before last night, Aaron Judge was 3-36 in his career at Fenway Park; he went 3-4 with a homer to centerfield last night.
