Friday’s Den: Happy Halloween, everyone…….

— Just watched Jeopardy! for the first time in years; I felt pretty freakin’ stupid
🙂

Luckily they had a football category in the early part, so I got those questions right, but most of the other questions, no chance.
When I was a kid, loved game shows, but I preferred Hollywood Squares to Jeopardy!
Gambit, Concentration, Wheel of Fortune were also on my game show list.

Ravens 28, Dolphins 6
Miami in first half: 42 plays, 211 yards, only 6 points.
Dolphins converted 2-12 third down plays.
Miami in 2nd half: 23 plays, 120 yards, 2 turnovers, no points.
Dolphins missed a 35-yard FG, lost a fumble on their 4-yard line.
Baltimore led 14-6 at halftime.
Jackson threw for 204 yards, 4 TD’s in his return from injury.
Ravens are 14-8 ATS last 22 games as a road favorite.
Last three games, Baltimore held opponent to 74-96-87 rushing yards.

— Detroit Lions gave star DE Aidan Hutchinson a 4-year contract extension worth $180M, with $141M guaranteed, a record for any non-quarterback.

— Coastal Carolina 44, Marshall 27
Marshall led 27-17 at early in third quarter.
Marshall turned ball over on four straight drives after that.
Herd ran ball for 279 yards, but five turnovers is a killer.

— Texas-San Antonio 48, Tulane 26
McCown was 31-33/370 passing, with four TD’s.
Roadrunners led 31-12 at halftime.
UTSA had 116 penalty yards, but was +4 in turnovers.

Jax State outscored the Blue Raiders 14-7 in third quarter.
WR Johnson caught four passes for 131 yards, two TD’s.
Gamecocks are 4-0 in C-USA, tied for first with Kennesaw State

— Missouri State 28, FIU 21
RB Lawrence ran for 104 yards, two TD’s against his old team.
Overall, Bears ran the ball 37 times for 206 yards.
Missouri State converted 8-16 third down plays.

Famous birthdays, October 31st:

Mike Gallego, 65
Fred McGriff, 62
Blue Edwards, 60
Antonio Davis, 57
Steve Trachsel, 55

Friday would’ve been John Candy’s 75th birthday

— Washington Nationals are hiring 33-year old Blake Butera as their new manager; he will be the youngest manager in the major leagues since 1972. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol, 39, was the youngest MLB manager in 2025.
Butera comes from the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization; he played parts of two minor league seasons.
Nationals won the 2019 World Series, but haven’t won more than 71 games in a season since then.

— Minnesota Twins hired former Pirates manager Derek Shelton as their new skipper; Shelton managed Pittsburgh for 5+ seasons, getting fired after a 12-26 start this past season.
Twins have missed the playoffs four of last five years; they were 70-92 this year.

— College basketball starts Monday; West Virginia has its fourth head coach in four years, with former North Texas coach Ross Hodge the newest coach. He went 46-24 in two years with the Mean Green, going 24-12 in AAC games.
Last three years, West Virginia is 47-51, 21-35 in conference games.

— Michael Jordan criticized NBA players taking games off (load management); in his great career, Jordan played in all 82 games nine times. NBA had more physical games when he was playing, too.

— Blue Jays lead the World Series 3-2, after taking two of three games in Los Angeles
a) the 18-inning game Monday was epic, just a fun game to watch.

Chicago Bulls’ G Josh Giddey

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

So this happened the last couple of days………YouTubeTV and Disney are at war, so if you have YouTubeTV, for the time being you don’t have ESPN, ABC, Hulu. No bueno.
I have YouTubeTV because of the NFL Sunday Ticket; it is really good. They’ve set up a library of my favorite movies/TV shows. It is an excellent service.
I pay $120/year for ESPN+ because I love college basketball and they have most of the college basketball games on ESPN+, especially the more obscure leagues. Spend most of my winter on ESPN+, but maybe not this winter.
My thoughts are these:

— Hopefully, they’ll compromise soon and things will return to normal. College basketball starts on Monday; would like to watch the games.

— That said, I am BLEEPING sick and tired of corporate greed, where these networks try and weasel more $$$ out of every nook and cranny. I’ve paid you $120 and I still can’t use your service? Seriously???? Bleep you.

— FOX/DirecTV went thru this three years ago; not sure if they’ve ever resolved their issues, because I dumped DirecTV when they lost the Sunday Ticket.

— We’ll see what happens, but I’m not happy with the Disney people.

— Dodgers 3, Blue Jays 1
Dodgers only had four hits, three of them in the 3rd inning.
Blue Jays had runners on 2nd/3rd, none out in 9th, but didn’t score.
Toronto was 1-9 with runners in scoring position.
Game 7 is Saturday night in Toronto.
Toronto 3B Ernie Clement said Friday that he’s using a glove he bought on EBay a couple of months ago. Seriously.

— Memphis 38, Rice 14
Memphis led 31-7 at halftime.
QB Lewis was 18-22/225 passing; he also ran for 87 yards.
Memphis is 8-1; Rice is 4-5.

— North Carolina 27, Syracuse 10
Syracuse led 10-6 at halftime.
QB Lopez was 15-19/216 passing, with two TD’s.
Tar Heels outgained Syracuse, 425-147.

— Louisiana Tech 55, Sam Houston 14
RB Thevenin ran 11 times for 143 yards, three TD’s.
Tech led 27-0 at halftime.
Only six of Tech’s 60 plays were on third down.

Famous birthdays, November 1st
Robert Foxworth, 84
Ted Hendricks, 78
Jenny McCarthy, 53
Coco Crisp, 46
Stephen Vogt, 41
Anthony Ramos, 34
Brent Rooker, 31
Trent Grisham, 29

— UCLA’s football team has a lease to play its home games at the Rose Bowl thru 2044; apparently, UCLA wants to move its home games to SoFi Stadium, starting as early as next season.
The city of Pasadena has filed a lawsuit that is meant to hold UCLA to its lease agreement at the Rose Bowl. The contract was originally signed in 2010. As usual, there will be lawyers involved.

— Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt has a foot injury, is out for the year; Jeff Sims is the backup; he’s thrown 49 passes for ASU this season.

— Miami Dolphins fired GM Chris Grier Friday; he had been with the Dolphins since 2000, been the GM since 2016, but Miami hasn’t won a playoff game since 2000 and now the team is overhauling their front office.
Coach Mike McDaniel will finish this season, but its hard to believe that the new GM won’t bring in a new coach this winter.

— Los Angeles Angels hired Mike Maddux as their new pitching coach; Maddux has been a pitching coach for four different teams over the last 23 years- he was with the Rangers when they won the World Series two years ago.

— Nine of the last 11 World Series ended with the visiting team winning the last game.

— Belmont has a basketball player, Tyler Lundblade, who shot 47.2% on the arc last year, going 100-212 on 3-pointers. He previously walked on at SMU and TCU but found his stride with Belmont last year.
There is a video of Lundblade making 10 or so 3-pointers in a row at a practice; apparently, he made 60+ in a row behind the arc that day. Shooting is marketable.
