New York Mets (9-12) at Philadelphia Phillies (11-9), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Mike Pelfrey (2-0, 6.32) Philadelphia - Chan Ho Park (0-0, 7.16)

A bitter NL East rivalry commences this evening in South Philadelphia, where the Phillies will host the despised New York Mets for the first of three straight games at Citizens Bank Park.

In each of the past two years, the Phillies have beaten out the Mets down the stretch for the National League East crown, and last season's surge launched Philadelphia to its first World Series title in 28 years. Players on both sides have been involved in a healthy mix of trash talk over the years, and Friday the teams will get together for the first time this season.

New York won 11 of the 18 matchups with Philadelphia a year ago, including six of nine as the guest.

The Phillies will try to get back on the winning track after having their five-game winning streak come to an end with Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia starter Brett Myers (1-2) lasted six innings on the hill and allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks with as many strikeouts over six innings.

Shane Victorino provided the Phillies' offense with a solo home run in the first inning, while Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard had two hits apiece in defeat. The Phils were attempting to sweep a divisional foe for a second consecutive series after winning three in a row against the Florida Marlins last weekend.

Phillies righty Chan Ho Park gets the ball tonight and is still searching for his first win in a Philadelphia uniform. He has recorded four no-decisions in four appearances (3 starts) and totes a 7.16 earned run average.

Park, who has allowed four or more runs in his last three trips to the hill, previously toed the rubber on Saturday in a 6-4 win at Florida. He was reached for four runs and five hits over a season-high seven innings and struck out five batters. The Phils are 3-0 in Park's last three starts.

In 15 career games, nine of which have been starts, against the Mets, Park is 5-3 with a 2.44 earned run average.

New York has been struggling as of late and will continue its tour against NL East foes this evening. The Mets, who have lost two straight and seven of 10, are in the midst of 13 consecutive games versus division foes. The Mets took two of three from Washington last weekend and recently dropped two of three versus Florida.

In Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Marlins at brand-new Citi Field, the Mets were cursed again by their bullpen, as set-up man J.J. Putz (1-2) blew a solid outing from starter Johan Santana by allowing two runs on a Cody Ross single in the eighth inning to suffer the loss. Santana gave up two runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work for the no- decision.

New York spent substantial money this offseason on Putz and fiery closer Francisco Rodriguez to shore up its highly-publicized bullpen woes. It certainly didn't pay off for Jerry Manuel's ballclub in the finale with the Marlins.

The Mets, who will visit Philadelphia for three games before two-game sets against the Braves and Phillies, will send Mike Pelfrey to the hill in Friday's series opener. Pelfrey will take the first crack at the Phillies and is 2-0 with a 6.32 earned run average through three starts this season.

Pelfrey last took the mound Saturday versus Washington and recorded the win with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball, while allowing six hits and walking three batters. The right-hander has lasted at least five innings in each start this season, but has been reached for no less than two runs in all of those outings.

He will try to even his career mark against the Phillies, as Pelfrey sports a 1-2 mark and a 4.09 ERA in four career starts in this series.

Houston Astros (9-13) at Atlanta Braves (10-11), 7:35 p.m.

Houston Astros (9-13) at Atlanta Braves (10-11), 7:35 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Mike Hampton (1-1, 3.86) Atlanta - Derek Lowe (2-1, 3.10)

Two teams languishing through the season's initial stretch get together tonight at Turner Field in the first of a three-game weekend series.

The Houston Astros, participants in the World Series as recently as 2005, find themselves last in the six-team National League Central through 22 games, with just nine wins.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves, who went more than a decade without missing the playoffs until 2006, are a game under .500 at 10-11 in the highly competitive NL East.

Veteran southpaw Mike Hampton gets the call for the Astros for the fifth time this season and seeks his first decision since start No. 2 on April 15.

The 36-year-old opened with a loss at St. Louis and followed with a win at Pittsburgh, but has since come up empty twice, allowing 16 hits and seven runs in 12 1/3 innings while Houston dropped games to Cincinnati and Milwaukee.

Hampton, who established himself in the majors while with the Astros from 1994-1999, was a member of the Braves between 2003 and 2008 but made just 75 appearances and did not play at all in 2006 and 2007 due to injury.

He returned to Houston as a free agent in December, signing a one-year deal worth $2 million.

Hampton hasn't pitched against the Braves since 2002, when he was a member of the Colorado Rockies and got a no-decision in one start while allowing six hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

For Atlanta, big-ticket free agent signee Derek Lowe will try to continue a strong early season with his new team.

Lowe, who'll earn $15 million in the first year of his four-year deal, was a winner in an Opening Day outing at Philadelphia before going three starts without a win between April 10 and 20.

He moved to 2-1 on April 25 at Cincinnati, tossing seven innings and allowing four hits and two runs in a 10-2 Braves win.

The 35-year-old was ripped in one losing matchup with the Astros last season while with the Los Angeles Dodgers, surrendering eight hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

On Wednesday in Cincinnati, Houston had its three-game winning streak stopped, as Edinson Volquez was brilliant, pitching eight shutout innings of one-hit ball in Cincinnati's 3-0 win at Great American Ball Park.

Felipe Paulino (0-2) was the hard-luck loser. The young right-hander allowed two runs -- one earned -- over 5 2/3 innings, struck out three and walked a pair.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta on Wednesday, Albert Pujols went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the St. Louis Cardinals got by the Braves, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Omar Infante finished with three hits and an RBI for Atlanta, which has dropped three of its last four. Casey Kotchman and Jeff Francoeur each had a pair of hits and a run scored in defeat.

Javier Vazquez (2-2) suffered the loss despite going eight innings. He was touched for five runs on nine hits with a walk, but finished with eight strikeouts.

Houston has split its last 12 matchups with the Braves, but holds a slight 10-9 edge in the matchup since the start of the 2006 season.

Arizona Diamondbacks (9-13) at Milwaukee Brewers (12-10), 8:05 p.m.

Arizona Diamondbacks (9-13) at Milwaukee Brewers (12-10), 8:05 p.m.

Arizona Diamondbacks (9-13) at Milwaukee Brewers (12-10), 8:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Jon Garland (2-1, 5.47) Milwaukee - Manny Parra (0-4, 6.52)

The Milwaukee Brewers have been unbeatable over the last 10 days, except for games in which Manny Parra has pitched. The struggling hurler hopes to end his struggles when he takes the mound for the red-hot Brewers in tonight's clash with the Arizona Diamondbacks from Miller Park.

Milwaukee enters this evening's tilt having won eight of their last nine games, with the team's lone blemish over that span -- a 3-2 setback at Houston last Sunday -- coming in Parra's last start. Parra was also on the hill for the Brewers' second most-recent loss, an 11-4 defeat at Philadelphia on April 21 in which he was reached for five runs and walked three in four innings of work.

Parra is 0-4 with a 6.52 earned run average through his first four 2009 starts and hasn't gone past five innings in three of those outings. In addition, he has issued 12 walks over a combined 19 1/3 frames.

The left-hander pitched a little better in Sunday's loss to the Astros, as two of the three runs Parra allowed were unearned in his five-inning start. However, he did walk three batters and threw 97 pitches before exiting.

Parra will be attempting to get back on track against a team he has excelled against so far during his brief big-league career. The 26-year-old faced the Diamondbacks twice as a rookie last season and yielded just one run in 13 innings over those starts, earning a win in one and a no decision in the other.

The Brewers extended their current winning run to four games with a 4-1 decision over Arizona in last night's opener of this four-game series. Milwaukee scored all four of its runs against the Diamondbacks' bullpen in the seventh inning, with Prince Fielder's bases-loaded walk forcing in the go- ahead score.

Arizona starter Max Scherzer held the Brew Crew scoreless over the first six innings and departed with a 1-0 lead, but the combo of Tom Gordon, Juan Gutierrez and Scott Schoeneweis failed to protect that narrow margin. Gordon (0-1) was charged with all four runs allowed and recorded just one out before being taken out.

Mike Cameron finished 3-for-4 and lengthened Milwaukee's advantage to 4-1 with a two-run double off Schoeneweis in the seventh.

Mark DeFelice (2-0) picked up the victory for the Brewers, who have now won five in a row at home, after getting the final two outs of the top of the seventh, while Trevor Hoffman earned his 556th career save by throwing a scoreless ninth.

Jeff Suppan worked the first 6 1/3 innings for Milwaukee and gave up just one run on six hits without a walk.

Arizona, which had won three of its last four coming in, turns to Jon Garland tonight in hopes of evening this series. The veteran righty had his longest start of the season Sunday against San Francisco, a 7 1/3-inning stint in which he allowed four runs on 10 hits and did not receive a decision in his team's 5-4 win over the Giants.

Garland was quite sharp in his previous outing, a 6-3 triumph over Colorado on April 20. In that game, the offseason addition limited the Rockies to two runs -- one earned -- and struck out five batters.

Having pitched exclusively in the American League before this season, Garland started against the Brewers only once during his first nine years in the majors. That came with the Chicago White Sox in 2000, with the 29-year-old tossing seven innings of two-run ball to register a win.

Milwaukee went 5-2 against Arizona in 2008, with a three-game sweep of the D'Backs at home from June 2-4. The Brewers are 11-4 in the series since the start of the 2007 campaign and 7-1 as the host over that time.

San Diego Padres (11-11) at Los Angeles Dodgers (15-8), 10:10 p.m.

San Diego Padres (11-11) at Los Angeles Dodgers (15-8), 10:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Jake Peavy (2-3, 5.74) Los Angeles - Clayton Kershaw (0-2, 7.29)

Jake Peavy hasn't pitched to his typical standards over his last two starts. Perhaps a matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers is what the San Diego Padres ace needs to get back to form.

Peavy will try to maintain his career-long success against the Dodgers when the former National League Cy Young Award winner toes the rubber for the Padres in tonight's second test of a four-game series between the divisional foes from Dodger Stadium.

In 23 career matchups with Los Angeles, Peavy has compiled a sensational 13-2 record with a 2.39 earned run average and a .209 batting average against. However, the Dodgers handled the standout right-hander back on Opening Day, reaching Peavy for four runs (3 earned) over seven innings en route to a 4-1 victory in San Diego on April 6.

Peavy rebounded to win his next two starts, but the two-time All-Star was hit hard during back-to-back losses to San Francisco and Pittsburgh in his final two April outings. Over that pair of games, he gave up 11 runs in 11 innings and walked seven batters.

Peavy's team hasn't fared so well recently either, as the Padres lost for the fifth time in six games with Thursday's 8-5 setback to the NL West-leading Dodgers.

Down 5-4 after 6 1/2 innings, Los Angeles scored twice in both the seventh and eighth frames to move to 7-0 at home on the young season. Orlando Hudson singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh and added a solo homer for the Dodgers, who also received a solo home run and a 2-for-3 performance from Manny Ramirez on the night.

Matt Kemp and Casey Blake each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for Los Angeles, which had lost three of its last four contests coming in.

Three Dodger relievers combined to hold the Padres scoreless over the final three innings, with Ronald Belisario (1-2) getting the win with a shutout seventh and Jonathan Broxton striking out the side in the ninth to record his seventh save of the year.

Luke Gregerson (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up both Los Angeles runs in the seventh. San Diego starter Josh Geer allowed four runs over the first six frames and helped his cause with two singles and an RBI at the plate.

The Dodgers will send out a struggling pitcher for tonight's game as well in youngster Clayton Kershaw. The 21-year-old yielded just two runs and three hits in 12 innings over his first two 2009 starts, but hasn't come close to duplicating those efforts in his two most recent times out.

Kershaw was rocked for six runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings in a loss at Houston on April 21, then surrendered nine runs and eight hits before being removed after just 4 2/3 frames in Sunday's 10-4 defeat to Colorado at Coors Field.

The highly-regarded left-hander is 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA over four lifetime starts against San Diego and held the Padres to one run in a five-inning no decision at Petco Park on April 9.

These teams split a four-game set in San Diego to open this season, but the Dodgers have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the teams.

Colorado Avalanche (8-12) at San Francisco Giants (10-10), 10:15 p.m.

Colorado Avalanche (8-12) at San Francisco Giants (10-10), 10:15 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3, 7.58) San Francisco - Randy Johnson (1-2, 6.16)

The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies each got their 2009 campaigns off to slow starts, but both teams have been showing signs of breaking out as of late.

The two National League West foes aim to continue their good recent stretches when they square off tonight at AT&T Park in the opener of a three-game weekend series.

San Francisco lost seven of its first nine contests to start to season, but the team has gone 7-2 over its nine games to climb back to the .500 mark. Most of the Giants' success has come at home, where the club improved to 8-3 on the year with Wednesday's 9-4 victory over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bengie Molina led a 15-hit San Francisco attack by going 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI, while Edgar Renteria had four hits and knocked in a pair of runs to back seven solid innings out of Tim Lincecum.

Lincecum (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight Dodgers to win his second straight start, with Brian Wilson recording the final four outs to notch his fifth save of the season.

Colorado is also on a bit of a roll at the moment, as the Rockies enter this five-game road trip having won three of their last four matchups. The team was last in action on Wednesday, when it survived a late San Diego comeback bid to post a 7-5 victory over the Padres at Coors Field.

Both Todd Helton and Chris Iannetta homered and drove in three runs to pace Colorado's offense, while Aaron Cook worked seven innings to record his first win of the season.

Cook (1-1) held the Padres scoreless over the first six frames before surrendering three runs in the seventh. Matt Belisle gave up a two-run homer to San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez in the eighth that cut the Rockies' lead to 7-5, but Huston Street came on to strike out the side in the ninth to preserve the win.

Colorado will take its swings tonight against Randy Johnson, with the future Hall of Famer shooting for the 297th victory of his decorated career.

Johnson's first season in San Francisco hasn't gone overly well so far, as the 45-year-old is 1-2 with a subpar 6.16 earned run average through his first four starts. The towering left-hander lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last appearance, a no decision at Arizona on Saturday in which he surrendered a pair of runs and issued a whopping seven walks.

The five-time Cy Young Award winner's performance came just six days after he dominated the Diamondbacks at AT&T Park. Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of that 2-0 Giants' win and yielded just one hit while fanning seven over seven frames.

Johnson won all three of his 2008 starts against Colorado and has historically mastered the Rockies, having amassed an 18-7 record and an excellent 2.31 ERA over 27 overall appearances versus tonight's opponent.

Colorado will hand the ball to youngster Ubaldo Jimenez, who has delivered three straight poor starts following a standout effort in his 2009 debut.

Jimenez twirled seven shutout innings to defeat Arizona on April 7, but the talented Dominican hasn't lasted more than 4 1/3 frames in any of his three mound trips since that win. During that span, he has allowed 16 runs and walked 14 batters in just 12 innings of work.

The 25-year-old was reached for six runs on eight hits in only four innings of a home loss to the Dodgers last Saturday, six days after serving up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.

Jimenez has faced the Giants five times previously and owns a 1-1 record with a 2.37 ERA lifetime against them. He went 1-0 with a sparkling 1.78 ERA in four starts versus San Francisco last season, limiting the Giants to a .159 batting average during that impressive stretch.

Colorado went 11-7 against the Giants in last year's season series and won six of the nine meetings between the teams held in San Francisco.

Wow - nvr thought I'd met a fellow capper that put up NWO stuff. I've watched a lot od Alex's stuff and have wondered what the NWO folks thought of him. Since he allowed the surveilance act to continue - I knew he was one of them. Course they all are, so

I'm new to your thread - do u ever make picks - your capping detail is great.

In the shadows
I defected from anoter site that I won't name. I spent countless hours helping build the board, but was cast aside because I disagreed with what another MOD had written about a school, I asked him to re-write his post and he refused, so I banned him for 48 hours, and being the BITCH that he is he cried like a a Male Cast Member in A Chorus line, or like he was on American Idol :mj07: and got himself back on. None the less, the site is full of a bunch of shit heads and liars. I could go on, but.... I choose to save the rest of my rant for my farewell speech over at that turd heap

Yeah - the experience at this site, though short has been a very good one. Personally I've resolved to stay with the 'positive'. I come to these sites for 2 reasons (which are actually the same reason) to learn and to win. Thanks for the comeback. As time goes on we may have an opp to talk smack abt NWO stuff - but, 1st things first. Currently have a small parlay goin w/ Fla and Stl. Don't usually do MLB parlays but with the big dog - had to try small one.
