Iverson expected to make debut Monday
November 1, 2009

DENVER (AP) -Allen Iverson is expected to make his season debut for the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night at Sacramento.

Iverson is recovering from a partial right hamstring tear and missed his third straight game when the Grizzlies played the Nuggets in Denver on Sunday night.

Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said that when Iverson returns, he'll be part of a three-guard rotation with O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley.

Iverson, traded from Denver to Detroit last season, declined to speak with reporters Sunday night, saying he'll talk when he plays in a game.

NBA injuries: Harris, Robinson out; Redd hurting

The New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks all have injury issues with key backcourt scorers.

The Nets were without All-Star point guard Devin Harris in Saturday's loss to Washington. Harris has a groin strain that will sideline him 7-10 days.

Rafer Alston and Chris Douglas-Roberts shared the point guard duties for the Nets, who are getting 7.5 points at Charlotte on Monday.

Knicks combo guard Nate Robinson is out two weeks with a sprained ankle suffered in Saturday's loss to Philadelphia. He left the arena on crutches.

Robinson was averaging just 8.7 points and likely will be replaced in the rotation by Larry Hughes, who did not play the first two games but played 39 minutes Saturday. The Knicks host New Orleans on Monday (no line).

Bucks guard Michael Redd left Saturday's win over Detroit with soreness in the same left knee that required surgery and sidelined him last season. The team said Redd sat as a precaution.

The Bucks could use a combination of Charlie Bell and Carlos Delfino if Redd is sidelined Tuesday at Chicago

Monday?s best NBA bets

Monday?s best NBA bets

Monday?s best NBA bets

New Jersey Nets at Charlotte Bobcats (-7.5, 177)

Can the Nets be a competitive team in the NBA without Devin Harris? If you watched much of Saturday?s game against the Wizards you probably aren?t overly optimistic.

Harris, New Jersey?s lone All-Star, is expected to miss about a week because of a strained right groin. That shifts the point guard duties over to Rafer Alston. He did a good job Saturday (20 points, eight assists), but he?s not the consistent scoring threat like Harris.

The Nets are 0-3 straight up and against the spread to start the season, and it looks like they?re the front runners to finish at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Charlotte is dreaming of a postseason berth this year and to do that the team will have to buy into coach Larry Brown?s system. That system requires playing a slow, defensive-minded game.

The under would be 3-0 this season in Charlotte games if it hadn?t been for an overtime period against the Knicks.

Expect both sides to struggle to get to 80 points in a game even hardcore NBA fans won?t be able to watch.

Pick: Under

Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz (-8.5, 206)

The Rockets continue their Northwest road swing with a stop Sunday in Salt Lake City. Houston is hoping to improve to 3-1 on the campaign, something that wouldn?t be possible without the contributions of Aaron Brooks.

The former Oregon Duck is averaging 21.7 points and 8.3 assists, and the Rockets are a +18 in point differential when Brooks is on the floor this season.

He?ll have a tough task Monday trying to spark Houston?s offense and slow down Jazz point guard Deron Williams at the other end.

Utah is always tough at home. The Jazz won their home opener Friday night against the Clippers and went 33-8 at EnergySolutions Arena last year.

Pick: Jazz

Iverson expected to debut for Grizzlies at Sacramento

Iverson expected to debut for Grizzlies at Sacramento

Iverson expected to debut for Grizzlies at Sacramento

After sitting out his club's first three games, future Hall of Famer Allen Iverson is expected to make his Memphis debut tonight as the Grizzlies hope to keep a young Sacramento Kings team winless.

Iverson, who has been sitting with a partially torn left hamstring, is expected to team with second-year standout O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley Jr. to give coach Lionel Hollins a talented three-man guard rotation.

The Grizz opened up a five-game west coast road swing on a losing note Sunday when Denver's Carmelo Anthony ended with 42 points and seven rebounds, as the Nuggets out-gunned Memphis, 133-123, to stay undefeated. Anthony recorded his second consecutive 40-point game for the Nuggets, who moved to 3-0 this season.

Mayo paced Memphis with a career-high 40 points, and Marc Gasol added 20 points and 11 rebounds, but the Grizzlies fell for the second time in three games on the young season.

"They showed why they were Western Conference finalists [last season]," Hollins said of the Nuggets. "But we have to be proud of how we battled. If we continue to battle like that, we'll be happy."

Memphis will finish its trip with visits to Golden State, the LA Lakers and the LA Clippers.

The Kings, meanwhile, hope the cozy confines of ARCO Arena can cure their ills. The team finished winless on a three-game road trip to open its season when Tony Parker had 24 points and seven assists to lead San Antonio in a 113-94 blowout of Sacramento on Saturday.

Kevin Martin poured in 26 points and Spencer Hawes scored 22 and secured 10 rebounds for the Kings as new head coach Paul Westphal still searches for his first win with the club.

"We got outworked by them on every category that mattered, defensively, and that's what I was looking at," Westphal said after the loss in the Alamo City.

Sacramento will finish a quick two-game homestand on Wednesday when it faces Atlanta.

These two teams split the four-game season series last season, with each winning once on the road. Overall, however, Memphis has won just two of its 27 visits to California's capital.

The Memphis Grizzlies have big expectations for this season after signing Allen Iverson. The most pressure on Iverson might be coming from the 10-time All Star himself.

After sitting out the Grizzlies' first three games, Iverson is set to debut with his new team Monday night at the winless Sacramento Kings.

When Iverson signed with Memphis (1-2) in September, he was hardly the highly sought-after free agent he thought he deserved to be. The 33-year-old guard would agree to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Grizzlies amid questions about declining skills.

"This year for me is so personal," Iverson said after the signing.

"It's basically going to be my rookie season again. It hurts, but I turn the TV on, I read the paper, I listen to some of the things people say about me having the season that I had last year and me losing a step, things like that. They're trying to put me in a rocking chair already."

It didn't help that Iverson suffered a partially torn left hamstring during training camp, causing him to miss Memphis' first three games. He declined to speak with reporters Sunday night, saying he'll talk when he plays in a game.

In addition to the injury, Iverson will be looking to put a disappointing 2008-09 behind him. After spending most of his career with Philadelphia, Iverson was traded to Denver in 2006, and then to Detroit last November. He averaged 17.4 points in 54 games with the Pistons, before the team announced in early April that he was being shut him down with back problems - a decision that came shortly after Iverson publicly voiced his frustration with having to come off the bench.

While Iverson - expected to be part of a three-guard rotation with O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley - is looking to rejuvenate his career, the Grizzlies are hoping he can provide a veteran presence on a team that is coming off three consecutive seasons with fewer than 25 wins.

Memphis is looking to bounce back following a 133-123 loss to the Nuggets on Sunday. Coming off a win against Toronto, the Grizzlies shot 70 percent en route to 40 points in the first quarter, but fell behind 67-66 by halftime and couldn't regain control.

"I thought we were in good shape at halftime," said Mayo, who scored a career-high 40 points after finishing with a combined 27 in Memphis' first two games. "But in the third quarter it seemed like they scored for 10 or 12 straight minutes."

The Kings, meanwhile, return home after going winless on a three-game trip to start the season. Sacramento lost 113-94 to San Antonio on Sunday, falling behind by 16 points at the half and 21 early in the third quarter. Kevin Martin scored 29 points while Spencer Hawes added 22 and 10 rebounds off the bench. They were the only Kings to finish in double figures, however, while the Spurs shot 58.1 percent.

"It was over relatively early," first-year Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "Tonight was a good lesson for a young team. We were beating our heads against the walls trying to figure out how to beat this team and stay in the game."

Sacramento and Memphis split four meetings last season, with each winning once on the road. Iverson averaged 26.5 points in two games against the Kings in 2008-09.

New Jersey Nets (0-3) at Charlotte Bobcats (1-2), 7 p.m.

New Jersey Nets (0-3) at Charlotte Bobcats (1-2), 7 p.m.

The last time the New Jersey Nets lost four straight games to start a season John Calipari was head coach. Since then Calipari has achieved success at the collegiate ranks, while the Nets have made a few deep runs in the playoffs but no championships to show for it.

Now the Nets will try to stop a three-game season-opening slide when they pay a visit to the Charlotte Bobcats Monday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. New Jersey fell to 0-3 for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign following Saturday's 123-104 setback at Washington, as Chris Douglas-Roberts led the way with 25 points.

Rafer Alston finished with 20 points and eight assists for New Jersey, which lost to Minnesota and Orlando before Saturday's setback. The last time the Nets opened a season with four consecutive losses was when they kicked off the 1996-97 campaign under Calipari with five straight defeats.

"We've still got to keep growing as a unit," said Nets guard Courtney Lee, who had 17 points. "And get comfortable with each other, in different rotations and matchups that are out there."

Nets star point guard Devin Harris missed the game with a groin injury and is expected to miss at least one week. Harris originally injured the groin in an exhibition game and aggravated it during Friday's loss to Orlando. He is expected to see a specialist, while Alston will most likely continue starting in Harris' place.

Charlotte, meanwhile, will open a quick two-game homestand Monday versus the Nets and Hawks. It has dropped two of three games to kick off the new season, including Saturday's 90-79 setback to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena.

Vladimir Radmanovic played big role as a reserve, scoring a team-high 12 points for the Bobcats, who got 11 points apiece from Gerald Wallace and D.J. Augustin.

"Obviously guys are tired. The double-overtime game ended late," said Bobcats center Tyson Chandler. "We had a shot at this game. We had a lot of turnovers that put us out of the game."

New Jersey took two of three matchups with the Bobcats a season ago and has won 14 of the 18 meetings in this series. The Nets have also won two straight and eight of nine contests at Charlotte.

Date: November 02, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Off to their worst start in 10 years, the New Jersey Nets have perhaps their best opportunity yet to get their first win in their next game.

After a miserable defensive showing in their last outing, the Nets look to extend their dominance over the league's lowest-scoring team as they visit the Charlotte Bobcats on Monday night.

In Saturday night's 123-104 defeat in Washington, New Jersey (0-3) allowed the Wizards to shoot a season-high 61.5 percent. After the game, Nets coach Lawrence Frank called his team's effort "pitiful."

"It was a very, very dismal defensive performance," Frank said. "It's a total breakdown. There were so many things that go into it that it's hard to minimize it into one or two things."

Thanks in large part to the rout over the weekend, New Jersey ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring defense at 104.3 points allowed per game. The Nets, though, could get a break Monday against the Bobcats, who are averaging 80.0 points and shooting 37.2 percent - both worst in the NBA.

The Nets haven't opened with four straight losses since starting 0-5 in 1996-97.

The Bobcats (1-2) also could be winless, if not for Friday night's 102-100 double overtime victory over visiting New York. They followed with a 90-79 loss in Cleveland on Saturday but shot a season-best 42.6 percent.

"I saw a lot of good things, but unfortunately we keep seeing some of the bad things," coach Larry Brown told the team's official Web site. "We're getting better. We're making progress. We just have to clean up some stuff. We're trying to do the right thing. We just have to make it a little simpler and do a better job."

Only three Charlotte players are averaging in double figures, led by Raymond Felton's 13.7 per game. The team's top acquisition in the offseason, Tyson Chandler, has averaged 4.7 points while shooting 6 for 18 overall.

Chandler had surgery in the spring to relieve inflammation in his left ankle and another procedure on his left toe, and he still isn't 100 percent.

Bobcats guard Raja Bell is expected to make his season debut after deciding to delay surgery for a partially torn ligament in his left wrist. He was able to make one-handed passes and catch the ball during shootaround Monday morning, but admitted defending "will be an adventure."

Fellow shooting guard Flip Murray has also been out with a left shin injury to begin this season, and he's questionable for this game.

Even with a healthy lineup, the Bobcats have historically struggled to beat the Nets over their previous five seasons in the league, dropping 14 of 18 all-time matchups. They've beaten New Jersey only once in nine home games, 115-99 on Jan. 8, 2008.

The Nets, however, needed overtime to pull out a 114-103 victory in their only game in Charlotte last season. Overall, New Jersey took two of three in the 2008-09 season series.

The Nets, though, will again be without top returning scorer Devin Harris, who is expected to miss at least a week due to a strained groin. Harris averaged a career-best 21.3 points in 2008-09 but had totaled 30 on 32.3 percent shooting in the first two games this season.

Second-year center Brook Lopez has led New Jersey with 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while shooting 57.1 percent.

New Orleans Hornets (1-2) at New York Knicks (0-3), 7:30 p.m.

The New York Knicks are still in search of their first win of the season and Monday may not be the day it arrives with the New Orleans Hornets set to invade Madison Square Garden.

New York started the 2009-10 season with back-to-back road losses in Miami and Charlotte, then opened a four-game homestand with Saturday's 141-127 overtime loss versus the Atlantic Division-foe Philadelphia 76ers.

Al Harrington pumped in a career-high 42 points before fouling out in the extra period, while Danilo Gallinari buried 8-of-16 from behind the arc for 30 points in defeat. Larry Hughes scored 18 points for New York, which played its second straight overtime game and is off to its worst start since losing the first five contests of the 2005-06 season.

"Another night that we need to build on," Knicks head coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I know we're 0-3, I understand that. I understand two of them were overtime games. There was just some really good stuff. We're going to accentuate the positives, we're going to build on it. Obviously that means the first quarter."

The Knicks will also host Indiana and Cleveland on the residency. In team news, Harrington was fined $25,000 by the NBA for publicly criticizing game officials. The comments were made following New York's 102-100 double overtime loss to the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday.

New Orleans has dropped two of its first three games of the season, and is coming off Sunday's 97-87 setback to the Boston Celtics at TD Garden.

Peja Stojakovic led the Hornets with 26 points and Chris Paul contributed 22 points and eight assists in defeat. New Orleans, which entered the contest off a home win versus Sacramento, got 10 points from David West.

"Well, I don't know how good you can feel," Stojakovic said of his contribution. "It's still a loss. We tried I think we didn't have enough focus for 48 minutes. Some parts of the game were good for us from both ends of the floor. But we just didn't have enough consistency."

New York won both matchups with the Hornets last season, but New Orleans is 8-4 over the past 12 meetings between the teams. The Knicks have won 12 of the previous 18 contests in this series at MSG.

Houston Rockets (2-1) at Utah Jazz (1-1), 9 p.m.

Winning a third consecutive game won't be an easy task for the Houston Rockets, who will face a tough road test tonight against the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.

After losing their season opener at Portland last week, the Rockets have ripped off back-to-back victories over Golden State and the Blazers. In Saturday's 111-107 triumph in a rematch versus Portland at the Toyota Center, Trevor Ariza registered a career-high 33 points to lead the way and is averaging 23.3 points per game this season. Aaron Brooks poured in 28 points and handed out eight assists in a winning cause.

"We hustled tonight, didn't allow them to dominate the boards, Trevor played well," said Brooks. "We tried to get the transition game going tonight."

The Rockets are off to a surprising start without its top players. Ron Artest signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason and Yao Ming is out for the year with a foot injury, while Tracy McGrady is still recovering from knee surgery. Houston will face a true test over the next few weeks against formidable teams such as the Lakers, Mavericks, Suns, Hawks and Spurs.

Utah's next three matchups with Texas-based clubs is no easy task either, as it prepares to face the Rockets, Mavericks and Spurs. The Jazz posted their first win of the 2009-10 season with a 111-98 victory Friday at home versus the Los Angeles Clippers thanks to Paul Millsap, who scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead the charge.

Carlos Boozer had 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for Utah, which notched its 13th straight victory over the Clippers. Deron Williams added 21 points and nine assists, while Ronnie Brewer ended with 17 points and five rebounds in a winning cause.

"In the second half, we did a much better job defensively," Boozer said. "Down the stretch, we executed every time. We didn't score every time, but we got great shots."

Jazz center Mehmet Okur missed the Clippers game with a sprained ankle and is listed as probable for Monday's game.

Houston and Utah split four meetings a year ago. The Rockets haven't played particularly well in Salt Lake City, losing three in a row and 21 of their previous 24 games as the guest in this series.
