The Philadelphia cheesesteak originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the 1930s at a hot dog stand run by brothers Pat and Harry Olivieri in South Philadelphia. The original sandwich was a simple steak and onion sandwich, with cheese being added later in the 1940s after it gained popularity.
