Al: The teacher that is being deported for naming a teddy bear "Mohamed" sums it up in that religious dogma is irrational and detrimental to modern society.
I have covered this before, and might even have said it a different way, but I'll try to list some of my thoughts below.
1. Organized religion will lead to the end of humanity. Religious beliefs have been leading us to kill one another for centuries. The advent of nuclear weapons and the increasing access to these weapons is going to prove disastrous in the hands of the faithful. Intolerance is intrinsic to every creed.
2. Education: BS like creationism is interfering with our ability to educate our children. If we rely on the Bible for our understanding of the world, we?re going to be surpassed intellectually by those that rely on reality and science.
3. Science & Medicine: It gets in the way of our ability to make medical advances. Stem cell research could revolutionize medicine, but religious dogma prevents its advances. When the life of a cell is more important than the life of a dying child, something is desperately wrong.
4. ?Moral? Laws: I have a big problem with laws made for religious reasons: For example, In Michigan, you can?t buy beer before noon on Sundays or the laws in many states against sodomy or other private sexual acts. I?m going to quote Sam Harris on this subject because he articulates it well: ?It is time we realized that crimes without victims are like debts without creditors. They do not even exist. Any person who lies awake at night worrying about the private pleasures of other consenting adults has more than too much time on his hands; he has some unjustifiable beliefs about the nature of right and wrong.?
My strong feelings on religion are related to my frustration with its blind acceptance. As I've mentioned many times before, I was raised Catholic, went to a Catholic HS and University. I've read more books about religion and philosophy than I care to admit. While religion drives me crazy, I'm obsessed with learning about its place in society and learning more about it. Hopefully, some of what I have learned will start to rub off on others.
