The following link is to a SouthPark rendition of the history of Mormonism. The sad part about it is that it's the real story. I read the book Under the Banner of Heaven, by Jon Krakauer, and it details the history of the LDS Church.

Any thoughts on this religion? Personally, I think this is the biggest joke of all mainstream religions. The sad part is that this is the fastest growing religion in the US.

They're all nothing but cults ... however, on a ridiculousness scale on 1-100, I put Mormonism at 99.8, slightly behind scientology.

Go to Utah and check them out. There are bad things about Mormonism, but the Mormons have built a very successful culture. Mormons come from a beautiful Nordic racial stock. They're not cow-assed, thunder-thighed dirt-eaters like all too many Bible Belt Baptists.

Bad things about Mormonism? How about the fact that the entire religion is based on complete BS. If you think the part about Joseph Smith translating the golden plates (that nobody else ever saw) by looking into a hat is a joke, think again.

If you haven't watched the link to the SouthPark clip, you need to.

I put more emphasis on how each candidate has led their personal lives rather than which religion or no religion.

I personally have distain for most the tv preachers with money as objective--but feel you'd be hard pressed to find better character than the strange cults of no eclectricity--horse and buggy clans.

Case in point--man comes in and kills their children at school and they take up donation for killers family.

It's how we live our lives not what associations we belong to.

as the old adage says--actions speak louder than words.

ah, Mormons... gmroz, you hit the nail on the head with what you said. Also, the "ancient cities" mentioned in their Bible left absolutely no artifacts. The golden plates have disappeared, all traces of huge ancient cities left not one single artifact, and this was dreamed up by a teenager.

I know you and most here don't believe in God anyway, but I just don't want Mormons confused with Christians.

Wayne: I think this line of thinking is flawed, but it isn't a dig at you. It's a common viewpoint expressed when people start talking about religious beliefs. If a guy believes that the Native Americans are descendents from Israel and their "red" skin tone is a punishment from God, we should hold that against them.

Clint: I was expecting to hear from you, but I never would have guessed you'd be siding with me.

What's really funny is that you've covered a part of their ridiculous story and the South Park video covers even more, but this is just scratching the surface. I won't even get into what the Book of Mormon says about Black people.

gmoroz...

i'm curious why you are so vehemently against religion ?

i don't believe in religion either & am not convinced that there is a god, but i believe that it's okay if others believe in it....but you seem to be on a crusade against religion...

do you mind to briefly explain why you are so against religion but i understand if you don't want to talk about it...

Al: The teacher that is being deported for naming a teddy bear "Mohamed" sums it up in that religious dogma is irrational and detrimental to modern society.

I have covered this before, and might even have said it a different way, but I'll try to list some of my thoughts below.

1. Organized religion will lead to the end of humanity. Religious beliefs have been leading us to kill one another for centuries. The advent of nuclear weapons and the increasing access to these weapons is going to prove disastrous in the hands of the faithful. Intolerance is intrinsic to every creed.

2. Education: BS like creationism is interfering with our ability to educate our children. If we rely on the Bible for our understanding of the world, we?re going to be surpassed intellectually by those that rely on reality and science.

3. Science & Medicine: It gets in the way of our ability to make medical advances. Stem cell research could revolutionize medicine, but religious dogma prevents its advances. When the life of a cell is more important than the life of a dying child, something is desperately wrong.

4. ?Moral? Laws: I have a big problem with laws made for religious reasons: For example, In Michigan, you can?t buy beer before noon on Sundays or the laws in many states against sodomy or other private sexual acts. I?m going to quote Sam Harris on this subject because he articulates it well: ?It is time we realized that crimes without victims are like debts without creditors. They do not even exist. Any person who lies awake at night worrying about the private pleasures of other consenting adults has more than too much time on his hands; he has some unjustifiable beliefs about the nature of right and wrong.?

My strong feelings on religion are related to my frustration with its blind acceptance. As I've mentioned many times before, I was raised Catholic, went to a Catholic HS and University. I've read more books about religion and philosophy than I care to admit. While religion drives me crazy, I'm obsessed with learning about its place in society and learning more about it. Hopefully, some of what I have learned will start to rub off on others.

-Gary

Thanks Al. Based on the comment below, I'm guessing you probably won't share what you agree with and what you disagree with....but I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts and perspective.

do you mind to briefly explain why you are so against religion but i understand if you don't want to talk about it...

Another issue I have with this statement is that it is part of the problem. We give religion a pass and never expect anyone to discuss their beliefs? The shield and protection we provide is exactly what keeps us from making any headway with absurd and irrational religious beliefs.

there's many people on this forum who i respect that believe in organized religion & i choose to not to offend or insult them.

but i do occasionally have conversations with my wife & her friend on the subject since they are believers & if we ever meet up i will make sure that i introduce you to my wife....& then walk away...:142smilie

I'll raise the ire of dawgball and pirate fan, but herein lies your problems with religion, Gary. I'm not sure if I've ever met an atheist or agnostic who wasn't raised Catholic. Of course I agree with most of your points in that post too, but you already know that.
