With post time approaching in a few days, time to break this race down. Forget throwing any horse out of your exotics, but when looking for the winner, there are some KEY trends to look for..

The last time a Derby winner finished 4th or worse in their final prep race was 1957. (Throw out Ank Naked, Big Truck, Cool Coal Man, Denis of Cork, Pyro and Visionaire)

A horse has never won the Derby without at least 1 start at 1 1/8 (everyone qualifies)

Throw out horses with a new Jockey on board ( Monba,Cool Coal Man, Anak Nakal, all qualify)

A total of 38 Fillies have been entered in the Derby over the years with just 3 winning (13.6%) Have to throw out Eight Belles with that percentage....

86% of all Derby winners have had 3 or more starts as a 3 year old ( throw out Monba, Court Vision, Recapture the Glory, Tale Of Ekati,Colonel John, Big Brown

87% of all Derby winners raced their last prep 5 weeks or less prior to the Big race (throw out Adriano,Big Brown, and Smooth Air )

88% of all Derby winners had a Speed Fig of at least 100 in 1 of their last 3 preps (throw out Pyro, Tale of Ekati, Colonel John, Cowboy Cal, Visionair, Big Truck, Dennis of Cork, Smooth Air, Cool Coal Man, Anka Nakal, Eight Belles, Z Humor, Monba, Court Vision, and Adriano)

Considering all of these trends, it leaves just 3 horses.....

Bob Black Jack (pp13)
Gayego (pp19)
Z Fortune (pp6)

considering that speed usually kills in this race, Bob Black Jack would be my last favorite of this group. Gayego and Z Fortune both like to sit just off the pace, but post 19 is a major concern for Gayego. Actually like his speed fig's a bit better. Still have more reserch to do, but if I had to pick a winner today......

Z Fortune.

Note: Horse that came up as repeat's in the above trends, you might want to stay clear of all togeather.

one more trend I came across.....

The Post Time Favorite hasn't won in back to back years since 1974-1975

Street Sense won last year as the public choice...

another formula I found....

Add the speed fig's for each horses last 3 races....

This site claims the top 6 have been in the excata 9 of the past 12 Derbys (found no evidence to back this up)

1. Big Brown 302
2. Gayego 301
3. Bob Black Jack 297
4. Smooth Air 279
5. Cowboy Cal 276
6. Colonel John 274

The Avg winning speed figure of all Derby Winners is 108.

Horses with a fig of 100 or higher their last prep race...

Big Brown 106
Gayego 103
Z Fortune 102
Recapturetheglory 102

So. Cal
good info, however to me it just looks like the race is even more wide open than i thought as i dont really like gayego, bob black jack or z fortune

might be time to bring my 20 sided dice and roll it 4 times for a tri box wager!

I agree... Tough field this year. Everything I've posted can really be thrown out once that gate opens, as you can't handicap the bounce...Usually the Horse with the easiest trip finds the winners circle, but can't help but side with the staggering numbers some of these trends show...

Good Luck gjn!

well, Gayego is off my big board...

Only 3 of the past 73 (4.3%) Derby winners have had less than 6 career starts.

another very interesting trend I came across....

97% of ALL Derby winners won a race of at least 1 mile as a 2 year old. ( throw out Big Truck, Dennis of Cork, Pyro, Tale of Ekati, Coloniel John, Gayego, Smoothair Rapturetheglory, and most importantly Bob Black Jack)

Take it for what it's worth, but I will be playing

Z Fortune

93% chance to win from post 1-15
96% chance to win with at least 6 career starts
88% chance to win with a 100 or higher speed fig in of last 3 starts
87% chance to win if last prep race was 5 weeks ago or sooner
86 % chance to win with 3 or more starts as a 3 year old
97% chance to win with a victory as a 2 year old at a mile distance or further.
90% chance to win with a Dosage Index of 4.0 or less

This Colt is the only horse in the field that qualifies for each and every Kentucky Derby trend listed above. I'm sure there's more out there, but I couldn't find any as soild as these that have stood the test of time. You only need a 1% chance to win, so I guess you could say these mean very little. As far as I know, all the horses entered have 4 legs with a Jockey and a whip.

Will have an exotic play or two as well over the next couple days...

Damn son...Way to put the pressure on me! Just remember....opinions are just like assholes..you know the rest..

Just went out and booked my bets this afternoon at the local OTB. All the regulars were there (you know the older, overweight , unemployed guys with a cough that sounds like they have lung cancer... ) ALL the talk was about Colonel John, Big Brown and Monba...

Added a Oaks/Derby double play 7,8,11 /Z fortune $6 bet

Anyway, hope we cash togeather my friend. I NEVER bet much on this race, as the payouts are always great even with chalk. Not to mention, It really is just another one of thousands to bet on.

Didn't catch the race, but see Proud Spell won the Oaks. Checked the future will pays the Oak/Derby double and see Z Fortune is the Public's 5th choice paying just under $144 !

Big Brown is taking ALL the $$$$ paying only $38
Colonel John and Pyro co-2nd choices paying $55
Court Vision will get double bettors $132

VERY happy to see ZF getting some play here...Normally, the occasional bettor dosen't play this kind of wager and my guess is those "Derby Only "gamblers that did play it took Big Brown. This is a very good sign to me that this Colt has a real shot.

I have about $350-400 to wager with.

Its either a superfecta or trifecta.

A trifecta 4x11x11 is $360 Thats for a $1

A superfecta 4x7x7x6 is $400 thats for a $1

Which would you choose?

My top 3 horses at the top are Court Vision, Z Fortune, and Visionaire. Im still searching for a 4th
