Big 12 Game of the Week

West Virginia (1-1) at Colorado (2-0), 8:30 EST, ESPN, Thursday, September 18
Why to watch: Now what, West Virginia? It?s not as if the Mountaineers haven?t suffered devastating losses in recent years, but the steady hand of Rich Rodriguez was always around to get the program back on track. Now there?s a new coaching staff with a new philosophy being asked to energize a program that was bounced by East Carolina, failing to score a touchdown for the first time in seven years. Abruptly out of national championship contention, West Virginia is still determined to remain the top dog in the Big East. While Colorado is unbeaten, it might be in a similar quandary as the Mountaineers if the early schedule was tougher. After skating past Colorado State, the Buffs needed to pull a Houdini act to escape Eastern Washington. A visit from West Virginia will go a long way to determining which was the real Colorado and whether the program is prepared to take a step forward in Dan Hawkins? third season.
Why West Virginia might win: If the Mountaineers want to lean more on Pat White?s left arm, this week?s opponent won?t offer a ton of resistance. Colorado has concerns in the defensive backfield that were exposed by Eastern Washington QB Matt Nichols. He threw for 303 yards and was sacked just once in 51 attempts. If White gets similar time, he?ll find ways to get the ball to sprinters Noel Devine and Jock Sanders in space. In general, this is not a great matchup for the back seven of the Buffalo defense.
Why Colorado might win: The Buffs will be facing a different defense than the one that was so ornery in 2007. West Virginia looked lost at times in the East Carolina game, and is clearly missing injured MLB Reed Williams. The Mountaineers were picked apart by the Pirates, getting just one sack and no turnovers. C Daniel Sanders is the catalyst of a physical line that?ll give Cody Hawkins the passing lanes needed to find his slickest target, Scotty McKnight. Don?t discount the impact of a Thursday night home crowd that senses the big-picture importance of this game.
Who to watch: Like so many, this game will be decided in the trenches, specifically when West Virginia has the ball. The veteran Mountaineers line has future pros in Greg Isdaner and Ryan Stanchek, but they?ll get pushed by Colorado?s inside tandem of George Hypolite and Brandon Nicolas. Both big and quick, the two seniors are capable of blowing up plays before they can develop. If too many runs get past this pair, the Buffs are in big trouble.
What will happen: This is not the same West Virginia team that?s been so scary good for the last three years, but it?s going to go back to what worked. Welcome back to the running game. Colorado will play well in front of a national TV audience and an electric crowd, but White and the Mountaineer attack will run its way back into respect
CFN Prediction: West Virginia 34 ? Colorado 27 ... Line: WVU -3
Must See Rating: (5 Dr. 90210 - 1 Biggest Loser: Families) ? 3.5

I know that Hawkins has severely limited his playbook so far this year...on purpose....saving lots of winkles for this game. I think Cody goes for 400 and 4 TD's.

If you like passing, this will be a fun game!

In his two-plus years at the Colorado helm, Dan Hawkins has notched some significant wins over teams with some great tradition.

Oklahoma, Nebraska and West Virginia come to mind.

Common thread? All at Folsom Field.

It means Hawk still has a big hole in his rebuilding r?sum? at Colorado: a signature road win.

Thus far, Hawkins' biggest CU wins away from home have been over Colorado State (neutral field) and at Texas Tech. While the win over Texas Tech last season was impressive, it's not what you call a "signature" win.

The Buffs can change that today.

(Yes, we know today's contest vs. Florida State in Jacksonville is technically a neutral site. But with roughly 47,000 of the anticipated crowd of 50,000 expected to be Seminole fans -- and just a couple hours down the highway from Tallahassee -- it's a road game in about every sense of the word.)

Today's game, the second for CU in what might be one of the toughest stretches on anyone's schedule this season, is the latest chance for the Buffs to send a message nationally.

The Seminoles without doubt have been one of the nation's premier programs over the last 20 years. They've won two national titles in that span (the most recent in 1999), they've been virtually a constant in the nation's top 25 (22 finishes since 1984), and their coach is an icon of the game in every sense of the word. Bobby Bowden will step on the sidelines today for the 500th time as a head coach, a number matched by only two other men (Amos Alonzo Stagg and Joe Paterno).

It's an opportunity that doesn't come along very often for a program eager to re-establish itself in the national eye.

But throw a damper on Bowden's 500th party and do it on national television, and you can bet that people around the nation will sit up and take notice.

Certainly, the Buffs turned some heads with their win over West Virginia nine days ago. Enough so, anyway, that they received more than a handful of votes in both the AP and coaches' polls.

But a win today would bump the prestige meter another notch.

No doubt, the odds are stacked against Colorado today. About a dozen Seminoles will be makingtheir 2008 debuts after serving three-game suspensions. It means a good defense will be even better, and a struggling offense should get a shot in the arm.

Then there's the distraction of playing on the road, as well as the reputation of the team wearing the home uniforms. Throw in the hoopla surrounding Bowden's 500th game, and the Buffs couldn't be blamed for going in a little wide-eyed.

Hawkins, though, says he expect his young Buffs to be star-struck.

"That's the benefit of the schedule that we play," Hawkins said earlier this week. "Playing at Invesco, playing on television, playing West Viriginia ... We always talk about just having your 'A' game in life everyday.

"We're going to travel, play on the national stage and play a good team. They just look at that as being Colorado football."

There, however, some factors in CU's favor.

Because the game isn't in Tallahassee, only a small gathering of students is expected, rather than the regular 15,000 that attend games at FSU. And, while the crowd will definitely be heavily tilted toward the Seminoles, it will still be smaller than if the game were in Tallahassee.

But no matter where the game is played, the Buffs will need their "A" game. That means eliminating turnovers and penalties, and establishing more consistency on the offensive side of the ball. It means protecting quarterback Cody Hawkins, producing enough of a running game to keep the Seminoles honest up front, and creating more of the big plays that seem to already have become a staple of this team.

Defensively, it means another effort like the one that limited West Virginia to just 14 points. Buff defensive coordinator Ron Collins had a great game plan for the Mountaineers; if he can duplicate that today, the Buffs should be in the game down the stretch.

By no means is this a "must-win" for the Buffs. Lose, and they'll still have the entire Big 12 season in front of them.

But, if the Buffs want to truly put themselves in the national picture four games into the season, this is indeed an opportunity they can't afford to squander.

McCoy delivering for Texas
Junior QB 2nd nationally in passing efficiency

By Ryan Thorburn Camera Sports Writer
Friday, October 3, 2008

Imagine if Cody Hawkins were able to accomplish the following this season as a sophomore:

Lead Colorado to a 10-win season.

Earn offensive most valuable player honors in the Holiday Bowl during an 18-point CU win over a Pac-10 opponent.

Complete 65.1 percent of his passes for 3,303 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Earn first-team academic all-Big 12 honors.

The head coach's son would stand alone as a great young quarterback.

Last year at Texas, Colt McCoy was able to do all of the above as a sophomore. But instead of being the most popular person in Austin, a lot of the fanatics -- upset about losses to rivals Oklahoma and Texas A&M -- were harshly critical of their young quarterback.

Longhorns head coach Mack Brown stood by his man, and so far this season he has been the real McCoy.

The junior is playing at a Heisman Trophy level, having completed 80 percent of his passes for 1,018 yards with 14 touchdowns and one interception. McCoy has also run for a team-best 278 yards and four touchdowns during an impressive 4-0 start.

McCoy and No. 5 Texas faces Colorado on Saturday at Folsom Field (5 p.m., FSN).

"We foresee a lot of sleepless nights as a defensive staff,? CU secondary coach Greg Brown said when asked about preparing for McCoy. ?He?s really good and he?s the real deal. Not only is he accurate, he has a great touch, great strength and great command. Besides all that he has got the unfair advantage of being a guy who can run whenever things do break down and get out of trouble. And not just run adequately, but he runs great.?

McCoy is also surrounded by blue-chip athletes similar to the ones Vince Young led to the national championship three years ago.

?I think the main thing for Colt right now is he?s relaxed and trying to do whatever he can do to make our offense more effective,? Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley said this week. ?The thing about him is I don?t think he is putting too much on himself. He is not going to force anything. He is going to do his part. He is the kind of guy that is able to relax and just the play the game. I think that is what he is doing right now.?

It appears that McCoy ? who ranks second nationally in passing efficiency (an off-the-charts QB rating of 209.7) ? has finally scrambled out of Young?s shadow.

But most of the country is convinced that Missouri?s Chase Daniel is the best quarterback in the Big 12. Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) and Todd Reesing (Kansas) are usually mentioned next in the discussion.

That?s not the case at the Dal Ward Center this week. Dan Hawkins had no problem using Heisman candidate and Colt McCoy in the same sentence during his weekly press conference, and the respect has trickled down to the Buffs players.

?Until you watch film of him you don?t really realize how special of a guy he is. He?s a lot more athletic than people ever give him credit for,? CU defensive tackle George Hypolite said of McCoy. ?He runs some designed QB draws and he makes guys miss, breaks some tackles, and he has an electric arm. He can throw the ball just about anywhere on the football field.

?He?s a very dangerous quarterback like a Chase Daniel. Except more athletic. We?re up against it.?

During last Saturday?s 52-10 bludgeoning of Arkansas, McCoy threw three touchdowns passes and added two touchdown runs. He set a personal best in completion percentage (17-of-19, 89.5 percent), while helping Texas set a school record in single-game completion percentage (21-of-23, 91.3 percent).

Those are scary numbers for a CU defense that had trouble stopping Eastern Washington?s spread attack earlier in the season.

?You have to go out there trying to make plays and to win the game. You don?t want to go out there just to try and keep it close,? CU safety Ryan Walter said when asked if one of the keys for his unit would be not allowing the big play. ?We?re definitely going to do some things here and there to try to put some pressure on them and try and get some turnovers on defense.?

The Longhorns promise last week?s carnage in the top 25 ? national title contenders USC and Florida were both upset by lesser conference foes ? has them focused on the Buffs, even with the Red River Shootout against the No. 1 Sooners looming next Saturday.

?It shows that every week you have to be prepared. There is no doubt that those teams were probably better teams, just that day they didn?t play as good as the other teams,? McCoy said during his weekly press conference. ?We have to be prepared every week. That is why our focus is completely on Colorado right now and playing good football. They are playing really good at home. It is going to be night game, so we definitely have to be prepared.?

The Buffs led SportsCenter last season by stunning then No. 3 Oklahoma 27-24 on Sept. 29, 2007. While that result will give the home team confidence against the Longhorns, the leaders on CU?s team realize it will take similar preparation and execution to pull off a similar upset.

?If we don?t prepare for Texas they?re going to beat us 70-3 again,? Hypolite said, referring to the score of the 2005 Big 12 title game.

McCoy and CU quarterback Cody Hawkins both watched the 2005 lopsided meeting between the programs on the sideline as redshirt freshmen. The gap has closed between the programs somewhat since, but by how much?

The play of the quarterbacks on Saturday night will go a long way in determining that.

?They play in the Big 12, so they are going to be good,? McCoy said of the Buffs. ?They have only lost one game. We are excited about going out there. ...

?We don?t really focus on the rankings. We focus on ourselves and how good we can be. We have a long ways to go.?
