Chasing the Next Dime...
I know alot of us have lost Father's over the years. Lost mine 16 years ago and not a day goes by that I don't think of him.

My Dad gave me a copy of this poem before he died and I know I have passed it on here before, but always feel good to pass it on again!

The following prayer was written by General Douglas MacArthur -

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know Thee?.Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, ?I have not lived in vain.?

Know what you feel Bart, my dad would have been 69 this past January 12th. It's been almost 3 years since he passed away unexpectedly and it still feels like yesterday.

Me and my Dad were more like best friends than father and son. I am definitely my father's son. I sound like him, think like him, and I pretty much am him.....mixed with a little bit of my Mom's big, soft heart for animals.

My Dad was cremated and I suppose it really was a no-brainer when it came to who was going to have possession of my Dad's ashes. When my Mom moved out of the house that she and my Dad shared, she told me that I should go get Dad from the mantle and take him with me. One day, maybe I'll scatter them somewhere, but for now, I like that he's here to watch over me. He and Lizzie are hanging out together (for those of you who don't know...Lizzie was my dog for many years before she got lymphoma and suddenly passed a week after I found out). So she and Dad have that bond as well....the good ol cancer bond.

I'll be honest, it worries me sometimes....that I am so much like my Dad that I, too, may end up with cancer. It sorta runs in the family. All I try to do is stay current on my doctor's visits now. I used to be really bad about that.....kind of like, ignorance is bliss. But as I have gotten older, I like to think I have gotten a little smarter. So maybe someday, when there are little Barts running around, I'll be running around with them.......and they'll know how awesome their Papa Root was (that's what my Dad wanted to be called by his grandkids).

Sorry pbart, yep, reminds me to give my thanks

Wasn't all that close to my Dad, he stopped living with us when I was 5 or so. But I saw him every week.

He is WWII vet, now 87 and more physically/mentally together than my 83 yr old mom (she showing some minor dementia now, but still drives and no problem with check book).

Dad (who was a jock) tells me the good genes he gave me going to waste sitting around all day on my fat ass eating at buffets and drinking Dr. Pepper...
