UNC vs KY......my breakdown of the Tarheels
Well, first off, I think this has the potential to be another great game in this tournament. Both teams are playing some of the best ball of the season. Obviously I know a good bit about UNC. Here's some of what I am thinking.
First, the players......
Tyler Zeller - Playing as well as he has all year. If he catches the ball in the blocks, his baby hook is money. In general, he has good hands, so he just needs to be fed the ball, so he can score. He also shoot free throws well for a big guy...a big plus in a game that will be close.
John Henson - Dude is just long. He alters shots down low just by being in the game. His big detrement is his love of the jumper. He seems to take 2-4 jumpers a game, which he's lucky to make 1. John needs to concentrate on getting boards on both ends and less about being a viable offensive option. His free throw shooting has improved lately.....but is still not reliable.
Harrison Barnes - Needs to work for open looks. If he gets off early, he seems to not cool off. Problem is, sometimes he just vanishes from the offense. If he gets an open look at 3, book it. His stroke is just sweet.
Dexter Strickland - Needs to be a slasher. His best games come when he goes to the goal. once or twice a game, there's a "No Dex!" moment. This generally occurs when he catches the ball coming off a screen and fires an off-balanced jump shot from the top of the key (or a shot of similar distance), that seldom goes in. He's been snakebit of late with charge calls....so hopefully that doesnt affect his mindset today.
Kendall Marshall - Which kendall shows up today? There have been games where he looks like a future All-American point guard. He needs to have confidence in his passing. He's made some amazing passes this year. He still has freshman moments though. If he comes out with confidence today, it'll be good for the Heels. Also, his ability to score has improved. He definitely looks to score second, but when he is left open on the perimeter, he can drain it. He's also improved on his penetration shooting enough to where his defender must respect his abiility to put the ball up on the rim.
Leslie McDonald - Comes in and gives positive minutes. He's not what I would call a sharp-shooter, but you must respect the J. Can't leave him open or he'll make you pay. Good role player.
Justin Knox - The good.....his experience. Being older, I think he's got a good demeanor to have on this team. Unfortunately, his play of late has been lackluster. He comes in to give Zeller a break from time to time....hopefully those moments will be few and far between. Knox gives good effort....but the ball isn't going in the goal lately.
Justin Watts - I'd be ok if he just stayed on the bench. Very similar to Knox in that he's not played well lately. He'll come in and get a few minutes but don't look for much out of him.
......................................
Now, we all know Roy Williams is a pretty good coach. He seems to know what buttons to push at the right times. However, Roy never calls timeouts. There have been so many games where the game is coming down to crunchtime, and you look and the Tarheels have all 4 of their timeouts remaining. He almost always lets his players play through adversity. Now, I think a little bit of that is ok....but there are also times where a timeout would be good to just curb the other team's momentum. If Kentucky goes on a 8-0 run in the first half....down be surprised to see Roy sitting on his hands on the bench....waiting for the next media timeout. That just drive me nuts sometimes.
