I made this play today

Navy +16.5
Clemson -2
Arkansas -3.5

I do not like a lot on this card this week so I may not have much more than I have already played. Still looks like a lot of rain on Saturday in Annapolis so just do not see a lot to like about that game.

For tonight added:

TCU -13.5 -110 FH

They should demolish this SMU team that really got dominated by N. Texas last week. I like the FH better than the game since TCU could get up big and then simply slow down as they have a big game next week. All of SMU's points last week (23) were in the fourth quarter. The first quarter may also be worth a bet as I expect TCU to jump on them early.

Not going to sugar coat it, I sucked last week.

Maryland game looked great at the half and then they just blew them out 35-0 in the second half. Maryland's offense had 565 total yards and did not even look that great. Their defense was very strong once again. Continue to be impressed with what I see from them and this early schedule is only helping them. They get Temple this week at home who have not been good to start the season. They lose to Villanova and Buffalo and have been terrible on offense. This will play right into Maryland's hands as their offense is good enough to score on anyone and they should keep Temple's offense well in check. My site opened this game up at -14.5 last night. I jumped on it right way and played

Maryland -13.5 -130

I only expect this line to go up as the week moves on. I expect Maryland to be even better on offense this week. May not jump on them right away but they will wear Temple out and should cover the two TDs.

Navy plays Lehigh this week so will not be playing it as I likely will not see a line until Saturday so not putting any time into it. I was told someone saw them opening as a Pick, I would be all over that but I doubt that is correct. Was very impressed with their comeback last week. As I said, they are very tough in Annapolis. The weather also helped them out some, but a great win none the less.

Feel good with the MD bet as I am seeing -17 some places.

I have been watching the UVA line and I am jumping in:

Virginia -4 -120 - I will not even get into the fact how ridiculous it is that this game is being played in Nashville. The weather there may be worse than in Charlottesville. Too many overreactions and early decisions being made before they have any real information. UVA should have beat Indiana last week. They made some key mistakes that simply cost them the game. Ohio struggled with Howard who is not very good. This is simply a game that Virginia has to win and I expect them to and we get a much better number since this game has been moved.

Still looking at the UCLA game as I do not think they are very good. The coach can not win unless he has players. I think Fresno is better than Cincinnati.

Absolutely terrible, terrible half of offensive football by Maryland. Seriously, they could not have sucked anymore than they did. They were not ready to start this game. Hill was awful, line was terrible and play calling was atrocious. Canada trying to do too much and got completely out coached. Keep it simple and run the damn ball!! More mistakes and penalties and have no idea why the fumble on the goal line was not reviewed. They were worse than the first half last week, so I have to think they show some guts and come out and play this second half. We will see if Canada is any kind of a coach ( I continue to have my doubts about him as a head coach, one thing to get motivated for Texas another to get them up for Temple). If not, they are in for a long rest of the year as this is not a good Temple team. I do not love this play but feel compelled to play it since I think I have no chance of covering my initial bet.

Maryland -7 Ev 2ndH

My site posted a Navy -33 line. I have not done any real research on Lehigh, but this is a lot of points for Navy to cover. If Lehigh can get a couple TDs they should be able to cover the number. I am not playing it for now and likely will only play it if MD can get the second half cover.

Well, that was a complete waste of money. Hill looked like he never played a game before. Had a chance to at least push the second half and he throws a horrible pick 6 to end it. Not much else to say, MD was simply god awful today. To me, this reflects on the coaching staff and I have zero faith in them getting this team prepared from week to week. There is a reason Canada has switched teams every year. Will be interesting to see if they can recover from this.

At least they have somewhat of an excuse, Florida State has none. Taggert was a bad hire and just keeps proving it. Game isn't over but they have yet to score a TD on a Division 1 defense. It is going to be a very long year at Florida State. Guess Jimbo knew it was time to bail.

Put this in this morning

Navy -6.5 -120 - Maybe this line continues to drop from the opening number, but I will take it under a TD. I think a lot of people will like SMU in this one as they have had 3 very tough opening opponents and now get Navy at home, but the numbers support Navy. They are 9-1 SU against SMU and 5-0 SU on the road. Navy is 8-2 last 10 ATS and have covered the last 5. Over the last 10 they have won by an average of 18 points. I actually do not rely much on past stats but these are hard to ignore. Navy has not really looked very strong this year, but neither has SMU. Navy struggles against the pass but SMU, while they like to throw, is not in the top tier of passing teams in the conference. Navy's offense is getting better and I do not see SMU getting a lot of stops.

I also put TCU -2.5 -115 in this morning. I simply am not a big Texas fan and think TCU is the better team.

After the way Maryland looked on Saturday there is no way I can take them as a favorite this week. I definitely thought this was a game they would win a couple weeks ago, but now I am not so sure. I need to dig a little deeper into Minnesota since I do not know much about them, but my initial lean is to take them and the points.

Also the Board report is due to be made public on Friday. I think it is very hard to bet this game before we see what is in that report. My guess is that Durkin and others will take the fall, but I see no reason to gamble on that decision before you gamble on the game!

The MD report basically told us nothing. Lot of press for something that most people already knew. It also did nothing to address the coaching situation. I still think Durkin takes the fall here which is a shame since this is a team that needs a head coach. Rumblings are that they are focused and simply looked past Temple. I still have serious doubts about the coaching staff's ability to turn things around quickly, but Minnesota is one of the better Big Ten match ups for them at home this week. They have a young QB (I am already tired of the hearing that he is a walk-on, man they love to hype that, the kid comes from one of the top high school programs is the country and is only a walk-on because he declined a scholarship so they could use it elsewhere, he is not a true walk on!!) and have trouble moving the ball. Their strength is defense as is Marylands' right now. The health of Maryland's offensive line is the real question for me. They were atrocious last week and have to be better if they are going to win, because they can not win unless they can run the ball. I am not betting this game to start. I will watch the FH and see if there is a second half play. I simply have to see a better MD team before I put money on them.

I did play:

Purdue +7.5 -120/+225- How is BC laying this number on the road. They beat UMASS, Holy Cross and Wake by 7 on the road. Now they are laying 7 at Purdue. Sorry, but I am not buying this line. Purdue may be 0-3 but they lost all 3 by a combined 8 points and this includes Missouri and Northwestern who are likely better than BC. Couple plays here and there and they are 3-0 and this line is flipped. I will gladly take the 7.5 here and use them on the ML in a couple parlays.

3-T Teaser
North Texas -2.5
Fla St Pk
Stanford +7.5

Refs in the Navy game are absolutely horrible. Everyone gets bad calls, but they just made one of the worst chop block calls that called back a TD that I have ever seen. They totally blew it and it is a game changing call for Navy. They are so focused on these calls for Navy that they missed the uniform color of the other player. Sorry, but a call like this changes the whole game the way Navy plays.

Maryland or nothing in the second half. Minnesota's offense is complete crap. All of their success has been due to multiple pass interference or facemask penalties. Do not see them moving the ball themselves at all in this game.

Of course the end of the Navy game is a complete mess. Just a horribly officiated game. But, Navy is not a very good football team and will not beat many good teams. SMU is not a good team. At least Purdue and the ML hit and MD second half if you played it. Played Purdue big but wish I played it bigger. That line was a joke.

Need TCU big now as I have them straight and tied to the Purdue ML.

Effing Holtz going for 2. I had Navy TT over 31.5. If he kicks the XP, like most coaches would have done, it goes to a second OT and it was decent odds that Navy scores at least a field goal at puts it over the team total.

Agree, it worked but it was not a smart call at home. Sonny Dykes is not a good coach. They got lucky also as they had it covered.

Hi Bason,

Enjoy reading your posts re MD/Navy! As you can tell by my moniker I'm an ex pat Marylander living here in Ski Country Colorado for the past 11 years. My wife and I are renting a house in West Fenwick, DE for the month of October as we are nostalgic for the beach life she grew up with. Just wondering:

A) Any good spots in Rehobeth/Bethany area to have a few beers, snacks and football watching?

B) I intend to try out the new sports book at Harrington which looks to be a little less than an hour away. Wondering if you've been yet and what your experience was like?

Thanks!
