I can't afford to lose anything in my email program, what's the best way to back it up?

Do I make a new folder and export the messages there and how would I get them back if I needed them?

No clue on this.

I'm assuming this is for Windows XP since your using an outdated email platform :0003:0003:0003

File
Export
messages
windows mail
tell it where to backup
select the folders you want to back up
save

By doing this you could reload all of your email back in to windows mail

Make sure you don't keep these emails on the same computer since your biggest threat to email loss is total computer annihilation by fire or porn. Put them on a flash drive, cloud drive or external hard drive

Here is a step by step for this - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4905/backup-windows-mail-messages-and-contacts-in-vista/

Going forward
You could create a yahoo or gmail account like Scraptastic said and then create a rule in Windows mail that has every incoming email forwarded to the other account - You can also create a rule that allows you to bcc yourself on sent mail and you can change the default email address to the gmail or yahoo account

I bet BackupMJemails@gmail.com is available but will be gone in 24 hours

Thanks to both you guys. I started on Shawn's and then I saw yours, Josh, then switched but now I cancelled out. I have 92,514 items and 4.01 GB of shit to backup so will do that when I go to bed tonight.

Which way is better? It appears that both methods save the folders just like they are in my Windows Mail. To bring them back just use Import?

Either one works though, I'm sure.

I'll get this started tonight and if I have any questions I'll post here.

Thanks to you both.

Scrapper, I have no clue your method because I don't use any online email program.

If I open a folder from my external drive the emails are there but not listed by name, they are listed by a number. When they are imported back will they be listed by name again?

Curious as to why your not using something more powerful like outlook or Thunderbird or maybe even Office 365? I know when I ran my web sites/business, I would have been lost without having outlook for all the options, send as different accounts, rules/filters

Our secretary uses Outlook

My wife uses Outlook through Office 365

& I use Thunderbird

I did use Windows Mail for a brief period back when I was on Vista. It is not a terrible email platform but I do remember some frustrations with it. I used to love that outlook express would update my contacts list when I did a reply and I believe that stopped with Windows Mail. Fast forward to the piece of shit email app that they include with Windows 8 and the old Windows Mail that Jack is on now crushes it.

I've enjoyed Thunderbird but Outlook is the way for Jack to go with as much as he relies on email.

You can always back it up on the cloud as well. Not sure how long OneDrive (Microsoft) has been offering 100GB of storage space for free but it has been for a while now.

Yep, those are handy and I use them too for movies, music, etc. they're the best for that. For documents, I prefer the cloud now because I tend to use it a lot at work.

Good luck,

I agree, I put a copy of my documents in the cloud except tax stuff. I do have a local copy of movies etc, that if I lose that is fine. Also remember as this happened to a guy here at work. External drives are great until 3 a.m. in the morning and you have to worry about getting everyone out of the house for a fire. He relied on usb drives to backup stuff. Now it is all gone.

One thing people think when they hear cloud is that they don't have anything on their computer anymore. It actually keeps a local copy if you use the client, and then it syncs. For Microsoft and Google, I have two factor authentication turned on, so it would be pretty tough for someone to get to it. Possible yes, but also just as possible as someone coming into your house and taking the external drive.
