Does anyone know why a horse trainer/owner might not want a horse to win a maiden race?

Depends on where the horse is finishing in its races?

If its finishing in the back of the pack maybe they are trying to gamble with the horse and get some nice odds on the horse and then unload on it when they really want it to win.

If its running 2nd a lot they dont mind picking up some nice checks for running 2nd. They probably know they can win with the horse but dont mind the money that comes with 2nd place and are trying to milk as many 2nd cash before it breaks its Maiden.

What is the horses name and who is the trainer?

Madien races have only horse that are un proven. If a trainer/owner has an average or below average horse, it's the best arena for them to cash a check I suppose... I would have to think that every owner/trainer would want to head to the winners circle.

It's for this reason you don't see any true "maiden" classes in harness racing anymore.

Most classes are written "non winners 1 race or $$ lifetime", and usually if they finish second twice in this class, it's time to move up.

There were instances where horses were "career maidens" and guys could make quite a bit more finishing second every time rather than having to move the horse up the ladder...

Thanks! I think I truly understand this practice now.
