Palhose, what the hell do you think happens to a neighborhood when all the investment leaves? ...Basically, what you just said sarcastically is true.

1949: When blacks attend a union gathering at the home of a Jewish resident at 5643 S. Peoria St., a rumor circulates that the home is being sold to a black family. For three days, mobs of up to 10,000 people attack blacks and "Jews, Communists, and ? University of Chicago meddlers," according to historian Arnold R. Hirsch in the book, "Making the Second Ghetto."

1949 - 56 Years ago - I was just a baby!

Here is Compton from 2002 - I would say it is worse now.

Compton CA Crime Statistics (2002 - New Crime Data) Crime Type 2002 Total Per 100,000 People National per 100,000 People
Overall Compton Crime Index 4530 4673.57 4118.8
Compton Murders 52 53.65 5.6
Compton Forcible Rapes 37 38.17 33.0
Compton Robberies 482 497.28 145.9
Compton Aggravated Assaults 1239 1278.27 310.1
Compton Burglaries 738 761.39 746.2
Compton Larceny/Thefts 1188 1225.65 2445.8
Compton Motor Vehicle Thefts 794 819.16 432.1
Compton Arsons 136 140.31 N/A

That didn't come out looking very good, but 53.65 per 100,000 people. National average is 5.6 back in 2002.

More than 40% of their population is UNDER 14 or OVER 60.

Certainly not acceptable, but still pales in comparison to Iraq's 426. So it's about 8 times more dangerous for an American soldier in Iraq to be murdered than a citizen of Compton. ...Ehh, still not too good. Compton is higher than DC! (Here that, DTB?)

Were you a hippie, Ferdville?

Death is not a final diagnosis ? Murder rates in US cities comparable to Iraq!
Jewish World Review ^ | Sept. 24, 2004 | Drs. Michael A. Glueck & Robert J. Cihak

Posted on 09/24/2004 7:17:50 AM PDT by Homo_homini_lupus

Death may not be a final medical diagnosis but the state of being dead is final! Are the deaths of our courageous soldiers any more final than those who die on our own streets?

On September 8, 2004, the Los Angeles Times reported (The Conflict In Iraq, U.S. Toll in Iraq Reaches 1,000) that through September 7, 2004, 1,000 US soldiers lost their lives in Iraq due to both hostile and non-hostile actions. This is certainly a tragic loss correctly reported in the media and mourned by the US populace. However focusing exclusively on these statistics does not provide the much needed perspective.

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report of May 24, 2004, the number of murders reported during calendar years 2002 and 2003 show a comparable death toll exists in several US cities. Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City reported 1,168, 1,246 and 1,184 murders during the subject 24-month period.

[...snip...]

The average monthly death toll for US soldiers in Iraq is 55.6 deaths per month while the average reported murders per month in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City are 48.7, 51.9 and 49.3 deaths per month. The murder statistics in the US cities are for hostile deaths only ? whereas the death toll in Iraq includes both hostile and accidental deaths. This makes our own murder rates in LA, Chicago and NYC even more appalling. Yet there is not an equivalent amount of reporting or hand wringing.

[...snip...]

Reasonable people can disagree about the wisdom of going to war in Iraq. But objectivity requires that these deaths be put in perspective. Do we continue to condemn death in Iraq while simultaneously ignoring the concurrent deaths in our own cities ? or should we consider all violent deaths a terrible waste of life?

i graduated from HS in 1965 and college in 1969. Saw my share of hippies, but wasn't nearly as widespread as the media portrayed. I don't think drugs were as prevalent then as most believe, but maybe I led a sheltered life. But since I was gambling since I was 12, I think I came in to contact with plenty of unsavory elements.

What, he would kill me for saying that? That's a bit excessive, you think?

Yes I think he may try even though he has never been violent . He loved Roseland like many did they had everything ....Huge parks with pools, fabulous baseball stadiums and basketball courts and they could walk to the beach if you told him they abandoned the place he grew up in and loved he just might kill ya ....fact is they got pushed out of that area by thugs and had nothing to do with abandonment.

Those numbers are again making the tragic error of ignoring the massive difference in gross populations. Comparing 8+ million people in New York City to 150,000 in Iraq is absurd.

Your tragic error is not realizing that their are places like I have explained on 1st street in Chicago that I would rather be point on Iraq mission's for a year than walk into certian death only 30 miles from my house .

Don't know much about source -

Machias Privateer
A site dedicated to the patriots of Machias, Maine who captured the British warship, Margaretta, on June 12, 1775 armed only with muskets, axes and pitchforks. This was the first ship-to-ship combat of what was to become the U. S. Navy. This action has been described as the "Lexington of the Seas". Chicago vs. Iraq Murder Rates - Recapitulation
Here in Chicago, they are celebrating a reduction of the murder rate to 450 murders in 2004 for a population of 2.8 million! Since Iraq has about 25 million people, at the same per capita rate, they would have 11 murders per day. It seems nearly every murder in Iraq makes the news!

Picture the Iraqi ?insurgency? as a gang turf war, the insurgents vs. the Iraqi police with the Americans taking the role of the cops. It is quite dangerous to be in either gang! But the ordinary citizen tends to stay out of the line of fire. A massive police presence will cause the gangbangers to hide. So with a strong presence on 1/30/05, the election should come off well, just as in Afghanistan! But that puts the citizens in the government camp! Looks like the insurgents are going to lose the turf war!

But is this the way the media covers the situation? No! A Fox News Report reads...

?In Baghdad, meanwhile, three mortar shells exploded Saturday near the heavily guarded Green Zone (search), causing no casualties but sending American and Iraqi officials scurrying for cover. It marked the third straight day of rebel attacks on the zone, the nerve center of the U.S. and Iraqi administration, after a lull of a couple of weeks.?

It should read something like this ?In Baghdad, with population 5 million people, three spitballs were thrown near the heavily guarded Green Zone, causing no casualties but annoying American and Iraqi officials. It marked the third straight day of ?insurgent? attacks on the zone, the nerve center of the U.S. and Iraqi administration, after a lull of a couple of weeks.?

Here is some unrefuted reporting from the New York Times which shows that Iraq had 202 murders in 14 days or 14.4 per day! Iraqi population estimates vary, but for comparison purposes Chicago (at 450 confirmed murders in 366 days with a population of 2.8 million) had .439 murders per million per day. The two would be equal if Iraq's population was 32,858,867 people! Population estimates vary but about 25 million people live in Iraq. Therefore, the streets of Iraq are about as safe as the streets of Chicago though in both places there are some tough neighborhoods and you might not wish to be a member of particular organizations! The Iraqi trend is going down faster than Chicago's. Here are the links to Chicago murder statistics. Note that there can be minor adjustments over time so that the exact number will vary as cases are cleared.

Tell him said this-

If white folk weren't so hellbent on keeping the city segregated (Chicago being probably THE MOST segregated major city in the US) then his neighborhhod would not have become so void of the investment needed to sustain it's beauty and safety.

Whites took the exit to the suburbs and it sealed the fate of the great old neighborhoods. They were afraid of blacks and everything became a self-fulfilling prophecy as they fled.

Tell him I said all that. I'm happy to discuss it further at any time.

Another from unfamiliar source, but interesting none the less. Note how the deaths resemble the overall population figures of White, Black and Hispanic soldiers. I think we usually hear opinions cloaked as the truth that claim minorities also die at a higher rate than Whites. According to this, it is just the opposite.

Who Dies in Iraq, Where and From What
by James Dunnigan
June 26, 2005

From May 1, 2003, through June 5th, 2005, 1,674 American troops were killed in Iraq. However, 23 percent of those deaths were from non-combat causes (about 40 percent of being automotive accidents). Hostile gunfire accounted for 25 percent of the deaths, with PRGs caused another four percent. Roadside bombs also caused 25 percent of deaths, with car bombs contributing another four percent.

Over half the deaths occurred in a few locations. Twenty percent of the deaths took place in Baghdad, while 11 percent occurred in Anbar province (west of Baghdad.) Six percent of the deaths were in Mosul, eight percent in Fallujah and six percent in Ramadi.

Two percent of those killed have been women, while 31 percent were age 22 or younger. Only 11 percent of the dead were 35 or older. Active duty troops account for 78 percent of the deaths (but only comprise about 60 percent of the troops in Iraq). The army accounts for 69 percent of the dead, the marines 28 percent. Lower ranking troops (grades E1-E4) were 59 percent of the dead. Whites were 74 percent of the dead, blacks ten percent, Hispanic 11 percent. It?s a suburbanites war, with 40.5 percent of the dead coming from the suburbs, and a third from rural areas.

Some 1,300 Iraqi police and soldiers have been killed in the same period, with that number increasing as more well trained and led police and troops become available. From April 2003 to the end of 2004, about 65 Iraqi police and soldiers died each month, on average. But in the last three months, that average has been over 200 a month.

In the last two years, terrorists have also killed 721 men who were applying to join the security forces. In addition, over a hundred Iraq interpreters have been killed as well. Also, 232 foreign civilian contractors have died in the last two years.

Crime is also high, and is worst in Baghdad, where the murder rate is about twice that of Washington, DC (where it is currently 43 per 100,000 population per year.)

I feel bad for your grandparents, Palehose. They were abandoned by their community who took everything with them when they left. The fault, by the numbers, lies in the masses who moved, killing the property value of the area.

So who does he blame? Blacks? Are blacks bad people? Is it poor people who are bad? Liberals?

Thats such a ridiculous statement its not worthy of comment but I will make one last attempt on this . I don't know what part of everybody loved the neighborhood poured their money and their hearts into it and got pushed out by the increasing crime rate you just don't get ? But it obviously isn't going to get through your thick head. So you keep believing whatever the heck you want . Took everything with them ? Doh ! did ya want them to leave the furniture or something ? What do you do when you move ? please make some sense will ya ? If your talking jobs thats just another uneducated stupid thing to say . A majority of the south-side blue collar worked in the mills so when they moved away they kept the same jobs they took nothing other than their personal property with them .

Liberals are ruining the country , are they bad ....not intentionally for the most part. Are Blacks bad ? Some are just like whites or any race for that matter their are good apples and bad ones .
