pudge is too old, especially for a catcher. i say we keep benson adn keep ramon castro behind the plate and spend money or a trade for a 2nd basemen, or middle relief.

Castro cant cut it as a everyday catcher...Pudge is 34...Like i said,i have not heard anything about this trade..i doubt if it happens,Benson is a keeper. The mets will go the free agent root for a catcher,i still believe they get Molina. We will see.
So far.so good.

JUST HEARD BENSON FOR JULIO FROM BALTIMORE!

WHY ARE THEY TRYING TO TRADE BENSON? THE FACT THAT THE NEW YORK POST IS DENYING THIS RUMOR ACTUALLY MEANS IT MIGHT BE TRUE. LOL

The reliever Julio it must be.The Mets must have something up their sleeves if they are willing to get rid of Benson.I like Benson, but in my opinion i would take Barry Zito if thats what they are thinking.Julio would be a nice set up guy for Wagner.

Looks like the Mets are just manipulating the media on this one: (from another site)

Wondering what's up with that seemingly inequitable Kris Benson for Jorge Julio deal that fizzled last night? My Mets source has the scoop.

"Mets are hanging onto Benson for now. Rumor of the deal being close to completion was leaked to NY Post so that other teams who may have interest in Benson could come back to them with a better offer next week."

This is the same source that gave me the Billy Wagner deal, so I'm confident in his take on Benson.

Seems the Mets played the Post to test the waters. Many analysts wrote the inequity of the deal off as a salary dump, but cutting $5MM isn't really going to change the way the Mets do business. The club floated the idea of dealing a decent #3 starter for a lousy, overpaid reliever, and it's likely that a starting pitching-starved team tops Jorge Julio. The Angels are one team that can be considered to have a surplus of solid bullpen arms and a possible need for a starter like Benson.

From ESPN:

Did the Mets jump too soon and give up too much on Carlos Delgado? It's a question being asked these days.

Carlos Delgado
First Base
New York Mets

Profile
2005 SEASON STATISTICS
GM HR RBI R OBP AVG
144 33 115 81 .399 .301

"That one surprised me," one AL executive said. "I never thought they would give up as much as they gave up if they were going to have to eat as much of Delgado's money as they ate. And to be honest, I don't think there was anybody else in on him beside the Mets."

The Mets, on the other hand, were under the impression there were a number of teams battling for Delgado. But when Rumblings investigators checked around, we determined that the Orioles expressed early interest and then never made another serious overture. And Seattle was only interested if it could find a way to move money (possibly by dealing Richie Sexson). And the Angels weren't ready to do anything until they knew whether they could sign Paul Konerko.

So in truth, it appears there really wasn't another team making any kind of serious run at Delgado at the time. But Omar Minaya isn't a guy who likes to sit around and wait to make anything happen, in case you hadn't noticed.

Delgado tax-bill rumblings
While it was announced that the Mets would pick up all but $7 million of the $48 million left on Delgado's contract, those of you who enjoy subtraction will be shocked to learn they'll still be on the hook for more than $41 million.

That's because Delgado's deal with Florida included a clause that adjusted his salary upward if he got traded to a team where he would have to pay a state income tax. He paid none in Florida.

Since the New York state tax rate is 7.7 percent, the Mets could wind up owing as much as another $1.8 million. (Hold those calculators. Remember that he owes that N.Y. tax only on home games.)

money isn't my point....i'm just saying that the Mets parted with their best pitching prospect for a guy that wasn't drawing that much interest at the time. The Mets are hands-down a better team after the trade, but they did pay too high of a price for the situation imo.

Report: Mets cross catcher off wish list, get Lo DucaESPN.com news services

The wheeling-and-dealing New York Mets crossed another need off their 2006 wish list, acquiring All-Star catcher Paul Lo Duca from the Florida Marlins in exchange for two minor league pitchers, the New York Daily News reported on its Web site.

It would be the second deal between the Mets and Marlins this offseason, with Florida sending slugging first baseman Carlos Delgado to New York last month. The Mets also signed free-agent closer Billy Wagner, giving Mets general manager Omar Minaya a player at every postition he said was a priority.

Lo Duca, 33, was an All-Star in each of the past three seasons. He will be taking the place of Mike Piazza, a sure Hall of Fame player and, like Lo Duca, a former Dodger. Lo Duca hit .283 with six homers and 57 RBI for the Marlins in 2005.

The Mets will send 19-year-old right-hander Gabriel Hernandez and another minor leaguer pitcher to be named, the Daily News reported.

The departure of Lo Duca would represent the further dismantling of a competitive Marlins franchise, which sent Luis Castillo, a three-time All-Star and the Marlins' career leader in six major categories, to the Twins last week. The Marlins are citing rising costs after repeated bids for a new ballpark failed.

Delgado, ace Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell are also gone, and center fielder Juan Pierre is on the block.

Minnesota gave up right-handers Travis Bowyer and Scott Tyler in the Castillo deal. The Marlins plan to use the hard-throwing Bowyer in the bullpen next season, while Tyler will begin the year in their minor-league system, general manager Larry Beinfest said.

With no new stadium on the horizon in South Florida, team president David Samson announced last week that the Marlins would dramatically reduce their payroll, which was $60 million at the start of the 2005 season. He also said the team will consider moving after the 2007 season, with Las Vegas and Portland, Ore., among the candidates.

With three trades, Florida has cut about $32 million from next year's payroll, excluding any Lo Duca deal. On Thanksgiving Day, Florida received seven prospects by trading Delgado to the Mets and sending Lowell and Beckett to Boston.

The Marlins' so-called fire sale is their second in eight years. Former owner Wayne Huizenga ordered a payroll purge after the team won the 1997 World Series, and prospects acquired in subsequent deals helped Florida win the title again in 2003 under current owner Jeffrey Loria.
